Up until that point, my vet visits had been covered. But for the final consultation with a vet, the charge was going to be 160 euro. Cremation and euthanasia would have been 344, with a required "cremation package" of an additional 380 euro minimum for a paw print of the cat and a "casket" or paper container of ashes. The total cost for euthanising my cat would have been about 780 euro. This approach to end of life care for my cat seemed to be the epitome of taking advantage of a vulnerable pet owner. The independent vet down the street will charge me less than half that for a cremation with ashes returned. If I don't want the ashes returned, the cost will be 130 euro (and perhaps I will make a donation to the DSPCA). Corporate vets have the means to build shiny premises and hire advertising agencies to write slogans that include terms like "family" and "village" and "care". I have no complaints about the nice young vets who work for Village Vets, although I never saw one who had more than 10 years experience, which would indicate that this corporate is hiring young vets who they can pay less. Still, for anyone seeking a vet I would NOT recommend Village Vets. Look past the bells and whistles of corporate gloss and find an independent vet, if at all possible.

The vets themselves know how to expertly treat your pets, while the care given by the veterinary nurses was such a comfort to Buddy while he was so unwell. I can't compare this Vet with any other vet in Ireland, as I've never been to other Vets in this…read morecountry. But I have a long history of "going to the Vet" in my home country of Germany. And I've been at dozens of them there, good ones, bad ones and even "alternative" ones. We Germans are known for the fact that we think that our health system (for humans that is!) is among the best in the world. And that's probably true, it is surely true when comparing it to the Irish "system" (which is the forecourt of hell). But back to animal health: the day I brought my pets to Bairbre's Veterinary Hospital for the first time, I realized that this is (*Jeremy Clarkson voice on*) probably one of the best Vets in the world (*Jeremy Clarkson voice off*). The place even has a certain "glam factor": Bairbre is known to TV viewers for her appearances in the Irish TV show "Animal A+E". She is a lecturer in Dublin's DCU Veterinary faculty. And she is specialized in "exotic animals" (mind you, in Ireland, that includes Guinea Pigs...). But besides the fancy stuff, what makes this place so special? - Professionalism All three Vets working here (Bairbre, Lindsey and Una) are among the best you can find. - Price: I do not know if other Vets in Ireland are cheaper. But you do get very good value for your money. And they are not more expensive than any Vet I've been to in Germany. - Friendliness: Be it the people at the reception or the doctors, everybody is super-friendly here. Even though most of the time you have to go to the Vet, you won't go there for fun, I have to say that I like being there. - Specialties: Especially if you have any other pet then the usual dog or cat, you can be assured that your animal is in the right hands there. People with "exotic" animals drive long distances to be there (we surely do, we drive all the way from Sutton!). It is also very cool to wait there and see people with bearded dragons, turtles, crows etc... . Once, there even was a person from a wildlife park with a sick falcon! - Cats & Dogs: even cat and dog owners should drive that extra mile and find out what makes this place so special. We recently got cats and even though any given Vet might handle them with experience, we took no risks and went to Bairbre - and feel that our animals are in the best hands possible.

But the staff here had no problem dealing with my little pet, no shaking of heads as to how someone could love a rat or nervous of being bitten! They are very used to exotic pets and handled her with an expert touch and she is slowing getting better. She didn't bite them either. The price here is a bit steep but other vets that i had phoned didn't want to see a pet rat either because they are not familar with their needs or afraid to overinject??

Please Sadly, Our…read morebeautiful Mabel & ourselves were badly let down by this practice. We had been long time clients. When Mabel developed a bad cough, retching at the end and a small solid lump on her hip, we brought her here for a full examination. She was diagnosed with kennel cough & lump called insignificant. 2 weeks later we returned because the cough had worsened and the lump had doubled. The diagnosis remained the same. Asked for bloods to be done. A week later we returned and saw a different vet, Conor. He told us the blood results were clear, we asked about doing imaging, he told us we would be throwing our money away. When we asked how confident he was with the diagnosis, he laughed and said he had been in this game over 35 years. He also told us to stop bringing Mabel in over niggling little things, he said if you keep looking for things, you'll find them and regarding the lump, he said sure we all get lumps and bumps as we get older. Still concerned, we brought Mabel to another vet. Who diagnosed an enlarged heart. Started meds . We still weren't satisfied as symptoms were not clearing up . Went to killester vets. They carried out full imaging and biopsies. Mabel was diagnosed with tumors in her lung, on hip and lower leg, it was an agressive cancer. She sadly passed away last Saturday. Had O'Scanaill vets taken our concerns seriously they would have done a full investigation including imaging which they did not . We are absolutely sickened by the treatment we received from O'Scanaill vets. While this practice maybe fine for routine check ups, we felt there was a serious lack of care and attention given to both the animals and the concerns of their owners. Ask yourself how much you love your pet before bringing them here .
