Archar's Seafood store in Somerset NJ is honestly the most wonderful and freshest seafood you can buy. Mike will help you with choosing fish and guide you on how to cook it! I had an education about the different salmons and how they are farmed and taste. I have gotten crabs cooked for me. This week ai ordered 2 pound lobster and I cooked them exactly as instructed by Mike. Perfect!!!! My 2 plus hour drive each way is always worth it. Next time oysters ( opened and packed up) and salmon. I do not understand why there is not a ten star option for my review? read more

A real traditional fresh seafood market and whose owner Michael is a real true gentleman and expert. Very friendly and most importantly his seafood choices are fresh and high quality. Unlike a bad experience at a local bakery in Summit on Wednesday before Thanksgiving , Michael offered best in quality and consumer experience. My consumer faith has again been restored by Michael. We purchased the local sea scallops and also added wild shrimp which we made with a fantastic spaghetti white wine EVOO garlic and butter sauce. This fresh seafood market is the real deal and well worth the over 20 minute drive. We plan and returning and I strongly recommend that everyone else do the same. Michael is the best ! Such a great personality this guy has . It all started with a simple conversation over the phone . He picked saying Dave ( called from my husband's phone ) what can I do for u buddy but then realized it was a female on the phone . It was so funny from there. I arrived and said I'm Dave and we just rolled with it . He's awesome. We picked up 2 dozen medium crabs and they for sure not disappoint. He made fine selection and we even tried some before we left to Make sure we were good with them . I called that A+ customer service . Now we all know crabs aren't in season all year but they have plenty of other options from different fishes , oysters , clams ,mussels and shrimps . This was my first visit to this seafood market and it was well worth it, I called to check to see what size the crabs were and the cost. The gentleman that I spoke with was very helpful and provided the answer to my questions. I arrived shortly after they opened and I was very impressed with the vibe and the fact it didn't smell like a fish market which means that the seafood is fresh. I purchased a couple dozen crabs at a fair price and they were wonderful and heavy just like the fish monger mentioned. "Where everyone knows your name!" Isn't that where we all want to be, that place where everyone knows your name? Well since Sammy shut done Cheers, let me tell you that place is now Archar Seafood. I've never though of the seafood market as a place where you'd have a few laughs, get some really great service, get to meet a few new friends, and get a few compliments along the way. I mean, this is a seafood market after all! First let's get the facts out of the way. The seafood is frreeeeesh! I had some oysters shucked for my drive home and dammit, that made me happy. These oysters were so crisp, just the right amount of salinity, nicely shucked and did I mention fresh? I also got a thick cut of fresh tuna that I simply peppered and seared that was OUTSTANDING! Mike the owner also gave me some complimentary fresh shrimp that was just delicious broiled with butter and scallions. Mike, if you are reading this, I snapped a picture for you before I ate them to let you know I did you proud with your generosity! This was my first visit and that being the case I took a few extra minutes to survey the offerings. While doing so, there was no shortage of customers, voicing for their offerings and providing great insights. For me, that definitely speaks volumes about how a business is run if random customers will vouch for and speak up for a merchant like so. BTW, I got the hint, next time, definitely getting some crabs! Now having said that, I saw firsthand why other customers were so quick to vouch for Mike and Frank. I've never shook hands with my seafood guy more in less time. This guy Mike is like my new best friend. I've never had so much fun buying seafood before between the playful banter/jokes/stories with random folks and the complimentary nature of Mike. Everyone that walks in is on a first name basis with Mike it seems! If I lived closer, I'd be here every week but I'll definitely be back again! Archar is our 40 yr local seafood store. It's easily located from surrounding towns Piscataway, New Brunswick, Franklin, Somerville to name of a few. The friendly servers always pleased to see you even if it's your first time. They have a variety of seafood readily available with great market pricing. I found this place through the reviews here on Yelp, We went there expecting to try it out for the holiday and found out they do not prepare the fish, but they have a quality product. I can say this because of two reasons: 1st, my cousin a avid fisherman said it was the best flounder he ever had and he hasn't eaten flounder in years 2nd I do not eat fish. I do not like the smell but for the family I offered to cook the flounder and scallops (I made my sister do the crabcakes), I have never handled or cooked fish in my life but everyone said it was fantastic. The scallops were ready for the saute pan when we got them, I cooked the flounder two ways baked and fried and the crabcakes were large and filled with chunks of meat. Mike is certainly the best guy to talk to if you want to complete you menu for a small party, large gathering or a formal party. People were walking out with lobsters, king crab and all sorts of fish. I will say this we will return to see him again; probably in the summer for crabs or lobster, If you want quality fish and service, this is the place for you. read more

Our first time to Archar was last year when we tried their large blue crabs. They were plump, juicy, delicious! We knew we had a winner winner chicken dinner for when we take our yearly road trip up to NJ from Florida. Fast forward to this October when we couldn't wait to go back for more yummy crabs. My husband Darren is a true foodie, and I'm very lucky to have him because he's also a great cook who always looks for fresh ingredients to prepare family meals. He found this place from the trusty yelps and we went on a 30 minutes ride to locate this place. Now, honestly it was not a easy place to find but once you found it and got inside the store... it's Amazing! Fresh fishes, crabs, muscles, clams and made to order lobsters. We arrived when the store just opened. Michael came out greeted us, and was very nice to help us with the order. Soon afterward, a line started forming and he greeted every each one of them. Next day when I picked up our order, they all look incredibly fresh! Michael gave me a bag of ice and helped me to carry them out to my car. 2 days later he called to ensure we have a great family seafood dinner. What a wonderful customer service!! Wanted Maryland Blue Crabs but closer to NYC, found Archar in a search. It was 1 1/2 hours there and back but worth it beyond expectations, what a find. First off Michael is the most natural customer service person you could ever imagine, he is jaw-dropping superlative. The crabs are exceptional, and we will be going back often. TRYING TO CHANGE MY 5 STAR RATING! Ok, this is my second review. My first review was a while back and I've been to archars a few times and this one requires some explaining. I want to change my review to FIFTEEN STARS! First off I live in Arizona and visit northern New Jersey a few times a year. I ALWAYS make a habit to visit Archars seafood. My first 5 Stars is for the store itself. Archars always has an amazing assortment of super fresh fish. My family has been treated to some of the best soft shell crabs and scallops we've ever had and all the different varieties of fresh fish never lets us down. They even carry seasonal items like smoked whiting and other tasty treats. My second 5 Stars is for the owner, Michael himself. He has a way of making everyone feel like the most important customer in the store. He always remembers to ask how my mom is doing and always remembers her by name. I wish every business owner could be like Michael, and that's why he stands out. He's part of the reason it's one of my favorite businesses. The final 5 Stars is for all the employees and customers at the store. All the workers are always so friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. And whenever I'm there, I always strike up a nice conversation with his customers. It's like an extended family where we all meet at our secret place to get our seafood. Michael is an absolutely fantastic business owner. He truly cares about his customers , he even gave me a follow up call a few days later to make sure that our blue crabs were perfect. THEY WERE. As a Marylander born and raised these crabs were as good or better than any I have ever had right off the bay! Archar is for sure my go to spot for all seafood.
