Situated on the second level in Southorn, the Computer Centre is right next to the B2 exit of the Wan Chai MTR. The setup is pretty simple; it is a maze of small shops that range from computer help to mobile repair to video games with an entrance / exit accessible only by escalators. The space is tight, with low ceilings and narrow hallways, which make this place somewhat claustrophobic especially when there are people crowding certain stores. My favorite time to come here is between 10-11am. Most of the shops are open and there is plenty of room to explore without the people rush. I've purchased mousepads, USB adapters, keyboards, camera memory, and basic electronics. Most of the things I've sought out can be purchased at any discount / flea market, but quality is a concern this is a good place to start. Every store has its own unique inventory, it never hurts to bargain and shop around. Always bring a smart phone with a picture of the desired item. It saves a lot of dialogue and keeps the shopping experience ideal. The prices aren't going to be as cheap as Kowloon, but it does the trick on short notice.

This place is packed with vendors working in all things IT...computers, cell phones, video cameras, cameras, TV, etc. You name it they have it. Dozens of vendors. We were on the top floor, as noted as the "professional floor" and being helped by AA I.T. Sytem Limited for our laptop repair. There are many vendors and many businesses, this is simply the one we selected. Purchase or repair...this was a good place to go. We would go back.

So yeah that tells you how hard the small businesses to survive here. It's not your average "phone cases", USB cables, battery chargers, etc low-end low-tech shops. It sells serious stuff just like what you'd get from Wan Chai Computer Centre. I was here a couple of times asking for some very specific items - And they always have them. The staff are not super geeky, but they know their stuff, or are at least helpful enough to check for you. I have yet bought any major items here (computers, monitors, etc) but they do have guarantee of 7 days return policy with the original package. I do feel like they are marginally pricier than Wan Chai, but it does justify my trip to Wan Chai just to buy something. So I'll stick with here as my go-to shop for day to day computer accessories.

It sells all of the standard computer wares that one might expect; hard drives, memory cards, printers, networking accessories, you get the idea, but also a number of other electronic items like shredders, card media accessories, and television accessories. What is refreshing, is to see a very well stocked computer store outside of the Wan Chai Computer Centre (but it does have sister branches in Wan Chai 298 and Mong Kok). What is also nice about this store is that they have quite a large chunk of real estate with all of their products displayed on shelves around the shop. As such, you don't feel like you're walking into a junk store. If you do have a chance to go, ask for Chris, he's very knowledgeable and will steer you in the right direction. It is useful if you do know something about computers, or what you want to buy, because they will try to up-sell you on some products. For example, I wanted to buy a hard drive for my Mac, and they presented me the Mac formatted one, which was HK$50 more expensive. It wasn't until I explain to them that I could reformat my own PC drive and save myself $50, that they conceded to give me what I wanted. The prices are very reasonable, comparable to the other computer centres around Hong Kong, despite being in Central. Don't forget to also ask for a discount. As with most stores in Hong Kong, the list price is not the real price. Ask for a discount you may get 5 to 10% off.

Aside from helping me price out various options, they were able to give me an unbiased perspective on all the big mobile providers and help me maximize my value for what kind of plan I wanted. I learned the hard way there is no such thing as unlimited plans anymore, but they managed to help me find the next best thing (10GB) for a little more than the cost of my initial tourist SIM. They tinkered around with several SIMs, hoping to find one that would work. They were such pros that they also helped fix my faulty audio jack and clean my phone interior at no charge! How's that for service? English seems to be ok, which might be good for all the tourists nearby. They are extremely diligent and polite and I would recommend their services to anyone.

I would describe the Festival Walk Apple Store as...CRAY CRAY to the max times 100. I came here a few weeks ago to look into purchasing an iPhone 6s with my mom. In order to purchase an iPhone, you have to wait in a pretty lengthy queue. I had my mom stand in line for me as I played with around with the display models. It took me about a minute to look at the models before I met with my mom in like. There I was stopped by a security guard asking me why I was cutting in line in Chinese. I explained to him that my mom was waiting in line while I was checking out what model and color I wanted. He then stated that I was cutting in line and that either my mom or I had to leave the line. Huh? Really? After giving us a somewhat hard time, my mom and I explained to the security guy that we were together and that my mom was waiting in line while I was testing out the models. We then explained we combined were only going to buy one iPhone, and not 10 phones each, therefore preventing others behind us from purchasing a phone (or 10 of them). He had given us a hard time, as he explained, because apparently each queuing customer can purchase up to 10 iPhones. I assume that many patrons buy the iPhones and then resell them in mainland China or overseas. I would have to say that my overall Apple store experience was an unpleasant one. First of all, it's super crowded and busy... so busy that they rarely pick up phone calls when you call their main telephone number. Secondly, I didn't like being given a hard time after explaining myself to the security guard. I guess maybe cutting happens a lot in this Apple store that they need to implement strict queuing policies? I guess you can say all Apple stores aren't created equal -- each country is different unfortunately. Of note, Apple's warranty is country specific. So, while Hong Kong offers unlocked iPhones, which is great and all... However, the warranty only applies to Hong Kong. So if your iPhone craps out (as mine has done in the past), you'll need to ship your iPhone to Hong Kong for repairs or fly over to get it serviced. This could get to be expensive. So buyer beware! Your warranty will not be valid in the US or wherever your home country is.

As usual, it's a busy store with lots of customers browsing and trying out Apple products. The staff is a bit more aggressive than what I am used to in the US and may make you feel a bit uncomfortable with their eagerness to help with what you bees if you are just browsing. There's plenty of staff to help out if you decide to ask for assistance with product info or checkout. The checkout process is seamless and efficient with every staff member carrying portable credit card processing iPhones and can help you at any time. I accidentally walked to the 2nd floor Genius Bar area and in usual HK fashion, the staff was a bit abrupt and may seem rude to those of us used to Western style customer service.

This little store in Queensway plaza (a handy covered walkway connecting the Bank of America Tower, and other Admiralty office buildings, to Pacific Place) has been a great source of gifts. Nicely priced - not markets' prices, but not Pacific Place prices either - and suitably different. Brightly coloured phone cases and laptop bags share shelf space with desk fans and speakers. If you are looking for old systems, there will be a vendor here for it. Building your own, someone here will build one for you. Though things have changed since the last time I was here about 4 years ago. There were only about 75% of the vendors left here who are selling games, and gaming accessories. There was a whole downstairs underground level to the shopping center, however most of it was all computer components. There was also a huge thing about selling multicades here. For those who don't know, it's a unit with hundreds to thousands of games preload into a single unit. Many of them now are full sized control units which just needs to be plug and play. Beware if you are taking it back home to another country. Some of these units may violate some copyright laws. Also, the power supply may be different at home than what you have in HK, so buyer beware for both of those. Overall, still worth the visit. It still took us a good 2 hours to visit all the stalls, even with less vendors here. We still walked out of there with a bag full of games and vintage games (a couple of original game boy and a neo-geo game).
