Great company and service that has been in business for years. I would recommend them again and again.

Mixed feelings here. I want to say up front I'd likely contact them again for an estimate if I need more HVAC work in the future, despite this experience. I moved forward with Appel to install a mini split unit in my attic conversion bedroom, mainly for summer use, after collecting multiple estimates. Why I chose Appel: the on-site assessment was the most thorough, as well as their documentation, the unit they would install was highly rated, service included a quality check and they offered the best warranty on service/parts. Not the cheapest but I felt the best price for what was being offered. What went well: communication once scheduled. I had to reschedule due to the tech falling behind on a bigger than anticipated job. No problem, mine wasn't an emergency and I had a new date within the day. Two techs did the installation, one outside, one inside. They arrived close enough to on time (given Indy's road construction) and both were really nice about my annoying dog. Especially the outdoor guy who had to navigate a more inconvenient path out so he wouldn't open the gate and accidentally let him out. I was working from home during the installation and both were courteous when interrupting me; I was in meetings much of the time. Both cleaned up following the installation-no trash in sight. Why the mixed feelings: it was difficult to contact with minor questions. I had to leave messages following their answering service, which got frustrating because...the indoor guy did some damage to my wall in the installation. He also removed my curtain rod and reinstalled it so it was no longer evenly placed over the window. I know this sounds trivial but he also didn't get it right the first time to account for the end cap and there was an extra set of holes. He didn't use the anchors and I discovered all of this when my dog sat on the bottom of the curtain and the whole thing fell down. He didn't mention the curtain rod but did show me the hole in the drywall under the unit itself. Appel did come out again and look at it but I had to keep calling back. Appel sent someone to assess the damage and he also fixed the curtain rod. He also explained why they couldn't install the unit another 4-6 inches to the left to avoid moving the curtain rod altogether, which really didn't matter because it already happened. He apologized pointing out the technician was new to Appel and hadn't yet learned how they did things. I understand training woes but these shouldn't be a customer issue. They ultimately put me in contact with their drywall/paint partner and we started that process. The indoor guy also didn't wear the booties and walked in and out onto my carpeted bedroom with his work boots, which I didn't notice until I saw the outdoor guy make a point of putting his on in front of the other guy when coming in. All that being said, the installation was completed within time and Appel did honor their commitment to repairing damages and their guy spent a lot of time fixing my curtain rod and writing it all up. I wish I didn't have to doggedly pursue it but I think this has become a standard for everything, unfortunately. My installation was about a half day, 5 June, drywall repair 24 July. Note: drywall/paint company was someone else and I had a couple of weeks where I had empty space with them, too. read more

