Their two major partners are Black Ink Coffee out of Bangor and the Italian Bakery out of Lewiston. This might not seem like a big deal, but there are so many places opening up in Greater Portland now that don't use a local coffee roaster and I don't get it. So, thanks LRC! The space has seating in front (it feels like these are the most coveted ones, as they're comfortable chairs with armrests located in front of their floor to ceiling windows overlooking the street) and some more basic two and four top tables in the back. The staff? So friendly! They were super patient when I had loads of questions, they made recommendations (like secret menu kind of stuff!), and they double-check our specific order, I think the coffee itself is good (hot, iced, or cold brew specifically); the specialty latte menu is really fun! It changes seasonally, and they're creative enough options that you'll want to come back to find out what the new line-up is. For me, though, they are too, too, too sweet. The sweetest latte I've ever had, honestly. It tasted like I was drinking melted ice cream. So, if you like a sugar forward, milk forward drink, get it as is. If you like a more coffee forward drink, PRO TIP, ask for half the amount of syrup and double up your espresso shots as well.

I was pleased to find out that I could also grab a latte, to go, from Ritual. The space is beautiful and the staff was wonderful! I was a bit skeptical of the breakfast sandwich, as it looked like it would be mostly bread (not sustenance), but I was wrong. Inside that pillowy (I assume potato-based roll) was a delicious egg, bacon and special sauce combination! I will be stopping here again, in the future!

Lots of fancier options too but I don't go for those. They have a selection of baked goods. I think they're all from other small local businesses, not made here. I had a lemon blueberry scone with the coffee which was outstanding. Delightfully light in texture, not heavy or greasy, and not overly sweet. Lemony of course and the blueberries were plentiful, tangy, and small. I'd guess they were wild Maine blueberries (frozen of course this being April) but I'm not sure. A maple glaze completed this masterpiece. They didn't forget the chocolate lovers. A very dark enormous brownie called to me but reluctantly I passed. Maybe tomorrow. It annoys me when bakeries don't have any chocolate offerings. From the hand pie selection I chose a Carrot, Leek, and Goat Cheese for later. Also outstanding. The crust was flaky, not dry, subtly buttery, and just the right thickness for the filling which was generous. (It made it all the way to the edges, which many hand pies do not.) Decorated with thyme leaves. The filling was sweet, which I thought was just from the caramelized leeks but I read on the wrapper that sugar is also an ingredient. Just the right amount. The carrots were "rainbow", in several colors, and very pretty. Pretty expensive at $8 but for the size and quality I'm glad I got it. The place is very small but looks like a comfortable place to hang out. A few small tables, walls decorated with painted flowers and vines. The counter people were nice and thanked me for coming in. Customers were mostly engrossed in conversations, not absorbed into their devices. Even though it was just a quick stop for take-out I enjoyed my visit.

But I've always appreciated their delicious roasts! I had the opportunity to check out their open house in December and am so glad I braved the cold and snow to do so. I'm not entirely sure if they're open to the public normally, but part of me hopes they are (or would consider it at least two or four times a year). This is a beautiful space that should be celebrated and used as frequently as possible. We got to sample many different blends and actually watch coffee roast (which I had no idea was such a quick process - from white to yellow to tan to brown). Also, wanna talk about passionate, community-oriented people? The folks behind the Wicked Joe (and Bard) brand(s) definitely are; and they're intensely knowledgeable about coffee, too. What you don't know is that the entire Bard staff is trained thoroughly at this Wicked Joe locale on a set-up identical to one at the actual coffee shop. Each barista has to make every drink on the menu perfectly before they can serve you at Bard. My respect for that coffee shop multiplied by a thousand when I found that out! Also, as a side note, the actual roast of the coffees are different for the two brands - definitely important to remember and point out!

The drinks: I tried an iced cardamom latte with oat milk and it was fantastic (if you've ever had the vanilla cardamom cold brew coffee from Trader Joe's, it was an elevated version of that). I've also had a couple cocktails - since they make their syrups in house when they run out, they run out and your drink might be unavailable... BUT the staff is exceptional at making alternate recommendations and even making totally off menu drinks entirely! The food: Several (clearly labeled) vegan options! We tried the muhammara (a housemade dip topped with spiced walnuts, chickpeas, and three half slices of toasted sourdough) and the hummus plate (housemade and topped with marinated chickpeas and a drizzle of olive oil, accompanied by six naan wedges). LOVE the quantity of both dips, but wish there was some other dipping vessel outside of (the sometimes stodgy) bread. A little heap of rainbow veggies would be amazing! While the muhammara was a bit more liquidy than I've had elsewhere, the hummus was thicker than I was expecting. Solid shareable options regardless! (Grab a seat, order at the counter, and they'll call your name when your drinks are ready so you can go grab them; if you've ordered food, they'll bring that to your table.
