I was craving tacos, and though it didn't look very busy, I'm so glad I stopped. I started with a mixed ceviche tostada for $7.50, which was enormous--honestly, it could've been a full meal on its own. I also ordered Carne Asada and El Pastor tacos, each only $2.89. Even though I probably overdid it, every bite was fantastic, from the perfectly cooked meats to the flavorful sauces. After I ordered, I noticed a steady stream of people picking up food--it seems I stumbled upon a hidden gem in the food truck world. If you love authentic Mexican flavors, this place is a must-try!

We decided to try Peruvian Flavors downtown as it sounded tasty and was open until 9pm. The location was not easy to find as the restaurant's name was written under the window pediment, so we drove right by the building and parking lot the first time. Once we found it, we were the only patrons there, so we got our pick of seats and had great service by the lady running everything. The interior had basic tables and chairs for dining, but the decor had a lot of flair and charm that really resonated the spirit of Peru. There were a few display cases adorned with jewelry, postcards and other knickknacks. The walls were anything but empty. For our meals, I ordered the Lomito Saltado with chicken, and my son got the same thing with beef. Both plates came out in about 5mins and had hot French fries and fresh grilled onions and meat. These plates didn't stand a chance as we were hungry from 8+hrs of driving. We passed on dessert and drinks (drink options were bottles/cans in a fridge as there was no beverage fountain). Thanks Peruvian Flavors for fueling us up during our road trip!

The fries were cold and had a strange chemical aftertaste. I also don't like sour cream, crema, cottage cheese, or anything similar, so before ordering I specifically asked whether the red cream sauce was made with heavy cream or crema. I was told it was heavy cream, but after one bite it tasted distinctly sour to me. The service itself was pleasant, and we never complained about the incorrect order. That said, when a customer takes only one bite of their meal and declines a to-go box, it seems reasonable for someone to ask if everything was okay.

From there, it gets worse. There was an ample amount of cheese, however, there was no pico de gallo, cream or guac. I thought that there might have been a communication error, or maybe their Cali burrito isn't what I had come to expect. So, I decided to try their sister restaurant off of Brigham to make sure. Here I got pretty much the same thing except this time it had pico & crema. Still disappointing. When I think back about the place on Convention, I have to say I was also a little bothered about their kitchen practices. I saw the girl in the front of house and the cook eating while working. As for some better alternatives with a proper Cali burrito (in no particular order): - Monchis on River - Tacos Plaza on River - Aimars on Main As for Las Palmas, I can say that the rolled tacos are good. Also, I will be going back to try other menu options, like the carne asada fries and the bean and cheese burro. Let's hope that these other items sing.

Fast forward to last night, and again staying in a nearby hotel and went to Las Palmas. It's nothing to look at...just a food stand in a gas station. But the lady who took our order was friendly and nice and helpful. Wife ordered a quesadilla with shredded chicken. I got a carne asada burrito with rice and guacamole. They also have a salsa bar...I got the salsa verde and some of the spicy jalapeños, carrots, and onions. Everything tasted great. Lots of carne asada and guacamole in the burrito. The salsa was perfect, and my wife also enjoyed hers. Neither of us could finish. Total cost with a large drink was $26. Overall great value and very good food.
