This wasn't my first ride on a Mid American. They've always been clean, good drivers, but tonight…read morewas exceptional. Took the coach to Frozen On Ice at Scott Trade in STL. The snow was coming down before we began our trip. Cindy our driver, and Glenda our concierge, were not only a fantastic team but made even the nervous passengers feel at ease. Glenda came around with candy for everyone and had a little trivia to pass the time for the up'ing travelers. Traffic was so backed up, because of the weather, but Cindy maneuvered around the traffic and got us to the show on time. It was wonderful to be dropped RIGHT at the door. The snow continued while we were at the show. When we came out, she was again Right at the door. How convenient! Especially with all the little "Elsa's" not completely dressed for the weather. We had to wait to start the snowy trek home. There were 3 passengers missing for quite a while, and Glenda went on a hunt for them. She and Cindy were patient and polite to the absent passengers, and Cindy attended to us waiting patiently on the coach. Cindy was an EXCELLENT driver and made everyone feel very safe. The driving conditions with crazy semi's zooming by was nerve wracking, but Cindy handled it with ease. Glenda brought the Frozen DVD to watch on the way home. It was a great distraction for anxious passengers and the tired young uns. When we arrived back, Glenda helped people clean off the 3+ inches of snow mounded on their vehicles. Cindy waited in the coach with passengers while their cars warned up. WOW....these ladies were impressive!!! If I could give 10 stars I would!!!

Following a recent trip where we used Cavallo buses I felt compelled to share my experience. Our…read moredriver was less than helpful or friendly. Most professional drivers assist the passengers, especially the elderly, as they exit the bus. This was not our experience as he would jump off to go light his cigarettes. His lack of respect for work zone speed limits was appalling. Over 70 mph with construction equipment and workers present and this went on for several miles. The equipment such as the DVD player, our main source of entertainment for the 5 hour drive did not work all weekend. The icing on the cake was when navigating through a parking lot he crashed into scaffolding shattering two large windows and did not stop to inspect until we insisted. While it was shatter proof glass shards still sprayed on passengers. The next best thing was duct tape to try and hold the window in. Needless to say it was a very very uncomfortable trip as well as frightful. The final straw for us was that the owner did not even show the courtesy of a return call once this was reported upon our return. This company seemed totally unconcerned with the safety of 50 passengers.

We are going on an important trip to Washington DC, and this company's failures have set us back at least ten hours. This means we will probably miss several morning activities, and a hotel room that we have already paid for. We were supposed to leave in 2 Cavallo buses at 5 am Central time. Because of this company, we left at 9:30 in 1 Cavallo bus and 2 school buses. We were supposed to meet the 2nd Cavallo bus in Indiana around noon, but because (again) of this company, we will get the 2nd bus at 6 pm by the earliest. This means we will not get into DC until 4 am Eastern time at the earliest. We are meant to be up tomorrow around 6:30 EST. On top of this, the air conditioning and wifi do not work on our bus, leading to us all suffering in the heat. Will never use this company again, and will tell anyone I can to avoid them.

Since the tour was 3 hours were long we felt we should have had one or two bathroom breaks and a place to stop and pick up a hot chocolate or hot tea on a chili evening. In past years this was the normal program for them. Even when we got back to try Taylor's bookstore and oddities it was closed. So the evening would have been much more enjoyable if we had at least one stop along the way and a place to pick up a hot drink. At each stop we were given a history of the stop and a recounting of some of the "Hauntings"'that had occurred. We never got to actually see the spaces where, for example, the sightings appeared. "We don't go in there"'or "we can't go in there"'was a common phrase. The tour could have been at least an hour shorter, since the stories all started to sound the same, given that we didn't actually see any of the interiors of the buildings where things supposedly took place, with one exception ( a tunnel used for hiding escaped slaves using the Underground Railroad ). I wouldn't go again unless they change it up and let the group go inside the buildings or rooms. Way too expensive for an evening walk around downtown Alton.

There was a lot of information about St. Louis history and culture, not just the usual but also the unusual, which was fun. I would have liked a little more detail about the specific architects and buildings themselves, but there was a lot to get in. The tour lasted exactly 2.5 hours and that was enough. We went to the Hotel St. Louis for lunch afterward so we could spend time in that fantastic art deco space. The restaurant is open breakfast through evening, so it would be a good spot to take a break whenever you might be downtown. The sheer number of truly beautiful historic buildings in downtown St. Louis is so impressive. Yes, some are neglected, but their elegance and scale are stunning. It was interesting to see up close the neighborhood and streets that I read about in the news. I recommend this tour for anyone, but in particular it would be great for locals to take it and see our city for the jewel it is. The walk was easy, the guide (Glenn) was fun and informative, and I was surprised at how spotless downtown is.

Warren and Sharon, our guides, were thorough and enthusiastic and their love of and appreciation for downtown Saint Louis was immediately apparent. Sharon did a fantastic job focusing on the less well-known history of women in downtown Saint Louis (Madame Chateau. Harriet Scott, Sacajawea and Eliza Hat raft, among others). A fantastic way to spend a Saturday morning!
