My dad and I walked around the whole thing and according to my fitbit I had 3.5 miles but we did a lot of side walking too. We parked in the front near the lighthouse alongside of an ore dock. The iron ore docks were cool to see as they are unique to this part of the country. From there we walked out to the lighthouse and checked it out before starting off on the trail. The cliffs over looking Lake Superior and black rocks along the route were really cool to take in. Be careful though as these cliff rocks are known to go crashing in to Lake Superior. I'd say it's almost 3 miles to walk all the way around. There were tons of picnic tables and pavilions but not sure for getting the pavilions work in terms of renting them or if it's 1st come 1st serve. I also saw 2 kayak/canoe vans with trailers but didn't anyone kayaking or canoeing so not sure if that's an option near by.

One hundred of the sites have electricity. The remaining ten are tent sites. Prices in 2023 were $25 for a tent site, $40 with electricity, and $50 with full hookups. We had a very good experience as tent campers here. We were walk-ins on a Thursday night in late May, and were able to secure a site. (About half of the tent sites were already reserved). The girls in the office, both students at Northern Michigan University, were very helpful and friendly -- even giving us recommendations of places to visit and restaurants to visit. (Thanks to them, we learned about a unique Marquette food -- cudighi). The tent sites are clustered along the water, and each has a picnic table and fire ring. Parking is close by but not directly at each of the individual sites. The campground has well-maintained hot showers, restrooms with flush toilets, and paved roads. It has a beach, small playground, grills, and hiking/biking trails. The location is great -- about one mile from the Lake Superior Beaches. We also drove a short distance to do the short hike up Sugarloaf Mountain to the observation deck, and drove over to drive the Presque Isle Park Loop. Finally, the campground was relatively far from traffic and quiet, so we were able to get a good night's sleep.

The Iron Ore Heritage Trail (IOHT) does not disappoint. With equal parts of nature and history, it's a great destination for walkers, riders, joggers, kids and families. While not completely paved, the crushed aggregate is easily navigated on my city bike. I went out yesterday after a night of rain and the path was in great shape (surprise!). Folks in the area are very proud of this trail and rightfully so. It's beautiful and fun, a treasure for all ages to enjoy.

The trails (which are basically the old railways that were used to move ore to the kilns along the lake) are now used for recreation such as hiking and biking. Along Lake Superior it passes through many parks and beaches with amazing views. There are also places to eat, shop or have a drink along the trail (at least in Marquette). I have only been on the trails in Marquette, which is a small portion of the 47 miles, but according to the information available online or at most touristy spots, there are plenty on other sights, foods and history to take in along the rest of the trail. Incredible formations of land that you can't see anywhere else. I lived in Michigan for 20 years and had no idea the Upper Peninsula held the treasures we got to see! Pros: -The guides had a ton of energy and were very patient with the people in our group. We had a great group of good listeners and that helped but our guide was also very flexible and let us veer off into the waters without having to stick super close to us. -The time of day that we went really made a difference. We chose the "sunset" tour so we were able to see the pictures rocks around 4-6pm . Though this is not sunset, it was still pretty to see the sun reflecting off the different colors of the rocks and formations. -the ability to just hop on a bus and hop in a kayak without carrying them helped as well. It just made everything really easy and seamless. Cons: -the bus to the launch off site didn't have A/C which was fine, but we just sat there waiting for other buses to unload and I think that could have been done a little differently. It was too hot to have thirty people sweating in a bus. -tour time said 6 hours but we only kayaked for 3.5 which was fine but maybe make it clear on the site that the bus time would take a hour round trip -I also would have suggested just an hour for lunch, being able to get out and eat our lunch on the beach was great but I didn't need to be there for 1.5 hours, I would have rather done a shorter lunch and gotten back sooner Overall, amazing and an outstanding time we had!

