I've watched them unnecessarily refer people to cardiologists and require that you come back to them for blood tests instead of going to an independent lab so that they can collect a copay for the blood draw. They ignore emails and phone calls with regard to filling out necessary forms and are only interested in the almighty dollar. They have the nerve to ask me to write a review after agreeing to waive a no-show fee after an appointment that was legitimately canceled on their portal. Complete with a cancellation confirmation. Andrea was one of the first people I called when I found out I was pregnant with baby #2 and #3. I took her class when I was pregnant with my first born, and I wanted to have the same experience while pregnant with my twins. Her class gave me strength and stamina to carry the twins to the full term, it definitely helped me with delivery and then speedy recovery. During my first trimester back in February I reached out to Aqua Mom knowing that I wanted to start classes in the beginning of my second trimester. While it took some time to get a response, I finally did. I has asked for classes beginning sometime in April. I was sent some generic information. As April approached I reached out again to confirm when I can begin, it took three emails to get a response. I was told there was not an immediate spot but that there were 4 people who were close to their due dates and that I could also go on the wait list. So I said ok keep me posted. I was then told to mark my calendar for May 22nd and definitely by June 5th. I said great, I could either. I waited and didn't hear anything about May 22nd, so I emailed on May 23rd saying I assume since May 22nd has passed I am in for June 5th, and that is where the communication stopped. I never heard back again, so I gave up. You would think with with 3 months notice I would have been able to secure a space. I was really looking forward to this being part of my workout routine but that's not happening. It was really disappointing. You must have to know someone working there or be part of some elite posse of people to get a class, because I can't for the life of me figure out why I couldn't get one. When I was pregnant with our first child, I found the Aquamom postcard at my OB/GYN office. I immediately went online to do some research and to find out how effective of a program this would be and whether it is certified and accredited. Once I read the information and consulted with a few friends who swam during pregnancy, I didn't hesitate to email Aquamom and request availability. Right away I was impressed with the promptness of response and the level of detailed information about the program I was provided. Additionally, I was requested to submit a clearance form from my doctor that it was safe for me to exercise, which I felt was very responsible of them. I was provided several options for classes with availability and ultimately, selected the Thursday's evening downtown class. Although, I did take a few midday classes at the Midtown West location, which were also very good. From my first class to the last, I couldn't have been happier with the routines and the results. I grew stronger with each class and the water helped alleviate the severe swelling and water retention I experienced with my first pregnancy. Additionally, my hip and back issues that come with pregnancy were also relieved significantly. My prenatal physical therapist even noticed the results. I cannot commend Andrea enough on her patience and attentiveness to all Aquamoms taking her class. I took this class until week 38 and would've taken it week 39 and 40, but schedule wouldn't allow. I am now taking Aquamom during my second pregnancy. I enjoyed my first experience so much that I started earlier into my pregnancy this time around. Whether this is your first pregnancy or your 10th pregnancy, I cannot recommend Aquamom enough to all of you because for me the breathing and visualizations went out the window once I was 6cm dilated, but the thing that remained was my stamina and my energy to continue pushing once I was 10cm and fully effaced for over 3 hours to deliver my 8lb 4oz healthy baby boy naturally. If it wasn't for Andrea and her classes, I probably would've ended up with a C-section for sure. I can understand some of the negative reviews from women who were disappointed due to scheduling and availability issues, but I can honestly say that any reviews that comment on the value or lack there of about Aquamom to pregnant women, either didn't take the class or have ulterior motives. These classes are not just exercise, they are water therapy so if you're suffering from muscle or joint or tendon pain, your doctor would recommend a low impact exercise routine, which is just what Aquamom is all about. It's not possible to injure yourself in these classes unless you dive into the pool and hit your head - NOT that I am recommending or endorsing you do that in any shallow pool. All positive and negative reviews aside, you won't know how great of a program Aquamom is until you take a class and see for yourself what it's all about, which, if you're pregnant, I would behoove you to do! I am completely confident that you will not only enjoy it, but like most of us will come back for your subsequent pregnancies and pay double just to go twice a week. read more

