I can't compare this Vet with any other vet in Ireland, as I've never been to other Vets in this…read morecountry. But I have a long history of "going to the Vet" in my home country of Germany. And I've been at dozens of them there, good ones, bad ones and even "alternative" ones. We Germans are known for the fact that we think that our health system (for humans that is!) is among the best in the world. And that's probably true, it is surely true when comparing it to the Irish "system" (which is the forecourt of hell). But back to animal health: the day I brought my pets to Bairbre's Veterinary Hospital for the first time, I realized that this is (*Jeremy Clarkson voice on*) probably one of the best Vets in the world (*Jeremy Clarkson voice off*). The place even has a certain "glam factor": Bairbre is known to TV viewers for her appearances in the Irish TV show "Animal A+E". She is a lecturer in Dublin's DCU Veterinary faculty. And she is specialized in "exotic animals" (mind you, in Ireland, that includes Guinea Pigs...). But besides the fancy stuff, what makes this place so special? - Professionalism All three Vets working here (Bairbre, Lindsey and Una) are among the best you can find. - Price: I do not know if other Vets in Ireland are cheaper. But you do get very good value for your money. And they are not more expensive than any Vet I've been to in Germany. - Friendliness: Be it the people at the reception or the doctors, everybody is super-friendly here. Even though most of the time you have to go to the Vet, you won't go there for fun, I have to say that I like being there. - Specialties: Especially if you have any other pet then the usual dog or cat, you can be assured that your animal is in the right hands there. People with "exotic" animals drive long distances to be there (we surely do, we drive all the way from Sutton!). It is also very cool to wait there and see people with bearded dragons, turtles, crows etc... . Once, there even was a person from a wildlife park with a sick falcon! - Cats & Dogs: even cat and dog owners should drive that extra mile and find out what makes this place so special. We recently got cats and even though any given Vet might handle them with experience, we took no risks and went to Bairbre - and feel that our animals are in the best hands possible.

this is a very friendly and professional veterinary surgery. But the staff here had no problem dealing with my little pet, no shaking of heads as to how someone could love a rat or nervous of being bitten! They are very used to exotic pets and handled her with an expert touch and she is slowing getting better. She didn't bite them either. The price here is a bit steep but other vets that i had phoned didn't want to see a pet rat either because they are not familar with their needs or afraid to overinject??

An emergency; why else would i be calling the vet at 8.30 on a sunday morning?…read more er, yup, an emergency all right, i told wifey i had booked the cat into the cattery yesterday, i had stretched the truth considerably. so crossing my fingers and all other bendy bits of my anatomy, i call Ark. Rebecca says "of course, no problem, when and for how long!?" er... in about an hour for five nights, thanks! ...and that is how Ark saved my marriage and the holiday and possibly various bendy bits of my anatomy. At 13.09 euro a night they are not the cheepest but the beast was well looked after and for short stays, utterly brilliant.

His name was Paul and he could cope…read more Walking down the road with Pepper the other day (dog in case you had not guessed) she started to cough a bit. I am not a fussy dog owner rushing off to the Vet every time a dog sneezes but with Pepper I visit Nursing Home so it is important that she stays healthy. Trotted off to the Vet and Paul was able to see us quite quickly. When I am sick I want to see a Vet - no hanging around. He checked her over and said 'Kennel cough'! Be warned dog owners it is going around again. Checked her knees as I had noticed her 'Bunny hopping' - looks funny but not a good sign. Bit of a shock as he said that her right knee was worse and that surgery might be needed and better it was done sooner rather than later when she may be in more pain as she gets older. Tuesday was mentioned! Small panic thinking is it covered by Pet Plan and yes it was. Last Tuesday Pepper had her surgery and everyone there was so kind and considerate. Paul was available to talk when I needed to check that she was doing okay. I slept downstairs as it was easier to keep an eye on her - apart from my sleeping and Pepper making her way upstairs the night of her surgery and back down again while I was sound asleep! Housebound for a while - stairs blocked - and big collar to stop her licking the wound until healed a bit. Stitches were removed today and all well - gentle exercise and small amount of physiotherapy and to be carried up and down stairs. They were great. Pepper obviously was happy to go back there as no cowering from Paul so perhaps she is not quite the 'Woose' I thought. Would I go back? I have to but happily.

After several years of paying a monthly fee to cover vet visits for my cat, I was appalled at the…read morecharges that would have applied had I gone through with euthanasia and cremation at Village Vets Dundrum. Up until that point, my vet visits had been covered. But for the final consultation with a vet, the charge was going to be 160 euro. Cremation and euthanasia would have been 344, with a required "cremation package" of an additional 380 euro minimum for a paw print of the cat and a "casket" or paper container of ashes. The total cost for euthanising my cat would have been about 780 euro. This approach to end of life care for my cat seemed to be the epitome of taking advantage of a vulnerable pet owner. The independent vet down the street will charge me less than half that for a cremation with ashes returned. If I don't want the ashes returned, the cost will be 130 euro (and perhaps I will make a donation to the DSPCA). Corporate vets have the means to build shiny premises and hire advertising agencies to write slogans that include terms like "family" and "village" and "care". I have no complaints about the nice young vets who work for Village Vets, although I never saw one who had more than 10 years experience, which would indicate that this corporate is hiring young vets who they can pay less. Still, for anyone seeking a vet I would NOT recommend Village Vets. Look past the bells and whistles of corporate gloss and find an independent vet, if at all possible.

I unfortunately have a very unlucky dog who has twice had to have extensive care in Village Vets…read more The one great positive to come out of that is experiencing the thorough and compassionate care of all the staff at Village Vets Dundrum. The vets themselves know how to expertly treat your pets, while the care given by the veterinary nurses was such a comfort to Buddy while he was so unwell. I simply could not recommend this veterinary clinic more
