As with many of my road trips these days, a visit to a stationary and fountain pen specialty store is always on the list when it's close to my route. My latest trip brought me to this well-stocked place. This was only my second visit to a fountain pen shop and I found it to have far more selection and variety than the first I visited. Some primary brands included Pilot (they even have a Namiki on display), Cross, Kaweco, Lamy, Sailor, Faber-Castell, Visconti, and many more. Tons of ink including a massive selection of Diamine alone. I even noticed a brand I'd never seen before called Kyo no Oto. Pens aside, there's a decent selection of paper and cards, a few unique wooden boxes, leather goods (pouches and bags), and even a small assortment of antique inkwells. Prices are high when compared to shopping online, but that's the price of convenience. The location is cool - in an old shopping center adjacent to a historically significant hotel building. Staff was overly helpful and welcomed me to dip and try any pen. Worth a look even for non-enthusiasts. read more

This was a really fun place for me to go and full points to Lucas for hanging with me on this trip. I wanted to see some ink and fountain pens in person and this was a great place to do it. They had a wide selection of pens and inks from several top shelf brands. I spent more than I wanted to, it was great. The man staffing the store when we were there was able to answer my questions and was really very helpful. This is located in a shopping mall that shares a parking garage with a hotel. Place total rip off. Took Oma's Demonstrator pen in for repair early summer 2024, left pen for repair. Told would be ready in 4 to 6 weeks. I have Customer's Claim Check. Stopped in many times since. Proprietor Douglas seems totally miffed about whereabouts of pen. Promised to call me numerous times about status. No call, no pen. Have heard of similar incidents since. Not a good or trustworthy business. Anticipate proceeding Hamilton Co. court for recompense, and punitive damages if includible item of damages. Do not trust or deal with this business in any capacity. read more

I had previously been a satisfied customer of appointments, and they offered to assist me further. Therefore, I sent a Fountain pen and ballpoint fillers to Appointments for them to recommend the best replacement inks. Appointments never contacted me about my request for service, nor did they return approximately 10 phone calls over months. Appointments has not returned my items despite multiple written requests by e-mail and its chat feature. Every time I call and get a live person, I am told that Mr. Kennedy is in the Stockroom. Other times, no one answers (during business hours), and the voicemail box is full. Proceed at your own risk if you chose to be a customer of Appointments. read more

This is the only store I've found in the area with a wide variety of high quality pens and other writing materials. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, giving recommendations that fit your budget. It's also fun to browse puzzles, stationery and Rookwood pottery collections. I had a problem with one of the pens I bought. A member of the Porkopolis Pen Club encouraged me to take it back. I did and Doug was nothing but helpful. He called me a few days later and offered to exchange the pen and even agreed to ship it to me. I must say, they redeemed themselves. read more

ou've likely to never been into this shop, or even see it at all, unless you are an extreme pen enthusiast. Or, like me, they were offering free handwriting analysis during the Carew Tower open house and you thought, hey, why not? I'm pleased to say that I got my handwriting analyzed and so much more. As I waited for my turn to meet with the expert, I struck up a conversation with one of the shop keepers - a delightful gentleman with an infectious enthusiasm for writing and literature. Not only did he let me try out of some the pens in the store, but he showed me how to use a felt-tip (basically, a feather pen). He took the time to show off some of the prized antique pen collection within the store and I truly enjoyed speaking with him. There was no pressure to make a purchase and he encouraged me and other customers to come to the store just to hang out. Not only was he an expert in his field, but he was a wonderful host. If I ever get the craving for a high-society pen, I will know exactly who to turn to. read more

Appointments, also known as "the Business Store," is another good shop in the Carew Tower. Its name is both creative and appropriate as the store specializes in "fine writing instruments" (and refills and inks), as well as other executive gift items and accessories. Appointments offers a lot, although they are most well known for their fancy pens. Some of the other aforementioned corporate gifts include globes, timepieces, day planners, chess sets, stationery, picture frames, and other desk items such as paper weights. They also sell wall maps and many Johnston & Murphy products, plus they have a large bear in the store (see photo), which I am not entirely sure of its purpose. Is it a gift, or is it just meant to attract customers in? Overall, Appointments is a pretty nice store and the staff is friendly and helpful. Personally, I'm a big "clicky" pen fan, but there comes a time and place where you need stylish, more elegant writing "instruments." Plus they have all of their nice gift items, many of which can really enhance the appearance of one's office and desk. A side note, the "Appointments" lettering/signage on the outside of the store is the exact typeface (font) as Morton's The Steakhouse. No, that doesn't mean anything, but perhaps you can draw some correlation to the nice items in the store. read more

A great place to get a decent pen, and learn about pens. I bought my wife a pen as a gift, and the owner helped me find it. We bounced all over the store and he was patient and didn't push the $400 pen any harder than the $25 pen - he just wanted me to find "the right pen" for this gift. Also they set me up with refills for my Mont Blanc fountain pen - the ink is better than Mont Blanc's - flows nicely, quick dry, and doesn't fade. Prices are reasonable, but this is not a place to look for bargains. Great service, selection and fair prices. read more

Cincinnati has one of the best, if not the best, pen stores East of the Mississippi and quite possibly the country. Total pen heaven! Fantastic and knowledgeable sale staff. As the other reviewers noted, the employees are phenomenally informative and there is ZERO pressure. I was considering a relativity expensive fountain pen, but my salesperson recommended that I enter the world of fountain pens with a more economical model. Their prices are fair.