I am a huge Aquamoms fan. Yes it was difficult to get into the class from the start, but it was worth the wait. Clearly the operation is bigger than the support staff to monitor enrollment. All is forgiven once you get in. Andrea is fantastic at paying attention to the individual needs of expectant mommas, along with not letting you slack off if you are already in good shape. The range of fitness levels and due dates this class is able to accommodate is wonderful. I used to get regular massage, but found that just getting in the pool and going through the routines did so much more to relieve the stress and tension in my spine/hips/ribs from pregnancy. The pools are more than adequate, I think they have to be viewed in the context of-it's NYC, where do you think you are going to get a (mostly private) olympic sized pool to play in? They are clean, generally warm and the support staff have always been accommodating. I especially appreciate having been able to come a bit early or stay a bit late in the water to do my own thing at the midtown location. read more

I contacted Aquamom when my wife was pregnant with our first child. They responded very quickly and even went as far as calling my wife and discussing her expectations (which were high). My wife is very picky because she used to be a professional athlete and won't work out with just any personal trainer. My wife spoke to them for over 45 minutes and they were very patient and informative. She started taking the group class and switched to private twice a week because she was so pleased with the class and the instructor, Andrea (ask to take her class). She also trained with her after the baby and when she was pregnant with our second baby. We both highly recommend the class and the private sessions! read more

Due any day now, I'm very sad my Aquamom classes have come to an end. For me this was an extremely positive experience, especially in my 3rd trimester where it was difficult to do much else. Being in the water felt great, helped with my swelling, and provided me with a good high energy pre-natal exercise option. I am not a strong swimmer, but was able to do the class just fine. Floats and kick boards are provided. Andrea cares about all of her students and has plenty of good advise to give, besides running a terrific class. I did have to wait a few months to get in. The classes are small, they need to be. So, you may have to wait until someone else leaves. Keep trying though if you'd like to get in; it's worth it. As for the pools that I've seen complaints about... if you are looking to swim laps at the Ritz, yes, you will be disappointed. But for most people, the pool was large and clean, the facilities were good enough. I would recommend this to anyone. read more