I called Appel Heating in January of 2026 because my boiler quit working. Days later, Appel sent out 2 different technicians to service the boiler, and both told me that they had no experience with boilers. After 2 more days of being without heat, Appel sent out another service technician who said that I needed new exhaust pipes from my boiler. The next day, 2 more technicians came to replace the exhaust pipes, but this didn't fix the problem. After a few more days, Appel sent out their "Boiler specialist," and he told me that the technicians that replaced the exhaust pipes installed them incorrectly, they were not at the correct angels. Long story short, I needed a new boiler and got a better price from another company. When I received a bill from Appel for the exhaust pipe replacement, I told them that since I was told that it was installed incorrectly, I didn't think that I should have to pay for it. It's getting COLD OUTSIDE and didn't want it to get COMD INSIDE! We used another company to maintain our AC/Furnace for a number of years, but our last experience wasn't great. So I did some research and sent out a few requests to a few companies and Appel was the first company to respond. I corresponded with Katrina few times on availability and pricing and maintenance agreements and because of her responsiveness and the receives, figured I'd give them a try. Joseph was our technician and he did a great job. He answered my questions and knew his stuff. He has been with the company close to two years. I trusted him. This will be a somewhat long post as I want to leave a detailed explanation for my 1 star review. First, I have used Appel more than once and have spent well over $6000 with them. I had them install a new radiant heat system in an addition for me, they have replaced literally every part on my furnace, and I have had them do normal service calls for maintenance. I have always been happy with their work until this time. I will start by saying this review is not based on any one individual, everyone I spoke to was courteous and professional. I originally called them on July 15th because my Expansion Tank for the boiler developed a hole in the side of the tank (not on any seam or connection point...literally a hole appeared straight through the metal wall) and was spraying water everywhere. I have shutoffs that isolate the expansion tank (in addition to others to shut and isolated various sections). On that call I was asked to send them a video after I described the situation. I sent it and he called back a couple of minutes later and stated (almost verbatim) "I have never seen anything like that and neither has the tech I showed it to". He then told me that the part was still under warranty and he would call back to let me know what would be done. I never got a call back. On October 20th I finally had enough of waiting and called them again. This time a nice lady answered, I explained the situation and she (obviously) had no specific knowledge of that first call so she stated she would call me back once she got more information from their files. She called back within the hour and stated that she had found the video I sent it and watched it and that she showed it to another tech but there was no other notation on my file. She then stated the first available appointment was on the 29th (today) and I said that would have to work if it was their first availability. I was then told that they would first send a tech to diagnose the issue then return the next day to do the work. I told her that was an unnecessary step as 3 people had already viewed the video and it was clear that there was a hole and water was shooting out of it. She said that was their process and they would have to first diagnose the issue. I told her fine, send the tech but ALSO to go ahead and bring a new expansion tank as the tech would obviously see what the video shows. The tech arrived today (also a great guy and very nice) and saw the hole and discoloration on the tank due to the water, I then showed him the video (total time for him to see the actual damage then see the video was maybe 3 minutes) and then he states "why didn't they send the tank with me" to which I responded that I had no idea. He immediately went to call his manager, we waited 10 minutes and the manager did not call back, so then the tech said he would try again. The tech then mentioned that the manager did not call but did send a text. The tech then told me that someone would call me back later today to discuss next steps. The tech then mentioned that there was a $100 service fee I had to pay. I told him I would not be paying at that exact moment and that I would gladly explain to the manager when he or she called me. A manager did call me at 5:29pm and the first thing he said was that the service fee was still due. After explaining everything to him (that I have just written here) and that I would not pay that fee as at least 3 different people in that company had viewed the video I sent them and that the tech didn't diagnose anything today his response was that it was "better if we no longer did business together" so basically fired me as a customer. I asked him if he thought it was acceptable for a company to not reach out to a long time customer for over 2 months and he did admit that was not good service. I then asked why they would not have sent out a replacement tank to do the work (that was obvious to all who had seen the video and to the tech that arrived today) and he stated it was because often times a customer is wrong about the problem and they do not want to purchase parts and then "get stuck with them" (his exact words). That is a valid explanation but I know I am not the only person in Indianapolis with a boiler system that might need a new tank. I looked up the price of this tank and it is $45. Even if there had been another issue with my boiler aside from the tank it was obvious that the tank was defective and would have to be replaced. I would have been happy with a simple apology, a statement that they would waive the fee in this situation, and that they would be out within a day or two to replace the tank. I would have paid that service fee and the labor had they actually done the work (they didn't even have a tank and I was told they would have to order one) but not after all this. INSTEAD, The manager said he did not want to do business with me ever again. Poor Customer Service on this call. read more

We needed 1 hole drilled from the air conditioner draining into our electrical circuit breaker. My husband could have done it but he didn't have the drill but. Or air conditioner was running great and had just been serviced but our regular gut had just retired. The owner sent 2 men out. I guess to get extra $$$? They wanted to take out air conditioner apart. We said it didn't need that. My husband went up in the attic to show them. They had to leave to get the drill bit and consult the boss on what they would charge. Meanwhile the water continued to pour on the circuit breaker. About an hour later they came back and finally drilled the hole. It stopped leaking and then drained properly. They charged $100 for a service call and $200 to drill a hole that took about 3 to 4 minutes. We paid them $300 to finally do what we told them was wrong and drill a little hole. W never have called them again! HA!! They even had the nerve to ask us to sign up and pay for a future service contract. We got a wonderful honest guy now that does his own work which is perfect so far and reasonable on price. Too bad because Appel was close to us! read more

