Place to go to drink with locals. We went for a beer, were offered cod fritters (pastéus de bacalhau) and stayed for dinner. This became our "local" bar as it was close to our hotel. The manager was friendly and helpful. read more

We had a great dinner here with a great bottle of wine. Our waiter turned out to be the owner of the place. It's only been open for 6 months or so. My guess is they're going to do very well. We plan to come back in a couple of days with some other friends. read more

Amazing bar near Matriz, Ponta Delgada that has been open for 5 months after new owners took over the old bar. Local beers, wine, liquor, and food are among many things this local gem offers. Lovely service, good food. The clams were solid (a lighter, herbier style than the bbqed so many places around here make) and we loved the white wine our server recommended (Cerrado Do Mar 2014). Our server also gave us some great tips about where to buy wine and Azorean treats for our hotel and for home. My only down side was the ambiance wasn't particularly special... But then again, that's not what matters most. Could certainly do worse for dinner. read more

You've got to admire a place which at one point was nothing more than a water canal a lifetime ago. Arco da Velha is a good example of repurposed space. They also provide a good example of non-seafood Azorean fare. If you tire of the abundant fish and other food which originates from the ocean, then Arco de Velha will cure what ails ya, offering grass-fed options. I opted for the steaks, something I seldom do in restaurants. But here everything was local, as in Azorean beef. They give you sauce options, which is cool, and top every steak with cooked garlic cloves and red peppers. It was delicious. Azoreans have a thing for dessert. I am not sure why that is, maybe because they've developed a national habit for ending meals with sugar. The chocolate mousse Arco made was delicious, doubtless made with fresh milk from the thousands of cows which dot the landscape on any given day. read more