I can't say enough great things about Andrea and Aquamom. Attending Aquamom classes every week was the best decision I made during my pregnancy. I was pregnant during the Summer so on hot days I really looked forward to class and being in the pool. It kept me moving and motivated, it helped with blood circulation (no swelling in my feet throughout my 3rd tri.), it helped with sleep, it helped alleviate back pressure. It felt great to be able to feel weightless when my belly got so heavy. It was also fun being around other pregnant women and sharing knowledge and experiences. I highly recommended Aquamom!! I took this class from 30 weeks pregnant until 38 weeks pregnant and it was outstanding. Andrea was extremely knowledgeable and encouraging as the teacher. Let me start by saying I have no feedback on the classes themselves since I haven't even gotten that far although I wanted to. This review is for Aquamom to look at its staff who answers the phone, I believe her name starts with a K, and how she runs the operation in a rude and pretentious with holier than thou attitude. After signing up online, I received an email with available spots, I called and had a conversation with her upon which it was decided that I'll sign up for the UES location for Tuesday. This phone chat was somewhat amicable and I asked whether I'd be receiving any email with information on what I need for the class. She told me it'll be send end of the day. This was Thursday. I received nothing, Friday, Saturday nor Sunday. Come Monday afternoon, I called to double check, same woman told me it'll be send out soon. Again, nothing until end of the day when I phoned her one more time and again the run around, i.e. you'll get it. On Tuesday, the day of my class, I receive an email at 5:30 am with a doctor's consent form attached to it along with general instructions. Here is the climax, I called at 11 30 am to cancel since I didn't not feel comfortable with attending unless I speak with my doc, granted that it's stated in the email that you don't need it for the first class, but why go and not exercise? What's the first class about if the consent form isn't needed? This woman was not only rude, but also presumptuous that she threw me off with what she was saying when I told her that I don't feel comfortable unless I speak with my doctor. The tirade of scolding started with her telling me that I should have called earlier since she cancelled on two potential customers because of me. Well, maybe if you had sent it 3 days ago and not as what seemed as an ad hoc move made last minute. Then, she said the doctor's consent is a "courtesy" and would I have had the same attitude had they not sent it?! I said probably not, but it got me thinking since I'm high risk. How she responded to that is what offended me the most. According it her "all our customers are high risk and we started as high risk program" and continued mentioning a woman with triplets, another from Colorado, etc. And how they even went to flywheel. What? I don't care about any or all other pregnancies since everyone's unique, but for her to don on a doctor's robe and decide for me was the most offensive encounter I had as a pregnant woman. I got questions for the establishment, why send this form if it's unimportant? And what does courtesy mean? Is the person handling the phones an od/gyn? Midwife? Even if she is, she isn't mine to volunteer her unsolicited opinions. Are you willing to take responsibility for any unfortunate incidents resulting from women attending without their doctors' ok? Are you sure you know what high risk pregnancy is? It's much more than multiples... Lastly, she abruptly ended the call because "she had to call those customers" Aquamom, I'm sorry you have this individual as your representative. Setting a list-serve to forward a generic email with a few modifications is a task easily performed by a college freshman ( and yes, I know, I'm a uni professor). Lastly, train this individual to be more courteous when addressing clientele. You don't say "who is this?" While inquering who the caller might be, one says "who am I speaking with? " unless I'm calling you on your cellphone and you didn't have a good night sleep. Customer service is a sad failure! Yesterday was my second class and I was hooked last week. Andrea has been nothing but kind to me and is insanely patient. She wants us all to have an amazing pregnancy, be safe, and enjoy ourselves in class. The workouts are difficult enough to work every inch of your body yet calming enough to induce a great sleep! I have to go to bat for the Aqua Mom team here. I attended the class in late 2008, when pregnant with my now 3 yr old aqua baby. This class was fabulous and just what I needed. Not only was Andrea full of energy and enthusiasm, but she pushed us to actually work out (hard!). I would definitely feel it after the work outs and enjoyed meeting the other mommies to be. I also slept much better from being so tired, which was great. This class really became worth it's money in the labor and delivery room. My doctor said she would have anticipated a c-section with a sun side up baby boy, cord around the neck and 3.5 hours of pushing, but I did it with no c-section! The doctor was totally impressed and so was I. She said I must have ben super active during pregnancy to pull that one off. I WAS, IT WAS AQUA MOM! If you don't like the pool in general, you won't like Aqua mom. But if you love swimming and find the pool relaxing this is for you! Best, Lauren read more

I really doubt those 5 star comments. I participated in this program when I was 22nd weeks. I'm a beginner for swimming but Andrea requires you to do as intense as the regular swimmers. I sprained my leg during the swimming class. I couldn't go to work, even standing up. I have to see an orthopedist and a therapist for recovery and I send the documents to them. They never mention to refund the rest of the classes due to their fault--not instructed appropriately. I personally think that it doesn't worth the money to do that. You could join a membership in some gyms for swimming and get more out of it. You don't have to take my advice. Go ahead and I'm pretty sure most of you will regret. read more

Dear all, I cannot believe what I am reading from these other reviews. Aqua Mom was the best thing about my pregnancy. I absolutely loved it. The pool was warm and the workout was challenging. We did lots of different excercises and lots and lots of swimming. I also went to the classes after I gave birth as they were great for a post natal work out as well, and I missed the instructor as she is so lovely. I am currently in my second pregnancy and living in the UK and the thing I miss most is Aqua Mom. I have tried different classes and nothing compares. They are ok to be in the water for a bit, but they are not challenging in the slightest. The best instructor and class I have ever had, by a mile, was Aqua Mom. I would recommend it to anyone that is pregnant from as early as week 18 and also as a post natal excercise class. read more

