We booked our travel with Gate 1 Travel, a company we have been on multiple tours with and I can't say enough good things about them except their recommendation for travel insurance with Arch and to say we are disappointed is an understatement. These are a bunch of scammers in my book, and I will never again buy their trip insurance. We went to Mexico City a couple of days early to meet some friends, and then to continue on our tour , which started there. We would have had to have been there the day before or that day the tour started anyway, which was March 10, 2020. Since we were already in Mexico, we did not find out about the travel recommendation of the federal government until two hours before the tour was to begin, when we were notified by Gate 1 that the tour was cancelled on the recommendation the day before the tour of the federal government against international travel and because many guests had cancelled. Of course we took the first plane back to Miami. We were thinking that we are out the expenses of our flights there and our return flights, but we have "CAFR", cancel for any reason travel insurance, so we are okay, right?
WRONG! We submitted our claims for the two flights. They denied the claim for both flights saying that the "trip interruption must be due to:
1) "Your, A Family Member's, a Traveling Companion's or a Business Partner's or Traveling Companion's Family Member's death, which occurs while You are on Your trip.
2) "or (the same people as stated above) has a covered Sickness or Injury: a)while You are on your trip, b) requires medical treatment at the time of interruption, c) as certified by a physician, d) results in medical restrictions so disabling as to prevent Your continued participation on the Trip."
3) or for other covered events and the policy lists:
among them, "Political or Security Evacuation", but in this case "only if Our Program Assistance Provider arranges or coordinates Your evacuation. Then it goes into how they are not responsible for costs under various conditions that this provider is or is not responsible for.
First of all, we did not carry our policy with us so we did not have it there to see all of the fine print about any service provider. How many people would do that? We assumed that whatever was happening we would have adequate time to file our claim and it never occurred there would be all of this "fine print" on a "CFAR" policy.
What is covered under Political or Security Evacuation, which includes "natural disaster" The WHO, World Health Organization definition is:
"an act of nature of such magnitude as to create a catastrophic situation in which the day to day patterns of life are suddenly disrupted and people are plunged into helplessness and suffering, and, as a result, need food, clothing, shelter, medical and nursing care and other necessities of life, and protection against unfavorable environmental factors and conditions."
That describes our situation at that time. Now, under those conditions would you search for your policy to make sure you are covered or would you pick up the phone and get the first plane out and read it later? Not only is such a exclusion and stipulation about calling their "Provider" absurd beyond belief, it can only be construed as a way of getting out of paying claims. If you tried making a phone call or getting a flight out at the time, March 10, 2020, with the wait time on the phone and getting service was lengthy to put it mildly.
I will never, ever use Arch again, and if Gate 1 continues to use them, I will book my travel through someone else. That would be sad, because our best trip ever (trip to Africa) was with Gate1 and we travel 6-8 weeks out of every year. read more
