This is a wine tasting cave that represents the Quinta Das Carvalhos, a Portugese owned winery and port wine maker based in the Douro Valley. Compared to the more commercial offerings on the riverfront with big names of Sandeman, Calem, Offley, Porto Cruz etc., this is a charming, quaint alternative, and Portuguese-owned to boot. Their Gaia warehouses/ wine aging cellars are about 3 km away from the main waterfront. Therefore, this little tasting room serves as their representation at the river front.
Note that you have to walk up the sidestreet next to Sandeman, and then turn into a narrow alleyway to find them...less than 2 minutes away from the entrance to Sandeman and Porto Cruz.
This is quite literally a cave (dark inside), but also a tasting room and a salesroom. The TV plays gorgeous scenes of the Douro Valley and invites you to lose yourself in the magic of the port wine.
I was pulled in off the street by the very animated representative who is fluent in English/Portugese. He describes in a fast clip that Royal Oporto (a label of the Das Carvalhos house ) wins top Portugese wine and port awards. He has family who live in Rhode Island and is welcoming to U.S. Americans. This man will also give you an overview of port wine making and invite you to do one of four pre-set tastings. You can also buy crackers and olives to help you with cleansing the palate between. I had their Lagrima, which is a port mixed with Moscato, and it is a total delight. Their rose is lovely. I also enjoyed their reserve (aged 20 years) tawny. It's worth going up a back street and getting a more personal, smaller, intimate tasting here if you have time.
I have done a commercial tasting at Calem and another tasting at Porto Cruz... I would recommend Porto Cruz in addition to this spot. read more