To start off, we purchased a home that unbeknownst to us, was a terrible reno job. That being said, once it started getting cooler, we began having issues with our furnace because the people who renovated the house did a crappy install on the furnace and come to find out, all of the duct work was crushed, there were lines ran to walls with no vents...it was all a big mess and I'll spare all the details. So we were recommended Appel by the guy who installed our water softener. The pros of Appel are all the technicians (and we met a lot because of the issues we had!) were nice when they came out. On one of the first visits, the discovered there wasn't a drain trap, so they scheduled a time to install that. I'm not sure when it happened, but at some point, there was a hole cut in the drain trap pan and while we were out of state for a week in November, there was a leak which caused damage to the ceiling in one of our bedrooms, but Appel did cover the cost of having someone come repair it quickly. The cons we had were: We were told someone would be calling us to come out and fix the drain trap pan since they had cut a hole in it that caused the leak, but despite having technicians come out several times after that, no one ever seemed to know when someone would be calling to get that fixed. Frustrating. The other con is there were several times I called and was told they would get back with me right away, but I would often have to wait days (I know they were probably tired of me calling, and trust me, I didn't want to call!!! But when my furnace kept turning off, not having heat, especially since we have a new baby at home, isn't an option!) One of the managers came out a couple times to see exactly what was going on and see how they could find the ultimate solution to getting our furnace fixed permanently. They spoke with my husband about how the furnace would need to be moved and several other things that needed done. In attempts to save some money, my husband did some work for them before hand (the furnace is in the attic so he had to tear down some things so that they could move it) and once he did, the manager came back out around Christmas to have a look in order to give us a quote. He gave us a verbal quote while at the house, but said he needed to go back to the office to get it all down on paper. I understand there was the holidays, but after a couple weeks, we checked back in and was told they would get us a quote. After several times of us reaching out and they telling us they are working on it and will get back to us, I got fed up, especially with below zero temperatures in the forecast and us not having heat. I'm no expert, but I do know it doesn't take 4+ weeks to give a quote, especially since I contacted another company who came out the same day I called and gave us a written quote on the spot and had the big job done less than a week later. Seems to me Appel didn't really care about us as customers or maybe they didn't want to do the job since it was a bigger one, but I'd respect it more if they were up front with us if that was the case because they knew we didn't have a good heat supply in the house AND that we have a little baby. read more

Tyler helped with our furnace after hours yesterday. It was making a noise after it turned off. He found the problem very quickly. One of the stickers (co2 sticker) on the inside of the unit had come loose and gotten sucked in further. I guess the sticker being hit when the blower was slowing down made the noise. There is nothing better than being the recipient of excellent customer service, especially when you have a major problem that needs to be resolved. Humidity levels in our finished basement continued to creep up and portable Honeywell dehumidifiers were just simply not up for the task. I contacted 5 different companies, including AirTron, Williams Comfort Air, Chapman Heating and Cooling, One Hour Heating and Cooling, and Appel Heating and Air Conditioning. When I met with each, I told all five that I wanted to accomplish three things: 1) discuss my humidity problem in detail, 2) learn about the strategy they would deploy to solve the issue, and 3) briefly discuss pricing. When I called Appel, I immediately knew I was in good hands. The gentleman who answered listened, cared, and worked the schedule to have owner, Scott Appel, visit our home later that day. Scott was great and took a lot of time to learn about my problem, walk the basement, and design a long term solution to fix the problem. The installation crew of Fernando and Isaac are two of the best in the business and completed the install in a timely manner. They communicated perfectly, took extra measures to not damage any of our new home (see photo of protective covering they placed around our home to protect the new carpet), and did a perfect job installing our new Apriaire E100 Dehumidifier. We could not be happier and highly recommend Scott, Fernando, Isaac, and their entire team should anyone be in need of heating or air conditioning needs. Scott runs a tight ship and demands attention to detail and perfection from his team. He even personally inspected the work to be sure it met the highest of standards. My landlord has used Appel for the past 9 years to maintain my HVAC system. Just this year, I needed a new furnace and they arrived timely. System install took around 2 1/2 hours. They had to return and replace the thermostat on an emergent basis (furnace stopped working on a day the wind chill dropped below zero). The technician arrived at the beginning of the time window and again was very prompt and courteous. Problem solved in one visit! Stay far away from Appel HVAC. We purchased a new Furnace and AC from Appel with a 5 year parts and labor warranty as well as a 10 year manufactures' warranty. Our system is 2 years old and needed maintenance. Appel not only charged for the maintenance but on top of that for every visit there is a $94 service charge that is charged for every visit. Highly disappointing on a 2 year old system. Not willingness from Appel to help on price or to disclose the service call fee up front regardless of whther the system is warranted or not. read more

