I came on a Saturday evening to watch the Leafs playoff game thinking it would be packed and I would have a hard time finding a seat. When we arrived around 6:45, there were still plenty of tables to pick. The staff let us choose wherever we wanted to sit. We decided to sit at a table right in front of the big screen to watch the game. Despite it being a busy night and the tables were full, service was still really good. The servers were really nice and attentive, and we received our drinks and food fast. We ordered: - BBQ Chicken Nachos ($19.50) 9/10. Big portion, chips were crispy, sauces were good. - Steak Frites ($18.00) 8/10. Fries were crispy. Steak was decent Overall, we wish we knew about this place sooner! We love the pub vibes here, service was great, prices are good, food was good, atmosphere was great. They even have a pool table in the back. So my friend says, "I know a dive bar nearby that serves Irish Nachos" So many questions. First, "dive bar?" What is this, a Nick Nolte movie? My friend is pretty discerning when it comes to places to eat so suggesting a "dive bar" was out of character. Second, "Irish Nachos?" What the what? It's Nachos but instead of corn tortilla chips, they use waffle cut fries. Fries = Potatoes. Potatoes = Irish. Hence the name. So I said yes. Upon entering the bar, I'm like, "mmm-yup, pretty divey. The barkeep welcomed us into what looked like, as their slogan goes, Richmond Hill's first pub. Um, yes. I believe you. Darned near empty. I mean, like two tables with groups and one with a couple that looked like recovering meth addicts. "Recovering" is the key word there. They were perfectly well behaved...just really worn-out looking. #RichmondHillStrong The service was really good. Friendly. Down to earth. Efficient. Full marks there. The Irish Nachos stole the show. Who knew? I mean, I'm sure a native Irishman would look at you sideways and ask, "what the feck you talkin' aboot" if you asked them for Irish Nachos, but who cares? The waffle fries were cooked to perfection, the cheese was melted nicely, the chives were, um, chivey, and the sour cream was generously dolloped atop the impressive mound-o-food. Delectable! We ate here four times in the past four weeks, but will not return. The service was very good; the wait staff was always friendly. On our second visit, one pizza we ordered came out with the wrong toppings. It wasn't terrible and we were hungry, so we ate it as is. During our most recent visit, our steak sandwich was quite underdone. We don't like sending food back as a rule, but we couldn't eat it like that. We requested that they throw it back on the grill. When they brought it back out, it was obviously microwaved. The buns were steaming hot and the meat had a bad taste to it. We decided to eat the French fries and skip the sandwich. The manager heard us talking about it and apologized, removed it from our bill, and offered us something else. They did everything right in terms of trying to make things better. Despite the good customer service, we won't return as to us it's not worth the gamble that the kitchen will get things right or do things properly. It's a shame. read more

