What is CrossFit:…read more Constantly varied: different movements per session and within each session High-intensity: Your max effort Functional movements - Moves you do in everyday life - Squat, pull, jump, sit-up Designed for universal scalability (adapted for all levels and abilities) The workouts are an hour - that includes warm-up, Workout of the Day, and mobility (stretching) The schedule is plenty for anyone to find a slot that works for their schedule and class options are pretty cool. Try the paddle board class or one-on-one with the Coach. Clocktower-CrossFit is the newest BOX to open in Chelsea - located behind the old Teddy Bear factory; led by head coach Steve Koski, former coach at HyperFit. The owners' group of Clocktower came together to create a new CrossFit community in greater Chelsea area. Box just opened June 1st and they have all been very welcoming and encouraging, even though I am no where near their level of fitness. The facility is outstanding. A lot of space, open air and nicely appointed. A strip of turf runs along the back of the Box for warm-ups, mobility work (stretching out) and field-athlete training. There is plenty of equipment for when the classes get larger. TRX bands for adapted pullups, pushups, etc. Great bathrooms with shower and plenty of space for all of it. The owners have so much experience in the practice of CrossFit; I appreciate their attention to details - like the overhead fans to keep the air moving, the water bottle fill station and the hair ties in the bathroom for when mine breaks. It's the little things sometimes. Coach Koski also has a degree in nutrition. I am very optimistic of my ability to implement the life-style changes to my eating habits, under his instruction. I am not a complete novice when it comes to a balanced diet, however, I don't have the expertise and am happy to have found a Box and Coach that can help guide me. Clocktower-CrossFit is the ultimate CrossFit community Box. I cannot praise it enough. Contact them for a free class, get a 10-visit punch card to try it out for a few weeks, join the beginner CHIME class at a smaller membership fee, or do the all inclusive. There are so many options.

So, what can be said about a gym, a Crossfit gym, that has not yet been written 100s of times…read morealready? Well, from a first time crossfit participant, well, CHIME participant, I can say that this place rocks. I have done other, 'similar' classes, even taught a few, but this place is defined by more than their equipment and facility- it is defined by its people and its atmosphere. From day one, yes, you will see that the gym itself is immaculate, but it is the welcoming people that make up Clocktower Crossfit that make the difference. The head coach, Steve Koski, has a deep knowledge, both practical and academic, that allows him the expertise of coaching in proper movement to avoid injury- very important. And while I could go on about the rest of the coaches- Bea, Chris, Steve; it is easier to read about them here: http://www.clocktower-crossfit.com/about Everyone is made to feel welcome and everyone is encouraged to push to their ability- a little beyond. I have met some great people here and look forward to making my own improvements. I would completely recommend Clocktower Crossfit to anyone- the newbie and the experienced.

Cyril White, Shannon and Reagan are coaching the Couch to Crossfit 6-week program; which is a special offered 6-weeks for $95. Talk about reasonable! Six weeks of personal coaching, scaled workouts and small class sizes for individual attention. This guy knows his stuff. Everyone is welcoming and upbeat. I didn't feel out of place at all - though the thought of joining an new elite level gym had me thinking I should have before stepping in the doors. My third class is tonight and I am really looking forward to getting back to it and working hard. The place is small but very effective setup and layout. Great equipment, bathroom/changing room and even bottled water and sports drinks at cost out of the fridge. Just like any Crossfit gym, there is loud music, and shouts of encouragement. They make the workouts fun with workout parties on Fridays and special events or classes here and there. Check out Country Crossfit webpage. You can check in, log your workout, and reserve your spot for the class you want. Country Crossfit will give you a free class to check them out, or if you get a referral from a member (me), then you get one month of free membership to take as many classes as you want and get a feel for who they are and what they do. They really do a great job of creating a comfortable, inclusive atmosphere. Don't be intimidated - come check them out. PM me if you want a referral - I don't get anything from it (just so you know). Come with a positive attitude, ready to work and you will like it.