Appel put in my new furnace and air conditioner in 2018. I've paid for servicing every year for the next years service and had just had my unit serviced. But a month later, as I was getting my home ready to go on the market, my air quit working. I called for a serviceman but while waiting, I was told to flip the fuse switches on the unit. I did this and the air came back on. When the serviceman arrived he stated he found nothing wrong. I paid the service call fee. Within a couple of weeks, Again I called and a different serviceman, Drew was sent out. He stated that the freon was empty, on my 3-4 year old air conditioner. My previous 25 year old unit never ran out of coolant. My unit was filled and I was charged over $100 for the freon. He stated that the possibility of a leak may need checked out. I've also received a bill for materials. Then, a day when the house was being shown, the realtor shared with my realtor that the house was very hot. That evening my thermostat read 97 even though it was set on 72. Again, I called and requested Drew to come out. He tested for a leak, stated he found it in the coil, stated the unit wasn't properly insulated and so completed that. This time I was charged for repairs and materials. Here's my issue, shouldn't a loss of Freon have been found by the initial maintenance check? Since it wasn't and no issue found on visit 2 by the second guy, why was I charged the visit when I'd already paid for the maintenance. Then, on visit 3 I was charged for the Freon on a 3-4 year old unit when it shouldn't have leaked in the first place at that age of a unit, plus, have received a bill for a service of a problem that was missed in the maintenance service and a service call. Then, the 4th visit I'm being billed for materials and repairs on the 3-4 year old unit when it was stated that it wasn't properly insulated which was their installers mistake. And what about the leak? Did it just disappear or will the buyer of my home or the buyer when it leaks enough to need more coolant. Let's just say I'm very frustrated for being charged for services that should have been completed and found from the time I purchased the unit. I don't have a problem with paying to have my unit serviced. If the unit were older and began having issues, I'd understand that as well. But to have such a young unit that was faithfully serviced every year and had just been serviced with no issues, all of a sudden have an issue that I'm being charged for when it's clear it's a unit and serviceman's issue just doesn't seem fair. My serviceman for visits 3 and 4, Drew, was very efficient and professional and I'm thankful he found the problem and appears to have taken care of the issue. I'm just frustrated that I'm paying on a unit that should have a warranty and issues that should have been the companies responsibility. read more

Cruel rip off If there is zero I would be giving to them. I came back home after 2 months travel and found my gas furnace was not burning gas. I called Appel that my old owner was working with them. They came very quickly and checked the furnace. The guy just lit the pilot only and charged to me $129 just for 5 minutes. $89 was for visiting and $40 for lighting the pilot!! Asked him to make at least tune up and he said no need for tune up. I would be happy to pay $89 if they could find a real problem. But this is real rip off!! read more

We had issues with our gas furnace not kicking on and we had several companies come out over the course of a couple of years that diagnosed it as a thermostat issue, but it still kept happening. Appel came out and kept troubleshooting until the technician found it was a faulty board in the furnace. It's finally fixed! read more