This is an okay pub. I'd give them some slack for trying to operate during these pandemic times. I haven't visited this place before the pandemic, so I can't speak to how it was before. There was a wonderful lovely atmosphere! The servers are all lovely--kudos for them working in this pandemic! They made adequate measures to operate during the pandemic. The patio they set up was very aesthetic, but it was a tiny bit dark for reading the menu. The food itself...wasn't great. I'm sort of surprised every item strikes out, so I think a few drinks are necessary to not realize it. The payment process was a little awkward. The machine couldn't actually process the payment outside, it's too far for the signal apparently. The waitress had to run inside right after every payment so the machine can be in-range. I'm basing my rating on my recent visit which was better than previous visits, long ago. There are a number of specials. The day I went, a pint of beer was only $5.25 before 6 pm. They also had reasonably priced dinner specials. For $12 they offered lasagne, Ceasar salad and garlic bread. You must like cheese to order this because there was cheese everywhere (on the salad, on the bread and of course, in the lasagne). I was able to get them to hold the cheese from the cheesy bread. The food was good in terms of the taste and portion size. Service was better than it's been in the past. Maybe we got lucky with our efficient and helpful server, Alison. The place is outdated, worn down, renovated a while back - but still looks worn down, and full of people that time forgot. Hey! That's the charm of the place! I'm not going to sell you the bar in this review. It's an OK place but I've recently started going back after years of LBDM taking my hard earned cash and them forgetting my name as I punch in what seems to be the 18-20% norm now for gratuities - the times are a changing from the good o'days when 20% was reserved for GREAT service - I guess they need danger pay as they freeze in those LBD. Maybe it's trying to go back to my simpler days when I was younger but the place still feels the same - and looks the same! The copious amount of amber ale of the gods coupled with near-food hot out of the microwave - especially the lasagna as the top cheese sticks and burns the roof of your mouth! Argh! You would think I would remember that! I guess that's the cost of re-initiation to the pub. Ugh. If you should venture here, pub food is standard fare. Will fill you up but not leave a burning hole in the wallet. Don't expect Michelin quality plating - they barely have plates! :D Check online for their menu. The Irish fries/nachos are pretty good. I have a love hate relationship. they have a lot of events but the food is terrible and the chairs uncomfortable. It's always kinda empty so there's no problem getting in. The regulars are nice and friendly. The wait staff phone it in but are nice. They put montreal steak seasoning on their cesars. The manager is not the nicest person. I came here to watch one of the Raptors games with my friends. We were able to get a table in a very packed bar. The service was good considering that they only had a couple of waiters to server everyone. They have 1 big TV, but the number of supplementary TVs (for those without a clear view of the big TV) could be better. There were a couple of TVs that were turned off. I ordered the cauliflower bites as an appetizer. They were good, but the portion size was much smaller than expected. I ordered the game-day special to split with a friend (3lbs wings, fries, a pitcher of beer). We chose sweet chili heat and cajun for the flavors. The wings tasted pretty good and the size was good. Being a Richmond Hill local and growing up with Archibald's always within sight I feel a responsibility to protect its review rating against the negative nelly's who would disparage Richmond Hill's oldest and first pub (AHEM...Jen K...lol). What makes a "good pub", well let's think about it as a group for a second...alright class have you had time to write down your answers, well allow me to read from the answer key and as we go through the list of MUST HAVE's, we'll grade my beloved Archie's against it. 1. Multiple televisions for sports and other viewing - Archie's: CHECK! For a small pub there is no shortage of screens around, with the 2012/2013 NFL Football season kicking off last night it was actually nice to see a couple of boisterous fans getting into the game, cheering and screaming as the Giants took on the Cowboys. Yes they were loud but if you don't like people cheering for sports well then...... 2. An Eclectic mix of Beers both on Tap and by the bottle - Archie's: CHECK! This for me was a huge plus about this place, filled with amazing surprises. Who would have thought that my local spot would have Granville Island Pale Ale (a BC beer I had been searching to try) on tap! Not to mention a host of other ontario craft beers (steam whistle) and several international brands such as: Guinness, Caffrey's, Stiegl and others. - PRO TIP: Order a bucket of 4 steamwhistle's and you get to keep the bucket ($16.50) 3. Pub Fare - Archie's: CHECK! They have all the classics and don't pretend for a moment to be fine dining. Admittedly it was wing night and the Cajun wings were not so hot (I agree with Jen K here...and here only) but the Hot-Honey were as good as anywhere else that offers $5/lb wings. However, I ordered their Chicken Souvlaki with a Greek salad and it was delicious! Not to mention my salad came with an entire wedge of Feta Cheese (YA a WEDGE!!). Another one of our group ordered a BBQ chicken wrap and House Salad and had nothing but good things to say about it. One x-factor with their food was the presentation and care put into the plating of it. I've been to 'nicer' spots who took less care with the presentation of their entrees. A nice surprise! 4 Service - Archie's: CHECK! Our server was friendly and attentive, even being on the more empty side of the pub (the other side was PACKED) she check on us regularly and always made sure our glasses were topped up and all our needs were met (18% tip for her). Plus she was pretty cute (and coming here before I know they hire great looking staff ;) ) 5. Ambiance - Archie's: CHECK! The true pub feel is achieved here with exposed wood beams above and around, a classic wood and brass bar and plenty of pool tables and beer neon beer signs adorning the wall. Yes a tad on the dim side in terms of lighting but honestly how would ugly people hook up at bars if it wasnt for alcohol and dim lighting? I say keep the lights down low Archie....keep them lights down low. Pros' - Free, unsecured Wifi and despite what others might say the speed is on par with any Starbucks, Second Cup or other free Wifi spot - A patio...yes they have one and it has great seating. Patios are a rarity along Yonge in Richmond Hill and this one doesn't disappoint. Cons' - Something could be done about the couple of flies that kept bugging us at our table and the temperature where we were sitting was very warm (perhaps it was the heat of this area that was drawing the flies in). However, let's remember it IS SUMMER and flies do exist in THE SUMMER. You can't escape that, and with the high traffic moving in and out of this spot it's bound to happen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So after comparing your answers with the PUB GOLD STANDARD, what do ya have? Writing this review really saddens me since there was a time when I though Archibald's was an awesome pub. I recently went here to have dinner after about a 2-3 year absence and it simply wasn't what I remember. For dinner I ordered the chicken souvlaki pita with a side Greek salad. The pita was ok but nothing special, the chicken was nicely seasoned but a tad dry, the pita it was served on was store bought and the tzatziki was lacking the garlic kick. The side Greek salad was run of the mill, the only upside was that it was served with a big hunk of feta, being a fan of cheese I enjoyed this. The bar does have a lot of taps but they are big name brands only, with the closest thing to a craft beer being Granville Island. When I inquired about their bottled beers the waitress said they had quite a few which got me excited. When I asked to see the list of bottled beers I was told there wasn't one, when I asked if they had anything from a local brewery I was told no, tisk tisk! (I did see a steam whistle sign while walking out which last time I checked was a local brewery, I hate being misinformed! However a bottle list would certainly go a long way)/ The place itself is an average bar with a few TV's, a pool table and a couple of video games, so one could kill some time here. The service was adequate but not overwhelming. I did notice that they had a couple of traditional British items on the menu (i.e. steak and kidney pie) and if I return I will give one of these a shot. Another positive is that they do have daily specials (wing night, nacho night etc). If you are in the area this maybe your best bet for a bar if you want to avoid a chain restaurant however I would not go out of my way to come here. *2.5 stars for Richmond Hill's first pub read more

