Visited Aqua for an early evening meal with the Grandparents-in-Law before seeing a show at the Old Vic.
It ticked all the right boxes, and we were pleased that we decided upon this place to take them.
Great location on the Welshback, it enjoys a waterfront view, and is near to the hubbub and action of King Street, Baldwin Street, St Nicks and Corn Street.
The decor was very clean, smart and modern. Ligting was warm and atmospherically dimmed.
The staff were all very friendly and attentive, and made sure our water was topped up throughout and that we wanted for nothing.
The early evening menu is fantastic value, offering 2 courses for 11.95 or 3 courses for 13.95. The main menu is extensive and quite good value also, offering antipasti, salads, pastas, pizzas, steaks, and other Italian meat and fish dishes.
We we went for the early evening menu, and enjoyed:
- mushroom croquettes with rocket salad and aioli
- mozzarella and garlic flatbread
- battered cod strips with triple cooked chips
- rump steak with bearnaise sauce and double cooked chips
- sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream
- tiramisu
- chocolate tart with white chocolate sauce
All of the above well cooked and very tasty, but I was dissapointed with a few bits.
-The aioli wasn't very nice, it tasted like it was friom one of those pre-made squeezy bottles you get on burger vans.
-The chips didnt appear to be double fried or triple fried.
-The cod and chips could have done with a token garnish to give the plate a little colour. My heart sinks when I see an all-beige plate.
-I'm sure the steak main was supposed to come with fine green beans, but it came with a garnish of watercress instead.
We chose Aqua because it was one of few restaurants in the area that serves good quality 'traditional dishes' that would appeal to the Grandparents, with a nice atmosphere. For those purposes it was spot on, and we are pleased we visited.
However, if it was just me and my other half then I think we might have chosen somewhere else to dine. There are soooo many good places to eat in this area! How lucky we are, eh? read more
