Tankardstown - Scallops, amazing

We looked at this place as a potential wedding venue…read more The setting was perfect, the main house was spectacular, the grounds were awe-inspiring. So, why didn't we use the venue? We found the staff not overly accommodating and not willing to be helpful.... we felt it was an odd way to conduct business in a climate where most businesses were struggling and certainly all others in the service industry were climbing over each other to secure business. Still, worth popping in for a coffee if you are passing. there was a HUGE dog that lived by the rental cottages - gorgeous, totally worth going to see him if you are there!

With minimal mobile phone reception, this off-main-road country house could be a haven for someone…read morelooking to escape into the countryside for a nice wander around the grounds, through their rustic on-site shop and a cool drink in the beer garden. Unfortunately, I was looking for Sky Sports and a nice meal after a mass in Rathkenny. The staff were very helpful in trying to locate Sky Sports on the terrestrial television, but to no avail. No phone reception was the final kick for me, I thought, then, after a 25 minute wait for service after ordering, I was served a sub-standard cesar salad with unwashed lettuce, rubbery cheese, cold, hard bacon and what tasted like mayonnaise as dressing. However, I must have been alone in my bad-day as the other 7 who were with me enjoyed their meal, albeit that the spicy lamb pie was a little too spicy for those who ordered it and the pastry topping was an over-cooked puff pastry hat for the pie and the chips were over-seasoned and as-if from frozen. The salmon got the thumbs up. The stand-out element of food for Tankardstown has to be the sea-food chowder. "The best I have ever tasted" so, sea-food lovers, Tankardstown house is the place for you. The area is picturesque and the toilets are of high quality with the lovely touch of molton brown and candles. I think if they put a little bit more effort into the food, strip it back and get the basics right (and maybe get a phone-reception booster, oh, and Sky Sports..!! just me?) then this definitely has the potential to be a 5-star venue.

What a delightful hotel; friendly and attentive staff. My room key needed to be reactivated daily…read more Nice rooms; I appreciate having the option of a shower or bath. Most hotels offer shower only rooms after remodeling. Breakfast in the hotel was amazing; included fresh fruits and juices, the traditional Irish entrees or you could opt for pancakes. Every meal includes potatoes; good potatoes. Something special about this hotel is the lavender balm. I meant to request more before I left. You rub this on your wrists or neck before bed and it is supposed to relax you and promote better sleep. It smells so good.

I asked him are there any decent people left in Ireland and I was given a snigger as a reply. I'm quite disappointed that I was treated like this customer service and a small budget compassion needs to be addressed by Management. I am in the hospitality business myself and if any of my staff treat any customer with such coldness and lack of concern, I would be deeply upset. the first that people see on arrival and departure and I really feel that this gentleman has left down my overall experience shall I say is not the best.

Recently visited this hotel for a three night stay with my wife, my 11 year old son and 3 year old…read moredaughter. With our room booking we received day passes to Tayto Park, Dublin Zoo and Funtasia Waterpark for a very reasonable. The hotel is located a short drive from Ashbourne town which is a great place to pop in for a meal with plenty of really good restaurants. The hotel also has a nice selection of dishes on their al a carte menu as well as a buffet. We dined in he second night from the buffet and found the food to be excellent, especially the desserts which included beautiful profiteroles filled with creme patisserie (not cream which is a sin) and a wedge of cheese cake which was light and delicious, melting in the mouth making you feel like having a second one would not hurt the waist line too much. Every member of staff from the cleaning staff to duty managers always greeted us with a smile and a friendly hello and you are really made feel at home while staying there. The rooms are warm, comfortable and modern making each night after a hectic day a joy to return to. The hotel ensures that all guests are catered for especially the children with nightly activities organised for all the family which included a kids disco and bingo. We attended the kids disco with DJ Richie B who really entertained the kids giving out prizes and covering children with snow from his snow machine while playing frozen songs. I could go on and on but to sum everything up this is a fantastic hotel with fantastic staff in a fantastic location. We loved it and will definitely be back.

The hair dryer was plugged in through the drawer & took me a minute to locate but worked well. There was a Nespresso machine, lemongrass, Cedarwood shampoo & body wash, hand soap, and lotion. There was no conditioner, face towels, AC, or top sheet. The room was spacious, but the plugs are not next to the bed they are by the TV so you have to get up if you need your electronics. The vent won't turn off in the bathroom if the light is on which is annoying if you like to leave the light on. The bed was very comfortable but the doors slam every time you come in so I am sure that disturbs neighbors. Overall decent place.

Additionally, the dining room was once probably a smoker friendly area, but it still has the lingering smell of smoke and an aging carpet. Further, the people working here seemed a bit downtrodden and less friendly than the other hotels I have stayed in Ireland. I think this place would be better rated as a 3 star hotel in its current state, but with a bit more love and care, I can see this hotel being restored back to its original glory.