The oldest bar in Richmond Hill. Pretty cool, kinda, well no, not really. It's okay. For some reason I keep finding myself at this little dive bar in Richmond Hill. I don't know why. It's almost addicting but I guess everyone is entitled to their usual dive hang out spot. There really is nothing special about it. Beers aren't expensive but not cheap. Food isn't good but isn't bad. Service isn't slow but isn't fast. See where I'm heading with this? A lot of in between makes this place okay. There are 2 pool tables, a Foosball table, pinball machine, Golden Tee, a big projection T.V., a few other little T.V.s, One big screen, a patio in the back, a fireplace, and nightly events like karaoke or a live band. They even have food specials every night. OH! They have free wi-fi. You know, after writing all this I'm kinda starting to like this place more... kinda. Good times are had here but you will have to bring those good times with you. Overall, it's a typical pub. Nothing special. The oldest in Richmond Hill might give it a bit more of an aura but that doesn't do it for me. Prices are average and so is the food and service. I still don't know why I always come here! We have frequented Archibald's on numerous occasions, as we live in the area. This is a convenient place with a quaint outdoor patio. The quality of service is inconsistent, with the majority of the ladies appearing quite tired and road weary. PROS: There are a number of specials through the week, such as $5.00 domestic beer cans on Sundays and 1/2 price appies on Mondays (selection) during designated times. For a quick nash or beer, I would recommend going during the Happy Hour slots. CONS: Beer tends to be served warm/flat on occasion (especially Stella) from the tap. Food is microwaved and bland. This is especially true for the calamari rings and nachos from the bag with melted shredded cheese from No Frill? Prices are embarrassingly steep for sub-par food and atmosphere. Local drunkards line the bar stools and have eventually become staples and the pulse of the pub. Overall, a fine place for a quick drink and snack. read more

