MEDIOCRE OYSTERS THAT CAN BE SHUCKED BETTER? Local market, seafood store, fresh oysters on display... that's the formula to have some high quality oyster at a reasonable price, right? Well... NOT this time...... :( We ordered one dozen of oysters for $32 (i.e. not cheap). So-so size and freshness (i.e. not justifying the price point), but the thing that turned me off was that the oysters were shucked fairly poorly. You can probably tell from the picture below that there were many bits and pieces of shells inside. The overall market is great, but I'll certainly try oysters at another store next time. read more

The best way to sum this place up is "okay." Food ( 6/10 ) - Their food was decent but not great. We ate the lobster and shrimp rolls. The seafood was definitely fresh and the sauce was super creamy. The bread was also nice and buttered. However, it was hard to taste the lobster because almost half the filling was celery. Same thing applied for the shrimp, albeit with less celery. However, it was noticeable that less love was put into the shrimp roll. The bread was falling apart and it wasn't filled fully like the lobster roll was. Service ( 7/10 ) - The service was also average. The girl in front who took our order was super nice and definitely saved this service score. What drags this down was definitely the chef. The chef gave away our food to other customers because we weren't immediately ready to pick it up. My mom had the receipt and had briefly walked away to explore the market. When she came back, they had said the order was given away. She hastily remade the sandwich but when she gave me the sandwich, it was with her dirty gloves which had definitely been used on raw seafood; something I found to be quite unsanitary. Overall, small touch-ups to service and food would make this place a definitely hit but unfortunately was not great on this experience. read more

These may be some of the best oysters I've had in Montreal! I had a dozen of oysters (assortment of mainly from PEI, some from Maine and my favourite - the Irish oysters!!!) the service is great, the guy at the poissonnerie was very thorough and I loved the two different types of house made mignonette. I also had the scallop ceviche with smoked pineapple which was really nice. Price came to be about $54 for the oysters and the scallop. I also bought salmon from here to make salmon tartare and the fish was very fresh! It was a bit pricier than other poissonneries I've been to but I had a great experience here overall and the tartare I made later in the evening was a hit! read more

Great selections of fresh fish and other seafood makes Poissonnerie Aqua Mare a winner at Marche Jean Talon. When the market is busy, there is also a hot table where you can get some cooked food: soup, sandwiches etc and enjoy a light snack at the tables in the front of the store. I love this place, not only because the quality of the product here, but also the staff members. The Boite aux Huitres across the aisle is their brain-child, so when we were cruisin' by and noticed they were closed, we were disappointed; but then I found out that you can get any oysters you want shucked for you at the store. The gentleman who works the counter at Boite was there, and he even taught me to shuck them myself! Yep - so I can buy them and DIY at home, saving about 25 cents a piece. Got 24 oysters today, 12 Blackberry Point and 12 Lucky Lime. Both the bf and I liked the Blackberry point ones best but both were great. So fresh, and amazingly tasty with just some lemon juice. My family and I were in Montreal for a long weekend and made a stop at Marché Jean Talon before heading home. It's not easy feeding 21 adults & kids, but you can't go wrong Poissonnerie Aqua Mare - we took up both picnic tables right outside the joint. The store front was pretty cool with the half boat counter. You can see the food made to order just to the side. And even with the lonnnnngggggg line up, they go through reasonably quick. We each lined up for our meals and I got the shrimp and calamari with fries. Queue open wide eyes and singing angels... OMeffinG! They were so fresh and flavourful - they just burst in your mouth! Love this place. Love this place ESPECIALLY in the summer, when you can get a mess of fried goodness to enjoy while people watching at Jean Talon. You can choose between fish and chips or one or two of breaded and fried calamari, smelt, or shrimp. The seafood is super fresh and cooked to order, so it arrives in your grasp, piping hot. With a light sprinkling of lemon juice and a quick dunk into your sauce of choice (tartar sauce, spicy mayo... there may be another option as well, I don't quite remember), you get the perfect balance of crisp savoury seafood, bright acid, and creamy cool sauce. My only criticism is that it wouldn't hurt to sop up some of the excess oil from the fryer before transferring to the serving container, as it is on the greasier side... After buying some mussels from this shop, i came back home to cook them. After putting them on the pan, a strong and bad smell came from it. Just to be sure, I finished the cooking of it. Then, instead of a fantastic dinner, I ate like a quarter of the 4lbs of mussels because the rest was just really stinky with a strong, bad, taste. I called them and after 10 minutes arguing, they asked me to come to their shop for an exchange. A guy with a black shirt named Walter welcomes us with a cold : You know how to cook them, right ? Yes, yes.. Then, he takes one of the mussels from the bag (which was stinking badly, you can't ignore that or else you are just dishonest) and eats one in front of us : For me they are pretty good. He even goes further by giving one to another employee and asking him if the mussel is good ! After he had enough fun mocking us, he takes a bag of mussels... that we declined. How this guy dared mocking his clients in such a filthy way ? ! No more Aquamare for me. read more