I am honestly disgusted by the complete lack of organization, professionalism, communication, and…read morecustomer service I experienced with Uncle Ducky's / Paddling Michigan. I traveled from out of town for this experience. I spent money on lodging, gas, food, planning, and preparation for this trip -- far more effort and care than your company appeared willing to put into operating the tour itself. I arrived around 15 minutes early for the stated 2:30 PM meet time for the 3:00 PM launch and was immediately met with a completely locked building, no guide present, no organized check-in, no signage, no information regarding equipment, dry bags, footwear, launch procedures, or where guests were even supposed to be. Over the next 20+ minutes, I watched multiple confused guests continue arriving while company-associated employees sat nearby offering little to no proactive information despite clearly knowing the situation. Guests were left wandering around trying to figure out whether the tour was even happening. A shuttle eventually arrived AFTER the meet time had already passed, and when I directly asked for information regarding the tour, I was told they "had to figure that out." That is an absolutely insane thing to hear after guests have already arrived for a guided kayaking excursion. The employees present either had no ability to contact management or were unwilling. Nobody appeared to be in charge. No guide was present. No leadership existed. No confidence was inspired whatsoever. As a former kayaking guide myself, I have never seen a guided outdoor operation run this poorly. If your company is not going to have staff physically present at the meeting location, then guests should be meeting directly at the launch site. At the absolute minimum, the guide should already be there before guests begin arriving. Instead, what I experienced was confusion, silence, disorganization, unprepared employees, and complete operational incompetence from a company responsible for leading people out onto Lake Superior. Considering Lake Superior is one of the most dangerous and unpredictable freshwater lakes in the world, the level of disorganization and lack of professionalism this company displayed was completely unacceptable. At that point I chose not to participate because I had absolutely no confidence in the professionalism or management of the experience. Frankly, I would not trust this company with my outdoor experience if they had the last kayaks on earth. Thankfully, I spent the evening exploring Pictured Rocks and Lake Superior with my dog instead, which ended up being infinitely more enjoyable than wasting my afternoon standing in a parking lot waiting for someone to explain whether the tour was even functioning.

The verged on rude during the entire morning. most of the dry bags are very old and pretty useless. the spray skirts were the same. there was endless chaos getting everyone ready for over an hour. The guide was nice but only engaged us in about 5 minutes of information about the sandstone cliffs and it was all information you could get from a visitor center. If you want a naturalist, better to find out who is leading your trip. There was no lunch provided which seems ridiculous for the money paid. We couldn't tell if they cancelled a portion of our trip because of weather (as stated) or because their kayak transport pontoon boat had sunk at the put-in spot. Their website states 6 hours of paddling. After the morning debacle, we paddled leisurely for 2 hours to lunch and less than 2 hours back (with the wind). The 'long paddle' we were supposed to do was supposedly only 2 hours further, far short of the 8 total hours mentioned on their site. I guess their times include waiting in the parking lot, waiting for them to organize on the beach, and a very leisurely 1 hour on a beach eating the lunch you bring along. I live in Houghton and have spent 20 years on Lake Superior and know the dangers well. I left my house at 3:30 am and started to drive the 2+ hours, one hour into the drive I noticed the wind was really blowing, I called the guys and asked if Ducky would call if the waves were too big to fish or too dangerous to go, no calls, so we continue, I get there at 5:40, my friends pull in and we spend the next 40 minutes looking for the charter boat and calling Ducky with no answer. 7 am Ducky calls back and says we are still on but he is confused why we were in Marquette, we needed to drive 20 minutes more to shelter bay. Remember we confirmed Marquette. So we drive the extra 20 and the captain tells us we can go if we want, but he doesn't recommend it as the waves are 6 to 8 feet and building making it impossible to fish, I had the feeling this would happen, but Ducky had no regard for his captain or customers he was only concerned that he get his cut of the $1200 bucks we would have paid. Hey guys you can go in small craft advisories, just make sure you pay up front....A simple phone call to reschedule would have saved us all a lot of time and money and we would have been writing a different review as well. $70 bucks on gas, 6 hours round trip driving time and a waste of time could have been avoided with a simple call. There are many real good lake trout charter outfits, I recommend you look into any other service but this one.