We went there on a Wednesday for half price wings. The place itself is spacey, lots of TVs, and great for chilling out overall. The staff are friendly. The wings didn't taste good and I have had way better. Could be because it was last call and the kitchen was closing. But hey, they were half priced. So I'm not complaining. I wouldn't pay full price for them though. Stick to waffle fries if you ask me! Free parking, free WiFi, clean washrooms. Nice good size patio area. Went for happy hour on a Wednesday , and it wasn't very busy. Server was friendly but very scattered. They always appeared confused and messed up a few things on our order. Our group tried a number of things on the menu. Everything was just okay. This place is just okay overall. Huh...I'm actually a little surprised there isn't more Yelp love for this place. I've only been there a few times, but I like it. Then again, the last review was in 2010, so maybe they used to be kind of weak. The place is pretty spacious and it's clean. I'm not too fond of the high-wall patio, but hey, they have a patio. The staffers have been very nice to me, and come check on you often enough. As for the food...great! Their chili is delicious and spicy, their frites kick ass, and their mushroom and swiss burger is one of the better burgers I've had in a while. The prices are decent too. I love this pub for it's atmosphere and it's close proximity to my current dwelling. The staff are friendly as well which makes a difference when you go to these places. Prior to the pandemic it was a busy place in the evenings; I used to attend the euchre nights and the occasional gathering of friends. The menu has your usual suspects: nachos, burgers, fish and chips, and a variety of beers on tap although I can't say much for them as I'm not a beer drinker. But I'm quite happy to say that they have Strongbow Cider on tap. I chose to order their Souvlaki for dinner which came with a side of fries and Greek salad. My bf ordered their rib and wings combo, and our friend ordered their Classic Angus burger. Now, our friend has an onion allergy and I commend the server for making an effort to make sure that some of the items he was looking at ordering didn't contain any onions or onion powder. Some places will be difficult about it, but she didn't even bat an eyelash. As for the food itself, I gave it 3 stars instead of 4 because I just wasn't impressed with my dish. The chicken souvlaki was dry and the tzatziki wasn't flavourful. The Greek salad was "meh". I don't typically like vinaigrettes, and this one felt like it was mostly oil even though I made a valiant attempt to mix it. Neither my bf nor our good friend had any complaints about their dishes, but again, they ordered the "usual suspects" when at a pub. I suppose I should've gone with the fish n' chips, which I can say is delicious. I love this bar. Maybe it's the chubby old Italian man who sings magnificent Italian opera songs on Karaoke Fridays, or the creepy guys I used to have crushes on in high school crowding around the pool tables - i love it all! I came here with a bunch of friends a couple weekends ago on a Friday and it was jam packed. Music was SOOOO loud but we were a little close to the stage so that's understandable. I was starving so I had the Canadian angus burger with cheese and a poutine and fried calamari. I loved the calamari even though they maybe tasted a little bit like fried eggs? They were very fresh though and the sauce was yumsicles!!! The burger was good too EXCEPT for the bun...it was too big and too rubbery, i didn't like it at all so I had to pick off the rubber pieces lol. I like that the bar has a bunch of levels, stage being the lowest, then a little balcony-like setting close to the stage, then down again where the bar is and then UP AGAIN (!) to different booths and tables. The patio is HUGE and amazing in the summer, lots of seats and you can smoke, if you want to :) no pressure. I didn't get beer but I do know they have Coors and Rickard's white on tap since my friends got that. If you're not looking to get all decked out and dressy on a Friday night, come here! read more

Been living near this pub for a while but this was my first time there. I didnt have any food but the atmosphere was amazing. The staff there were very attentive. The people (customers) were great! I went on Karaoke Night last Friday. So supportive when everyone went up to sing. Definitely a place i would visit again. You can be yourself there. No one to judge you. Just have fun with your friends. Next time I go back I'll definitely try the food. But based on the people alone, this is a great spot! read more

Went to "Archie's" A few months ago to meet some friends that live in that area. I haven't been since the ownership changed hands and I was shocked and disappointed. The new owner, Wendy, is the new owner/manager and I have never seen such poor customer service in my life ( I have been in the hospitality industry for over 15 years, so, you know this is bad). She berated customers, commented on their alcohol consumption, appearances and even weight?!? The food is awful and over priced and the draught beer is just plain gross. It wouldn't shock me in the least if they used spillage. The servers, as hard working as they are, appeared to be just as disgruntled as the loyal clientele that have been frequenting this place since it's early days. It's a shame that Wendy boasts about her Masters in business when she clearly has no clue. I won't be back. read more