Very disappointing service support. Called Tuesday morning to schedule a service call for Thursday. At that time I was told that would not be a problem. Called Thursday morning first thing to confirm I would receive a call and have my unit serviced which I was assured it would happen. Called at 2:00pm to check status and was then told they weren't sure which day I met get service, possibly over the weekend. Very disappointing customer service. read more

Jay from Appel turned what should have been two visits into a year long affair. I was renting in Kokomo and my landlady that loves Appel for her Apartments in Indy so she used them for her rental house in Kokomo too. I had been stripping floor adhesive with some strong solvents, so I wasn't at my best and Jay took advantage of that. The AC was not working and he came out to look at the system. He tried to sell a new one first after seeing it was older than the furnace. Outside I had kicked the power conduit to the outside unit while he was watching and it started working and that was good enough for him to call it a day and bill my landlady. It stops again, and after a couple of more visits a circuit board on the furnace is replaced with over the phone help from one their better repair guys. A third time it not working, another circuit board and so on. After about a year, he finally replaces the shorted power cable to the outside unit (has to upgrade to current code and puts in a outside box at the wall) and cleans the fins like he said needed done a year earlier (this time mentioning if I had cleaned it my self without the special solution it would not have done any good - he would have left and come back for another visit later). On one visit he came out without a new circuit board or anything else related to the call (a wasted trip as he planned?) Another time after getting the furnace running he took out a pen knife and cut the end of a small rubber hose on the controls and then call my attention to it. He told me it had cracked from old age. Problem was the furnace was about 2 years old and I saw him sabotage it. The guy would do anything to get another service call close to his home in Tipton. A little truth, a little lie, a little competence, a little incompetence, that is what you can expect from Jay. Thing is, if he did his job the first time there would not have been the need for at least two of the three circuit board replacements. Only things positive I can say is he friendly and found a old dirty furnace filter on top of the furnace where they have provided a hard to use spot for filter (I had been replacing the one behind the air intake grille - why 2 filters I don't know - bizzare) read more

As a single parent, first-time home buyer, I started using Appel when I moved to Indy in 2005. I've never had to have them come out except for regular inspections, and they've kept my unit working well. Now, my home is 19 years old, and the old furnace finally couldn't keep me cool this summer. The owner came out and prevented me from "over buying" a larger system that the house did not need. I also got a credit for the "patch job" they had done for me a couple of weeks earlier to get me through the heat wave until my new unit was installed. Works like a charm...and I've learned my lesson...ALWAYS sign up for the maintenance agreement. read more

My wife and I hired Appel to evaluate our furnace and air conditioning system in our home that was not cooling or heating properly. A technician came to our house to inspect the issues and concluded that the issue was a bad furnace control board and thermostat that wasn't communicating to the system as it was outdated. We were advised that the only option was to replace the entire system for $1,263. Over the course of the next week, the temperature never changed in the house and the air conditioner never turned on. We contacted Appel again to investigate the problem; the same technician inspected the system but this time said that the issue was a freon leak which he couldn't or didn't locate apparently. Given the phasing out of freon, the only viable option was to replace the entire HVAC system. We subsequently asked for second opinions from two local and reputable HVAC companies, both of whom opined that the "new control system" we were led to believe was necessary, was in fact above and beyond necessary for the low and old level of our system. In essence, we were sold the nicest components for a builder grade HVAC system. Worse yet, the true issue was not with the furnace nor its electronic components at all or a freon issue, but instead was the result of a bad txv valve that was discovered in 5 minutes by another HVAC company. So, the system we were sold didn't, nor would it ever, fix the true issue. We contacted the owner of Appel on two separate occasions demanding a refund and offering to even return in store the equipment we were sold. To date, we have been completely ignored. Appel was the company I chose to replace my damaged furnace several years ago. The job was never completed, with two new vent runs to nowhere (had not allowed to drill for the vent openings) and I had equipment substituted without permission...used or old inventory was used instead. I held out the last of the pay, and due to my attorney losing the notice regarding this, I ended up owing quite a bit to them. They are not the company they appear to be. read more