I took Aquamom classes during my pregnancy, and it was the most amazing thing that happened to me. Not only did it help me physically and I now have two gorgeous perfect little twin daughters, but Andrea was so incredibly helpful with sharing a wealth of information. oh my god, i would have probably never taken this class if i read about it on yelp first. what a mistake that would have been! harrowing to think i could have missed out on aquamom for this twin pregnancy. i smell a rat here. i am one discerning customer and aquamom is the BEST THING THAT I COULD HAVE DONE FOR MY PREGNANCY. and that's not just me. everyone in her class is a happy camper. she is the most attentive, caring, watchful, diligent instructor you could possibly imagine and she has improved the lives of hundreds of women in nyc. everyone i've met - and i went to classes on the upper east side as well as down on wall street - is eager to come to class every week. it's more like an aqua therapy spa hour than a workout. you don't even realize that you're doing so much good for your body. i'm 35 weeks pregnant with twins and my only two trips out of the house at this point is to aquamom and my weekly doctor visit. it's the only time i'm weightless and have any relief from the pressure of two babies. my circulation, my breathing, my flexibility are all drastically improved by taking this class. i am NOT an athlete. i repeat, i am NOT an athlete and i'm lazy as hell about getting myself to a gym. i love yoga and i miss it so much but i didn't feel like yoga was right for me during pregnancy. swimming is the SAFEST thing you could possibly do. to the woman who sprained her ankle, i have to extend a HUGE eye roll. your ankle? come on. that is just a hapless accident caused by you. you must have dragged your foot on the bottom of the pool or somesuch. how on earth would that be the teacher's fault? the exercises in the pool are aided by wonderful props and tools and people go at their OWN pace, some just idling back when they aren't feeling so hot. even as a non-athlete, i never found a single minute of my time in the pool arduous or putting ANY STRAIN ON ANY PART OF MY BODY but often you'll see women stop and rest and that is just fine with everyone. there is NO pressure. NO whistles. NO yelling. NO snobbery. it is TOTALLY down to earth. the reason the classes are small is because she gives individual attention and doesn't overcrowd the pool. and she only picks pools that are heated to something like 85 degrees, warmer than a usual swimmers pool, which is so cozy and comfortable for a pregnant woman. and the pools are shallow. you can stand almost in any part of the pool. you don't have to be a swimmer to do this. at all. i've seen complete non-athletes, even an obese woman in her class. no one cares. i can not say ENOUGH good things about this class and how great it is for all pregnant women. there is nothing snooty or pushy or harmful about this class. my husband sees the difference every time i get out of class and he's told all his male friends with pregnant wives they have to get their wives to go. another thing about the instructor, she keeps up with everyone's pregnancy and cares deeply about how they are feeling. she is so dedicated and passionate about this. she's been doing it for ELEVEN YEARS. she knows everybody and can hook you up with all kinds of help - whatever you need. She's a great person to have on your side. A great ally in your pregnancy. Everyone loves her and jokes around with her and tells her their stories and concerns. i know that andrea is working on her website which does need more info and an easier way to sign up for a waiting list but this is really just a hiccup in an otherwise ideal exercise program. read more