Came for their Wednesday wing night and was not disappointed. The service was on point! Waitress, Samantha, was fast and prompt with our order of wings and beer. She didn't forget the extra dip either which is a huge +1 in my books. The food wasn't too shabby either. The wings were breaded which was a nice surprise. I recommend trying their Hail Caesar sauce. Next time I'll probably get a plate of fries or something along with the wings just cause I'm feeling a bit peckish and it's only been about an hour after my meal. $5 a pound on Wednesdays with a nice cold beer... I will explain why, but otherwise for all intents and purposes this place should be 3 stars, or less. I've been here during karaoke Friday's and poetry nights, those were alright. Karaoke was kick ass fun with the right crowd. Overall a decent neighbourhood pub, decent food, fair prices. No frills kind of place. So why 3 stars? Been coming here for over 20 years on and off and the place has stayed basically the same, few changes to menu or the drinks/beers which is a good thing. For some reason this place reminds me most of the bar from "Cheers" complete with the vintage wooden decor, chairs and tables. Food is your average bar fare which is a nice way of saying it's just adequate! Service is usually warm and friendly even when busy. Bathroom is clean and tidy which is a plus. Archibalds is pretty close to me so I come here relatively often. The bar itself is pretty much a dive, but that's definitely not a bad thing. The food is really good the wings especially. There isn't really too much else, they have a decent selection of beer on tap including Murphy's stout. The prices are reasonable about $7 for a 16 or 20oz pint. This is my local pub as I live only a couple of minutes away, walking distance. The wait staff are outgoing and friendly and are great at making suggestions. The restaurant portion of the venue has a standard and daily menu. The food is surprisingly very good, as you would generally expect bar/pub fare to be exactly that. I'd recommend that you try the O' Canada burger, the Chicken Ciabatta Club, and if you're free on a Wednesday, 1/2 price wings with the purchase of a bevy (hard or soft). There are usually events going on a regular basis, such as Karaoke on Friday nights and Jams on every other Wednesday. The only complaints I'd make are that the carpeting in pretty old and drab, some of the banquette seats are coming off and some of the chairs are pretty rickety, but the customer experience makes up for that. Its cozy and small with good service. The food isnt so hot depends on what it is usually the wings are good. Service is good not long for wait times, they check up on you regularly. I love the booths on the side feels kinda private and cozy with the little steps and railing going up. Does need a renovation though. The crowd isnt so great. I am a frequent customer at Archibald's. Especially every Tuesday when they offer a good portion of pasta for only $8.50. The atmosphere is relaxing and the staff are always very welcoming. The only negative is that the prices on the food regularly are a bit high but not terrible compared to other pubs in Richmond hill. I do suggest trying it out. read more

