Breakfast Sandwich
Jim R.

Food is great. Really is. All of it. It's like a camp breakfast or what gramma made. But oh my god the wait in the fall will really test your will to survive with kids. Favs are the French toast, waffles or breakfast sandwich.

In case you need to know what to so with those apples!

I have driven the route from NYC to Buffalo via Binghamton more times than I can count. I mix it up and drive different ways, but unless I have a reason to be in Albany, I will drive through Binghamton at some point on the trip. I usually stop once along the way to get a coffee or gas, but I rarely have a meal along the way. However, when I'm traveling with someone, we always stop somewhere along the way. That's how I found the Roscoe Diner (and their famous deep fried french toast) some time ago. Well, I was reading roadfood.com and learned of this place, with my favorite, breakfast food. Thought it deserved a visit. Its only a few (pretty in the Spring) miles out of the way, and well worth it if you want a meal. On Sundays they only do breakfast, but the rest of the week they also serve lunch foods, which looked good on the menu. We had pancakes, which they are known for. These are indeed large pancakes. No doubt about it. Had the short stack, and they were too much for one to eat. Both the bacon and the sausage served with them was terrific. I can understand why people love the pancakes, but I might have preferred them cooked with a little lest grease. Three stars for a few reasons. Its a large place with some indoor and some outdoor seating. You seat yourself "when you see a cleared table". OK, fair enough. There was a table open, we took it (and yes, it had been cleared). It took a awhile, quite a while, for the server to come to take our order. She was charming, but clearly very very busy, so maybe they were shorthanded, I don't know. I felt the indoor was very kitchsy (sp?), and it really was a little much. They have a store you sort of have to walk through to get to the tables. I don't know, but it felt odd. Another issue is, they have plenty of parking, however, its some sort of gravel dirt combo and had HUGE holes in it, really huge, the kind a wheel gets lost in no matter how slow you go. I was waiting to hear the bottom of my car scrape off on the edge. This place does a seriously brisk business, do something about the driveway and parking lot.

In general, their drinks are pretty good. No real issues here, so if you're just going there for coffee, have at it. However, it's mostly standard fare (premade mixes and syrups) with a couple seasonal specials. But the food... I got a blueberry lemon cookie that didn't taste like either, nor was it even sweet, just tasted like soft flour (couldn't even force myself to finish it). Or the Big Mac wrap; the ingredients were all over the place so you couldn't really get a complete bite, it was dripping in grease, and it gave me a stomachache for several hours thereafter (despite no food allergies). There have been some instances where I had a good pastry or got a sandwich that was actually pretty good, but because the times my food wasn't good were just TOO seriously bad (not just meh, BAD), it completely broke my trust. I can't always be sure that I'll order something and it'll be edible. So while I might consider stopping by for a drink out of convenience and support for a local small business (rather than buying it at the gas station), I won't be ordering food.

I'm definitely a fan any…read morecafe or similar space that integrates art into their environment, and there were quite a variety of lovely pieces at Carol's - many by the owner, but also included are other local artists. The menu, of course, also has "Carol's Favorite 'Comfort Food' Sandwiches" on the menu, all named after famous artists. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm a huge Van Gogh fan, so I ordered the "Van Gogh" sandwich that comes with oven roasted turkey breast layered on sourdough bread and lettuce, tomato, and mayo. The sandwich was good, but I have to say that proportions of the ingredients felt a bit off. I also noticed during the prep of my plate that the chips came from opening a bag (a bulk version similar to ripple chips you'd just buy at the store). In a cafe space like this, you can't necessarily expect people to be making everything from scratch... but I think it's just helpful to note to keep expectations in line. The drink that I ordered was made well (their beverage selection is at the very back of the menu). You can definitely tell that this is a community space, and it seemed like a number of locals filtered in throughout the lunch. There are notes on the tables that advise of a 90 minute limit for sitting at the table (not something I've ever actually seen before), and there's wifi available for use by customers. Perhaps an awkward experience was just related to the overall service? You grab a menu and choose your table if you're dining in, but you end up paying at the counter. Personally, if I'm going to sit down to eat then I'd prefer to have the check brought to the table and pay that way. The space is a bit cramped by the counter, so it seems like it'd benefit to minimize the foot traffic that has to wait there. And perhaps this is silly, but upon paying for the lunch, the server handed me my receipt and said "Just sign here", and then seemed to be somewhat... abrupt? I feel like I'm pretty low maintenance when dining out, but it just left me going "OH. Okay. Time for me to get out of the way" (it's worth noting that at the time, there was nobody waiting around, or to get to, the counter). Still, it was enjoyable to stop at Carol's Coffee & Art Bar. It's a more unique space with nice offerings.

Isn't much to look at when you walk in but it's basically a diner so what do you really expect? . Menu isn't huge but what they do they do very well. First thing I noticed when the breakfast came to the table was that the potatoes were fried in butter. A lot of places we have gone to use a little oil on the flat top, nope this place uses butter. And not that cheap imitation butter either they use some real butter. Those potatoes were incredible. We both had the steak and eggs, we both ordered the steak or air which for a breakfast steak is about a 25 second window before it's overcooked, and these guys nailed it. Everything else we had was really good including the French toast. A lot of places have it rather soggy, this wasn't crispy but it was well, let's just say less soggy. We asked him about other things we like for example the sausage biscuits and gravy which they only do on Saturday so we have to go back now. I also want to try their breakfast sandwiches because I was talking to them about these, and for those that are in this area that remember a place on I think Broad Avenue called Pasquale's.. well Pasquale's used to have the best breakfast sandwiches, and the Clinton diner here is telling me that they make theirs a little bit bigger. Definitely has my interest peaked. So anyway yes, I definitely recommend this place. The prices were not too bad really, all of the food we have here I think was about $30. For two steaks, and basically a third order of French toast, I'd say not too bad.
