It has to be some of the best Indian food I've had outside of India. The little complimentary chai while you wait in line is such a thoughtful touch and really sets the tone. Even though there was a queue, it moved surprisingly quickly. Once inside, the service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. As for the food... every dish we ordered was outstanding. Rich flavors, perfectly balanced spices, and you can tell a lot of care goes into every plate. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. If you're in London, don't overthink it. Just get in line, enjoy the chai, order what sounds good, and have a fantastic meal. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in town.

In my opinion, there are 2 main things to know about Dishoom: it's an Indian restaurant that is a chain, with 11 locations worldwide. The food is really good for a chain, bit it doesn't begin to come close to a restaurant that takes care of of its individual customers. Walking in, there's lots of energy. People are having a good time, there's no question. We were seated upstairs where there must have been around 40 tables. All of the staff are walking around in a hurry, cause everything here is in a hurry. The intention is to get you our in less than an hour. They want you in, through, and out. I saw this with multiple tables. Our server Yanko came to our table quite promptly and helped us make selections, both for food and drinks. For the first time in my experience eating in a restaurant, the appetizers arrived minutes before our cocktails. They came so fast that we didn't even think it was our order. And then moments after the drinks arrived, all of the main dishes and sides were placed on the table. With no way to keep anything warm. All of this with 10 minutes of placing the order. I appreciate prompt service, but this takes it to an absurd extreme. Our appetizers included the house Chaat and prawn koliwada. I enjoyed the prawns more but the flavors were facile, not close to what I expect and have enjoyed in excellent Indian restaurants. The main dishes were the Goan monkfish curry and Sali Goan. These were also just OK, absolutely nothing special. The cheese naan was soggy, though the flavor was good. This was an unacceptable texture for a naan. Dessert was Basmati Kheer, flavorful Basmati rice with fruit compote on top. In between and unneeded, was a thin layer of creme brulee. I did enjoy my tea: ginger, lemon and honey and my wife liked her mint tea. I do not know the restaurant scene in Edinburgh, we've been here for 4 days. But this is just not a place I'deven consider returning to. It's really a factory that feeds folks, not a restaurant that cares for its customers. The business model had been optimized to maximize income with lots of throughput. What's been almost completely lost in my opinion, is the heart and soul of the dining experience.

The boyff wanted a lamb chop for starter - random I know - and we ordered the mains too. The lamb chop was cooked beautifully and was a decent chop of good quality lamb. Mains came out.... I had chicken tikka balti, which was lovely, I was surprised just how much chicken there was in the dish! It was cooked to an excellent standard and had lots of flavours running through it. The boyff had lamb jalfrazzi and he said it was excellent! He didn't talk the whole way though and was just nodding and mmmmn'ing! We had some Bombay potatoes as a side and they were delicious! I nearly ordered some just to take home with me. When we had finished, we asked for the bill, we were served fresh orange slices to cleanse our mouths with (obviously I ate them like you used to as a child and found it highly amusing), and some warm wipes. We paid and were bought the typical after dinner mint chocolate squares. The waiter chatted to us for a little bit and was so friendly, without being over bearing. Slow to brink us the drinks menu, the table for 5 was too small to accomodate everything that we ordered. To be fair enough, when we did order the food was excellent. Lots of choice, spicy and flavour some and the Kingfisher on tap went down nicely. I don't think I'd visit again - more likely to use as a take out.

The ones in America have a thick crunchy exterior and lots of veggie filling served with a nice Tamarind sauce. They did not offer Tamarind sauce ( brown sauce ). Odd enough the tamarind sauce that I have tried here from the grocers ( Morrison's ) was a bit vinegary. Perhaps that's how it is made here. I also had tried the Chicken Tikka Masala. That was also different here in the England. It seems it is made with a sweet sauce. I've tried several Indian restaurants and the Tikka Masala sauce all seem to be based on a sweet sauce. In America it's not sweet. It has a tomato, green pepper, basil and cream flavor. The Garlic Naan was alight. I would had preferred it to be more warm and crispier. The service was good. So was the ambiance. Because the food here is differently prepared from what I am used to, I think a fair rating would be 3 out of 5 based on service, ambiance and portions. I let Jane and Oli do most of the ordering, since they are regulars and not everything translates into American English and English English the same way. We started with papadum and relish tray, and a couple of Kingfishers (on draft). For the table we ordered pillau rice, naan (2 kinds, but can't remember which 2), and saag paneer. I chose the Hozor Ki Pasandwalla Murghi because I wanted to try to pronounce it, and it's one of Oli's favorites. It's thinner sauce with nice heat and a good amount of peppers, onions, and tomatoes. He chose the Chicken Laknavi, and Jane chose the Chicken Pasanda. Everything was nicely spiced - heat but still flavor. Portions were generous - we probably only needed half as much, but we couldn't resist all the flavors. We were treated to a drink afterwards with our bill, and Bailey's was a perfect digestif with the chocolate. On our way out, we were given a 2019 calendar as a holiday present. I'm looking forward to another delicious and friendly meal when I'm back in Oxford!
