There were gentleman working in the parking lot who did a nice job of directing us where to park. There were a lot of people coming in and at a steady flow. The people taking tickets were quick and efficient which kept the line moving. That was very nice. The lantern festival was in a gated section. We set up our chairs and then went to a second section for food from the food trucks. There was also a long row of Port A Potties as well as a sink with soap. That was very much appreciated. Though there were thousands of people there we never felt crowded. Everyone was behaving and having a good time. We talked to two security guys during our time at the festival and they were extremely nice. When it was time to go the parking lot directors kept the traffic moving and people were able to leave without sitting and waiting for a long time. We also saw a car being towed out. It was nice to know that if something had happened to us that help would be available.

While in Buffalo recently, friends suggested we make the hour trek to Ellicottville to check out the festival. It's located in a small ski village, and -- never one to turn down the chance to check out a new place -- I jumped at the chance. Street parking was relatively easy to find, and we soon were meandering through the downtown at the foothills of the ski resort. With hills all around us and brilliantly color-changing leaves, it was here to beat the beautiful setting. If you know local festivals, you know what to expect -- booths with all sorts of arts, crafts, snacks, and unique local finds lined the middle of the streets, which had been closed off for pedestrian-only traffic. We perused the different booths and stores before stopping a spell for lunch. Happen to be out this way in the fall? Head on over and check it out for a relaxed afternoon in a colorful and cozy setting.

The drive down the (do I need to stop saying "the" in front of highways?) 219 was beautiful, and the weather was just the right amount of chilly to be enjoying my flannel and boots and hot apple cider. The main downside here is the traffic getting into town, but there really is nothing that can be done about it. You just have to be ready and be patient. The church just inside town was graciously offering "donation" parking (as opposed to the $10 parking further into town), and since it was on the edge of town, made it super easy to leave when we were done. The town of Ellicottville is also very charming, and I would love to come back again to enjoy the area on a normal day!

I liked all the vendors artwork it's hard to find that many artists at one place. Everyday and night they have bands playing and there really good. Actually I go for the food and it was just as good as it was 18 years ago plus the prices were reasonable plus the profits help a lot of organizations. If your in the area when it's going on it's worth stopping to walk around.

So, my husband and I were returning home from a weekend trip and I talked of how I've long wanted…read moreto take a road trip with no specific destination - one where I would just keep an eye out for interesting signs (museums, quirky stores, historic sites, parks, etc.). The kind of things I think about stopping to check out, but don't because I'm focused on the destination. So hubby suggested making one such stop on our way home - and lo and behold - Wilhem Winery. I enjoyed a tasting - very reasonably priced - and selected some wine to take home. The best part may have been the wine-making museum upstairs. Small, but really interesting. The gift shop is fairly typical of a small winery, but I always find it fun to browse. With plenty of seating, I'm sure this is a great place to hang out and sip wine with friends on a nice day.