WHAT IT IS: + A weekly one hour class for 8 weeks. + Women generally start around week 20 and re-enroll through their pregnancy. Once you are in, Andrea gives you the option to renew without losing your place. You should contact her in advance of when you hope to start, so she can start balancing and communicating when current moms have due dates and spots will open up. + Every class is different, but the structure is generally: modified lap swimming with special swim gear (kickboards, noodles, water dumbbells, etc.) followed by hydro-pilates/water aerobics with special floating gear. + While it is a guided class, she has crafted it in a way that you can swim at your own pace based on your skill level and trimester. + Class size varies, but it seems to be about 7-8 people on average. + Aquamom offers classes downtown, midtown and uptown and midday and nighttime to help accommodate folks. Once you are in a class, you stay in that time and location. (That said, you can make up a class during the week if you miss yours due to travel, etc.) WHY IT'S AWESOME: You read these gushing reviews about Aquamom and it is hard to believe. But when you are an uncomfortable and nervous new mom, it's hard not to get emotional about Aquamom. Anything that makes you sleep better, get stronger for delivery, help recover faster and feel good. Plus the peace of mind of an endorsement from your OBGYN (you need it to enroll), a posse of women sharing your experience and a caring trainer. I can't say enough good things about Aquamom. Andrea is a gift to New York City moms. She has a natural instinct as well as keeps up-to-date on training techniques to help strengthen moms-to-be both physically and mentally. Plus to bring out the joy and have fun. Yes, I used the word fun to describe pregnancy exercise. Crazy. This is not a big institutional program or franchise. It is a single, caring woman. She has added classes to meet the demand, but it is just Andrea. She personally teaches all of the classes and manages the mass outreach of what is a very in-demand program. The classes are thoughtfully priced when you consider access to a pool without joining a gym, small class size, jam-packed hour, swimming equipment and her expertise. Pregnant women are like snowflakes: they look the same from a far, but are very different, delicate and intricate when you get closer. Ask ten different pregnant women and get ten different answers. But universally, Aquamoms are fanatical about her class and what each of them get out of it. Some for the endorphins. Some purely to float with the weightlessness. Some for the chit-chat. Everyone feels like they are doing something for themselves and their babies. I think Aquamom tends to attract a certain type of mom-to-be: work hard, play hard and even on the toughest days of pregnancy just to show up. Aquamom is a perfect complement to prenatal yoga and walking. There are stories of Aquamoms delivering faster, recovering sooner and other positive benefits to pregnancy. This is probably the first time I have given something 5 stars. After looking for a few pre-natal classes I came across Aquamom and read good reviews. The timing was right for me, I was able to get a spot soon. I was a bit lazy during my second trimester but as the weeks started creeping up on me, I realized that I need to do pre-natal stuff for smooth delivery. So I signed up for Aquamom when I was 26 weeks, and started at 28 weeks. When I went to their downtown location the first time, I was a tad disappointed with the facilities because the class is conducted in a school, and the showers and locker rooms were not gym-quality. There was also water everywhere. So I wasn't sure if this class was all that. But once I got into the pool, I was sold. I thought pre-natal classes are very easy, not really. Andrea really makes you work out well, its fun, using lots of props. I am planning to go twice a week. I really look forward to these classes. I feel so relaxed after, and it helps sleep better. Women in all trimesters attend. I saw one who was 37 weeks along and had been going twice a week. I just wish there were more classes in more locations, Downtown is too far for me, I wish the Midtown classes were during evenings as well. But all in all I truly enjoy these classes and highly recommend them especially if you can no longer do regular exercises. I can see women take this in any trimester once the doctor okays it. This is the greatest class ever, and has totally transformed my experience being pregnant. 1) It feels SO good to be in the water when pregnant and leads to a huge reduction in my swelling. 2) The instructor Andrea is SO knowledgable on all things fitness, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Not only is she a caring and safe instructor of the class, but she shares so much information, if you are interested, about this new phase of life. She also has an extremely inspirational fitness history -- I think it is important in preg to surround yourself with strong, inspirational people, and she fits the bill if not the poster child for this! 3) Great community! It's so grounding to meet other women who are pregnant and also value fitness. Some of the women have given birth before, and are great resources. I have made a friend in the class who I now see outside of Aquamoms and we will likely meet up once we have our babies. It's amazing to meet other pregnant women who care about staying active and feeling good, instead of being around sedentary complainers 4) Amazing workout. And contrary to the negative reviews, completely safe. Andrea has a long a conversation with you about your exercise routine and fitness history before you join the class, and you can swim and move as fast or as slow as you need in the class. There is far, far more guidance and freedom in this class than I've experienced in other group fitness environments -- prenatal or not. Regarding some of the other negative comments -- I'm not sure which location led someone to complain about "gross locker rooms", but let's get real -- it's NYC and locker rooms aren't always going to be spa-esque. I haven't delivered yet, so, I don't know how the training may or may not benefit my labor, but I am a current member of AquaMoms. I was always an avid swimmer but I haven't formally trained since high school--about 16 years ago, yikes! I love the drills we do in the class, it's a great workout but somehow it's also relaxing. Andrea is the best: she's motivating, she has great stories and she is knows how to work with moms of varying swimming skill level in the same class. I would wholeheartedly recommend this class to any soon-to-be moms who enjoy swimming and can sustain an hour plus of pool time. I go to the downtown location and I find it to be a nice pool, with pretty decent locker room/shower facilities and a friendly staff. It feels quite private during the sessions, which allows for the preggo ladies to let lose and have a little fun without feeling shy! I'm sorry to hear other people had trouble getting into the class because once you start it's so great and pretty laid back. I guess it's just always in high demand because it's the only class of it's kind I could find in the city. read more

