White Lotus Farms Cafe - Customer favorite, the breakfast sandwich in its criox like glory

The experience itself is bright and pleasant, with an open atrium to the upstairs dining area. But don't get too comfy. No laptops allowed here. Doesn't look like there's WiFi either. The food was farmers market fresh. Lots of fresh amazing pastries if you come early. Not sure if they sell out--kind of low key at least compared to the university scene. One specialty is the breakfast sandwich. Basically a croissant looking roll sliced and toasted, filled with breakfast stuff. No wonder it's a favorite. We also had omelets. Simple cheese with buttered French bread toast. VERY GOOD. I also got a side of sausage with cheese on it for a protein boost. The other side of the store had rolls of fresh bread. Also lots of local honey products. New product we had to try was the honey granuals. I'll let you know how it tastes.

This is a review for the White Lotus cafe on Zeeb road (not the farms on Liberty)…read more This place is now my go-to for West Side hang-out. Anytime I have a family member visit me we go here. (I'm thinking of holding my office hours here in the fall, IN PERSON, over real coffee! this coffee is yummmmmmmy) From the moment I walk in the door I am greeted with friendly, knowledgeable staff. Who all know me by my first name! (and I have a difficult Spanish name). They greet me with a smile, never rush me, and take my order all the while answering any questions I might have. Since their menu is always evolving and changing, it's great that they take the time to walk through my options. So they have their standard amazing pizzas (which i first had at the farm) and their shockingly authentic pastries (even better croissants than I have had in Paris). But last week I tried their new breakfast food, and MAN! It was GOOD! the quiche, the omelet....and although I am convinced their chai is the best in Ann Arbor (it's not a premade mix of sugar and chemicals, it's the real deal) ...they now have this new line of matcha, so so good. Sarah and Kat make baristas run for cover, they are that good. And even with all that goodness, I was SHOCKED out of my mind when I had their eggplant sandwich. That thing is fire. FIRE. My family and I are big meat eaters, so when this one hit the scene, we couldn't believe how tasty it was. Even writing this review right now makes me want to go there and eat one. (I'll still keep trying their amazing ever-new menu, but this eggplant sandwich has become a standard) Also, there is this very cute small little market attached where I stop by at the end of the day to pick up freshly made bread for dinner. We love the sesame bread, but geez louise, the baguettes are addictive. Their head baker is INSANELY talented. Remember that scene in Ratatouille when the food critic gets transported to a core memory? That happens to me when I eat that bread. I have purchased goat milk soap there (its handmade by the baker's wife), hot chocolate mix, a kabocha squash, this no sugar added mango puree (which I made a no-sugar added mango torte with). They have these really cool unique products, and it really is a treat to stop by. The place is beautiful, and it is a gem to have such a high quality place to eat on this side of town. The passion that these people have comes through in their food, the products they sell, and the way they treat their community. I love Ann Arbor, and I love this cafe. (okay now i really am going to go and get that eggplant sandwich)

We were greeted by a smiling, friendly lady who went out of her way to answer questions and then suggested something for us that wasn't listed. A special that included bread, salad and the pot pie! There is inside seating if you'd like. But we got ours to go. The only hard part is making up your mind what you want to eat! The crust was flaky and very flavorful. The pie filling was not too sweet and the fruit flavor shined through. The savory chicken pot pie was seasoned well and delicious. Another nice thing was they offer pies in a smaller size as well as a traditional one. Go for traditional! You will want all of it!

The spot was pretty empty - it's very large, and we had the pleasure of a lady playing the harp. (It's unclear if she was paid entertainment or just practicing?) The older kids had kids meals, which included chips, a sandwich, and a drink. They were big fans. My wife and I shared some fantastic potato soup and a very good cinnamon roll (we have had one in the past - fluffy and not overly iced - feels not terrible unhealthy?) Additionally, she chose a slice of peanut butter chocolate cream pie and I the cherry crumb. Both were amazing - maybe hers slightly better (obviously very different). Oh, and we shared a coffee! Solid for a caraffe situation. (pie and coffee unpictured) Strongly recommend!

I mean, how can you not love a place that's got the Danny DeVito seal of approval?) I've since dialed it in and my new usual is the Jersey Shore Favorite with some added banana peppers and mayo. A bag of chips on the side and it's more than enough for full meal if you're starving or two meals if you're just feeling a bit peckish. Also, their chocolate chip cookies are a nice add on for a lil' treat later in the day. The staff here is quite friendly and they're always hustling to get folks through the line as quickly as possible, though they do stay pretty regularly busy. It seems no matter what time I come by I have to go through some sort of line. I tend to place my order online for pick up so I guess my only real quibble is that they've don't have a pick up area accessible to guests. So every time I come in to pick up an order I have to wait in a line to ask for it. It ruins their flow, too. It would be awesome if they just had a table or shelf dedicated to that so we could just literally grab and go. But I suppose there's some protection to the orders if you have to ask the staff. Pros and cons, I guess! But it would be nice to have a more streamlined option. Otherwise, keep up the good work JM!

Came back to the store, told the owner that the sandwich was made with too much oil and vinegar. As a mocking comment he offered more vinegar. We Left. Then we called back, talked to manager named Alex, asked why there wasn't a resolution given about the soggy sandwich, he said it depends on the circumstance. Said disclaimers are given that the oil and vinegar will make the sandwich more juicy, to every one. I told him, no disclaimer was given, because there wasn't one when ordering the sandwich. But the sandwich should have been offered to be remade the first time we went in. Also, the juiciness wasn't the problem, it's the fact that how much oil and vinegar they put on the sandwich completely altered the taste of the sandwich. It literally shouldn't had been that much, felt like so much spite. This was such a horrible thing to experience and they were super petty/unprofessional on how they went about it.
