Earl Grey yet Typhoo in a mug, attractive wallpaper yet squeezy brown sauce - Appetites somehow manages to combine a genteel tearoom with an old-fashioned cafe where you never pronounce the 'e'. But if it has a slight feel of a curio, especially given its indoor market base, it soon means business with its menu. Then you just give up working out what it's trying to be and simply enjoy.
Yes there's nicely-priced sossie sarnies and fry-ups (and good they are too), but also 'home-made' meals including roasts. For every toastie or spud there's a main course like fish and chips, pies, or Brummie favourite, faggots. Whopping salads, puds and an impressive list of side orders also set it apart. It should say something about the popularity of this bright and roomy venue that there are six copies of The Sun available to customers. No wonder the mugs bear Appetites' logo. It's proud of itself and rightly so. This is a little-known gem.