Yesterday, I telephoned Archibald's and asked if they were serving a traditional Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving. The lady told me that such a meal was being served on Sunday and the Holiday Monday. I thanked her and said I would be there on Thanksgiving to partake. I arrived at 5:30 PM and much to my shock and dismay, the waitress informed me that they had sold out of the Thanksgiving meal the day before. NEEDLESS TO SAY. I was peeved because I had been looking forward to turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing for the past 24 hours. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE for a pub as experienced as Archibald's to fail so badly? When I arrived, there were about 6 other patrons seated and no one else arrived prior to me leaving. No menu was provided by the waitress but she did have a list of about 4 specials jotted down in her notebook, which she read to me. The meal I selected was a $14.000 chicken dish with oversize noodles, tomatoes and green onions. It was far too spicy to my liking and I did not come there to eat Sechuan food. After all, this is a pub that should be serving Canadian fare. I was seated near two Neanderthal's who could not form a single sentence without the word LIKE or some variation of the F-bomb. Other than this overpriced plate of spicy spaghetti, nothing else came with the meal. All in all, it was a miserable experience that left me with zero desire to ever return. Apparently, Archibald's has no clue on how to run a pub. Put the specials down on a daily menu that you can print out on your computer. Not doing so makes you look cheap and incompetent. Had a fantastic time at Archibald's today! We had our Christmas get together there and there were nine in our party. We pre ordered nachos, wings, samosas, spring rolls and two different kinds of pizza. ALL the food was amazing! The pizza was the best I've had in this area for sure! Our server, Kat, was great. The food was brought out and and served buffet style and staged as we had requested. Kat was very attentive and we felt well taken care of. Wendy, who I booked the reservation with, kindly opened up the pool table for us so we played a few games after we ate. Note to Archibald's: you need new cue sticks. All in all we had a great time. Very bad food( burning bread , not freshed salad-looks like already mix few hours, also very small portions like kids meal),bad service (waitress bothering so so much asking order with not friendly she was act like police then take the beer out, foods out even didn't finish yet ), fungus smell inside the pub. My friend and I decided to try the place out as we had driven by it several times. Pros: Buzztime Bar trivia game. Local hangout. Cons: Charging us for every Pop refill and not letting us know that refills were not free. To add salt to that wound, the pop was flat and way too sweet. Something was off. As for the food? We shared the spinach dip for an appetizer. The nachos seemed stale. We had the special tonight: penne bolognese. It was decent at best. Overall, we were not pleased about paying for 5 pops. This turned us off, as our waitress never informed us of this. We thought we had found a place to hangout and enjoy playing Buzztime while eating decent pub fare but that was a deal breaker. read more

Been coming here with the guys after hockey for almost 20 years. It's kind of dated inside as there has been little upgrading over the years. A pretty typical english pub. Place changed hands in the recent past and the quality of the food has really gone down hill. If you are popping by for a beer, the place will suffice. If you are planning on eating, stick to something safe like a burger or the wings - pretty much everything else on the menu is absolutely terrible. We recently ordered a bunch of apps and food for the guys after our l last game of the spring season and sent back most of it cuz the quality was so bad that no one wanted to eat it. We complained to the server who was very apologetic, acknowledging that our food looked pretty bad. But the worst part was that they charged for all the food (even the stuff that was barely touched) . We were told by the server that they are not permitted to discount anything even if the customer complains - new management rules. What you can expect: Pizzas are frozen and not made to order Butter chicken - portion is small and very bland Irish nachos are laden with oil: soggy an inedible Absolutely sat away from the samosas (deep fried and burnt to a crisp), the spring rolls are the cheap ones from discount chinese supermarkets and have almost nothing inside the shells. After so many years coming here it's a shame that we are now looking for a new after game hang out. read more

This place is simply overpriced. The food was fine, but very expensive. Soft drinks are not refilled for free as they are in pretty much every other place in the world. Our group of seven people went for karaoke night on a Friday. When we had a difficult time finding a table, our server indicated "that's why you make a reservation". Not only is this place overpriced, it's pretty uppity for being a complete shithole. I won't be coming back, and will be advising others to stay away as well. read more

Been here twice usually for their sport events. Last time I went, I ordered the Loaded Lattice fries $12.99 for fries is super pricey, The big beef dip $11.99 and the Swiss Mushroom melt burger $12.99. I shared this with my gf and portion was huge. Quality is okay and atmosphere was good for the NFL and UFC fights. Waitress was okay and did come check on his a few times. They do have a outdoor patio as well. Nice small place in Richmond Hill to hang out. But I wouldn't drive all the way around town just to visit it. read more

I really like Archibald's. This is one of the oldest pubs in Richmond Hill and still going strong. Very classy decor. Nice atmosphere with friendly and attentive staff. Food is really good for pub fair, I especially like their grilled calamari and mozzarella sticks. I wouldn't go there for dinner but it's a nice place for a beer and conversation. read more

Good service, good old neighbourhood pub setting BUT the food was horrible - the nachos chips were stale, calamari had a "fishy" smell and the spinach dip looked quite stale too. Decided to leave after that. Hope they prioritize fresh food over the not-so-funny comedy shows. read more