I came for a follow-up mammogram and had an incredibly distressing experience. From the…read moreradiologist's lack of due diligence to the painful and dismissive treatment by the technicians--and even a religious interruption during my exam--every aspect of my care was unacceptable. The radiologist, Dr. Haddlesey, recommended yearly MRIs staggered with mammograms. While that might sound appropriate, it clearly showed she hadn't reviewed my medical record. I used to alternate MRIs and mammograms, but I now have a defibrillator and pacemaker, which make MRIs ineffective due to image distortion. This is extensively documented in my chart. I now receive molecular breast imaging, and my most recent scan was just a month ago. Failing to review this information is not just negligent--it's dangerous. The appointment itself was just as bad. I have never found mammograms to be painful but my first technician, Trish, caused me significant pain while trying to position my breast. She then blamed my internal device--even though the pain wasn't anywhere near it. I calmly asked her to stop repositioning me and simply take the images. I said I have many medical conditions and I am used to pain so I just needed her to proceed. Her response was to walk out abruptly, leaving me half-dressed and confused with no explanation. The second technician, Sheryl, came in and resumed the exam. I was still in pain and had to re-explain my medical history--something Trish never asked about. As the imaging resumed, a building-wide Catholic prayer began playing over the intercom. Sheryl asked, "Would you like to stop the exam to pray?" I said no and expressed that I found the announcement to be inappropriate. Her response? "You can choose not to listen." But how do you ignore something that is literally being broadcast throughout an entire facility? I understand that Chelsea is a Catholic hospital, but religious content should never be pervasively imposed during care. It was disruptive and completely unprofessional. Between the radiologist's failure to review my chart, the painful and dismissive behavior of the technicians, and the imposition of religious messaging, I was left shocked and angry. Patients--especially those with complex medical histories--deserve attentive, science-based, and compassionate care. I have had equally bad care at another breast imaging facility associated with Trinity Health so I am now actively seeking to transfer my breast imaging and all related care to the University of Michigan. I recommend that others do the same.

For two very full days you can get the authentic experience of what it is like to be a Michigan…read moreWolverine football player! My expectations were high, and the MMFE over delivered. The ENTIRE coaching staff and assistants invested their precious time attempting to prepare us wanna-be college athletes for a game. We had direct interactions with the guys we see on TV; it was surreal. The event started with picking up your gear (jersey with name and number), autographed football, and other Michigan football swag. And then we had the first team lunch, which included Brady Hoke, Greg Mattison, Al Borges, the position coaches, and numerous great assistants. At the various meals I had the privilege of sitting next to Al Borges, Greg Mattison, Fred Jackson, Mike Hart, and accomplished alumni. Hanging around throughout the event were notable people such as Dave Brandon, Lloyd Carr, Gary Moeller, the legendary Jon Falk, Jim Brandstatter, and some former players. And that was just the kick off! After lunch we headed to Schembechler Hall to hear from the coaches, go over the play book, and tour the facilities. Just like the players, we were moved around town in buses, and had the actual pre-game meals. Dinner was overlooking the field in Michigan Stadium in the concourse where Brady Hoke gave his first talk to the team, the team, the team. The day wrapped up with bed checks, and hot chocolate with cookies. Day two started with a 6 AM wake up knock on the door. After another meal with the who's who in Michigan football we headed to the practice fields for position training, and our first scrimmage. After lunch we reviewed the films of our practice efforts; Coach Hoke said some of us won't be getting a scholarship. And then it was time for the big event. Jon Falk greeted us as we entered the locker room at Michigan Stadium where we found personalized lockers with our jersey hanging. There were some teary eyes in that room, followed by nervous energy. We huddled at the tunnel with our fans cheering us, then took the field jumping up to touch a Michigan banner followed by the coaches. Just like on a real football Saturday. After warm ups we scrimmaged for about hour. My wife took a lot of photos and videos, including my interception! As if things weren't awesome enough, after the scrimmage we were introduced individually over the public address system with our pictures on the giant scoreboards. The event wrapped up with a team photo, and a final thank you to the coaches and the event coordinators. After spending four years with this incredible coaching staff a student-athlete's life will be enhanced in ways too valuable to measure. The coaches know football, are intense, and very entertaining. Everyone involved with this event was amazing, and true blue. The cost of the MMFE is not inexpensive, but it is priceless!