I LOVE water sports and now, after visiting this place I love them even more. I was afraid to exercise but then I found an ad for Aquamom and I decided to try their 8-week program. It feels amazing. I'm less nervous and I'm happy to meet and talk to other future moms. I felt really comfortable and happy during the classes. The pool is big enough and is kept nice and clean. I had a quick recovery after my pregnancy thanks to this place. I'm truly happy when I'm in the pool and I miss going to Aquamom now. read more

over-rated. this class is in a tiny pool, with a lot of people in it (that aren't even in the class) & disgusting locker rooms. the workout is ok, but prenatal water aerobics at the Y & JCC on the upper west side are better. read more

AQUAMOM IS THE BEST PRE-NATAL WORKOUT HANDS-DOWN. I cannot say enough great things about it - I did the class once a week (sometimes twice) from 12 weeks on for both of my pregnancies. About me: I'm not a great swimmer, but I wanted to stay fit during the pregnancy and work the right muscles to help facilitate a good delivery and better post-delivery body. I used to do yoga about once a week, and initially supplemented Aquamom with a pre-natal yoga class (although it's not really necessary, since Aquamom is such a great workout; at the end of the day, I would choose an Aquamom class over pre-natal yoga). Aquamom lasts about an hour and a half, Andrea is a terrific teacher/coach, there's always a lifeguard in the room, the athleticism completely varies per class (so there's no weird "competition"), and for me it was also my mental salvation during the week. It was the one time of week i could just focus on myself in the relaxing, warm environment, talk with other moms-to-be, and actually feel and see results (my husband actually said that my arms looked "great" during that!) AND - i had very quick deliveries with both of my 8 plus pound boys! I think it helped both with pushing and my endurance. Anyway, really, I can't recommend this enough (three of my friends have since enlisted) and am hoping that Andrea starts a post-natal class soon! read more

I travel all over the country and all over the world. And after having really bad experience with other pre-natal exercise services I decided to try Aqua Mom. The program is fantastic! Unlike other places the instructor keeps a fully certified lifeguard on board, so that's really safe. Plus, the exercise program is a safe workout that keeps the body fit while clears the clutters of the mind. Class size is small and limited and so, if you are not serious about it, you won't get in. But she always makes an effort and has a waiting list to accommodate people. I especially like how her assistant Carter takes care of all questions and even calls back after hours if something really matters to you. What other company does that? A word of caution: this is not for the lazy people. You have to be on top of your schedule and know early enough if you want to take the class since its popular demand makes it full always. She really makes you feel welcome, and stays back to answer every question you have. It's the best prenatal gift you can give yourself and your expected child. Seriously, don't be lazy about figuring out when you want to join. Otherwise, you might not get in the program. Would love to meet Carter someday! He is such a sweet guy and really takes time to answer every question on the phone. read more
