The book choices for preschool children were minimal - a single small bookcase of books - most of which were ancient. (There was a Dick and Jane book there if you want to gauge age of the books). The books were poorly organized and many were very worn. As my granddaughter said, "This bookstore is boring." It was a shame as small communities need good bookstores. This wasn't it. Walked across the sidewalk and visited Book Bug which is a children's book store. Again, a wide selection of books, comfy sitting space and a playhouse for the kiddos. Tails is located in a convenient spot downtown with good parking spaces all around it. It's easy to pop inside take a peek (or stay for an hour) and go shop at another store, like the Paper Gourmet about 20 feet away. Tails is open Monday-Friday 11:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday 10am-2:00pm. Real hours! Not bad for an all-volunteer business. They have a fairly wide selection (which means for any book lover it's hard to leave empty-handed). Lots of Scholastic books for kids. Some military history. Recent NY Times bestsellers, too. Many of the books are in new condition and so you can even do your Christmas shopping here. Some books definitely are not pristine, but that's okay. There are suggested donation prices posted (that even Amazon can't beat) and if you're feeling generous tell them to "keep the change" and know that the dogs and cats will really appreciate your generosity. If you're a bibliophile looking for a fun, friendly volunteer opportunity, this is it. Apply within. Do you have books you no longer want? Hard for some of us to believe, but if you need to re-home some of your literary friends then please consider donating them to Tails. I had been donating mine to the library, but now most of them go to Tails (sorry EPL). They will take books as well as magazines. Drop them off and enjoy the good feeling you get from sharing them with others. It does have one downside, for me. Given the recent renovation inside the building, the place off-gases like crazy. I'm hopeful that as time goes on it will resolve itself, but please use no VOC-paint and finish next time guys (who I realize are not affiliated with Tails, so let's not take it out on them). Overall, it's a cozy book nook that you can peacefully enjoy and even make new friends. The volunteers that I've met have all been sweet, kind, and very helpful. Auburn is blessed to have this spot open up. Oh, if only it stays here!!

My bf and I got lost in here (although it is quite organized), just looking for a diamond on the rough book to take home back in April 2025. I only had $8 in cash in me and the kind bookseller let me buy a $10 Jewish hardcover cookbook for only $8! While I am trying to buy LESS books as I downsize, I plan to stop by Erasmus periodically to look and perhaps, give a book a home! Parking is street parking.

The store is inside a 1920's German-cottage style house (I could be wrong, but that's my guess) and when you enter you can feel the warmth from the books. The proprietors, Philip and Bill, love the written word. This shows both through conversation and the items that they carry. On the main floor you will find mostly hardback poetry fiction/Lit, 1st editions, Children's and rare books. Downstairs are History, theology, nonfiction and paperbacks. I usually go there and look around, jumping from one section and and floor, to the other and maybe back. Never do I go with a book in mind, but wander and let the book find me. If you need a special book- just ask- it could be around, or they can find it for you.
