We were referred to OD for our individual taxes by some good friends whom we trust deeply. Our…read moretaxes are more complex than I felt confident doing on my own with TurboTax or whatnot, and we wanted professional help. On our initial calls, OD gave us some great free advice on our situation, and quickly built trust. Unfortunately, all that trust was quickly flushed down the drain during the tax prep process. We were pawned off to another accountant, who was very unresponsive and the opposite of prompt. After getting them all of our information weeks before their requested deadline, then multiple emails, calls, and voicemails, we finally got a return call late in the evening only a few days before the filing deadline asking for more information. After this, we didn't receive our review copy of the return until the date of the filing deadline! We had hoped (and communicated the same to OD), to have our CFP (not from OD) review the return before filing, but didn't get this opportunity due to OD being extremely late with the draft. We barely got it in! The simple way to handle this would've been clear communication, an estimate of the taxes we owed, and a recommendation to file and extension. None of this happened. There was no apology or acknowledgment of this, just an impersonal request for feedback months later, and a surprisingly huge $3500 bill (!!) in July. They also promised to review our return with us after the fact and make some recommendations for our next-year tax planning, but never made good on this promise. Needless to say, we will not be using OD in the future. Take your business and dollars elsewhere.

We moved from OR to WA and had our longtime accountant retire recently. O-D claimed that they were the answer for our accounting needs and made numerous promises to get us to sign up. They paired us up with a remote accountant who is never available to meet and won't call us back. Also very condescending. Before we realized what type of business O-D is, we included our daughter, a college student with a part time job, in the tax preparation services. They charged us $1500 to do her very basic taxes! Unbelievable! Under their watch we have to pay in more than we ever have in the history of our business. not personable, not accountable and not prompt. What more could you ask for? My mom's current CPA found a deduction that this business overlooked in a previous return that…read morewould have resulted in a substantial refund. Since my mom doesn't drive, I brought her paperwork to their office and showed them where the deduction would be. From day one communication from this business was exceptionally scarce. Most of my 'updates' were in the form of automatic reply emails. It had been almost 4 months since bringing them my mom's paperwork, and her amendment still had not been filed. Additionally, It had been over a month since I had received any word from this business (not even automatic email replies). In an act of desperation and frustration I repeatedly called their business one day in an attempt to find some clarity. The next day I received an email shaming me for my attempts to reach them and stating that after a "quick review" of my moms tax return they didn't "understand what is wrong with it", even though I carefully explained and showed where the omitted deduction was when I dropped off the paperwork. It was clear that this was a retaliation, and that my mom was now being punished for what they deemed as my bad behavior. Which again, was one day of trying repeatedly to reach someone by phone. When paying a business to do one's taxes, the consumer has a reasonable expectation that they will be prepared correctly, or that any errors or oversights will be corrected in a timely and professional manner. Their refusal to amend her tax return not only reflects a lapse in ethical judgment but also raises questions about their commitment to the principles of their profession. I am extremely disappointed and would certainly not recommend that anyone use this business.

TLDR: Kershaw & Associates cost us just over $14,000 in missed deductions, gave bad advice on…read moreretirement & HSA contributions, took 4 months to complete our return, and had terrible communication throughout. We're in our 30's, have a family, have had the same basic tax situation for 6 years, and are middle income earners- we don't need a genius CPA but we were hoping to build a relationship with a firm who we could grow with and become smarter about our financial picture. Kershaw is NOT it. We used them for the past 4 years, and their service has gotten worse and worse as the firm transferred ownership. In 2016 they missed a HSA deduction- when I found the miss (and did the paperwork myself to amend it) we came out with an extra $2,100 in refunds THAT THEY MISSED. So I asked them to file the amendment with our 2017 taxes and Dawn wanted to charge us $300 to file it....for paperwork that I did myself, on a deduction that they missed. I should have just stopped there, but it was already February 2018 and taxes were due- so we moved ahead with engaging them for another year. During which they moved offices in the middle of tax season (why would they do that?) and as I was eager to get an answer on an IRA contribution we wanted to make before the April 18th deadline I followed up asking for her advice and Dawn kept saying she'd have it by week end or that she'd temporarily misplaced our paperwork. Dawn did eventually get us an answer just before the deadline, telling us not to make a contribution for that year. So we followed her advice and did not. April 18th came and passed, and after chasing her for another few weeks, she told us she had filed for an extension for our taxes- but did not provide an ETA, finally on JUNE 26th we got an email from Cindy that they were ready. I'd also like to note that not once did she request missing information from us- and our new accountant said we were very organized so our documents/info wasn't to blame for the extra time needed here. When I went in for the tax appointment, Dawn lectured me that we should have made an IRA contribution- so I showed her her own email where she told us not to, for which she said she was mistaken- but since it was June there was no way to fix it. She then went on to explain how "generous" she was by not charging additional for the amended return (which was only needed because of their mistake)...and that their fee had gone up by $100. She provided no credit for the extended time, terrible communication, or bad advice that caused us to miss a retirement contribution. The reason I'm writing this review now is because we finally pulled our head out of the sand this year and choose a new accountant. Who at our first 1-hour meeting, pointed out another $7,000 in deductions that Dawn missed. Save yourself time and money and stay far, far away from this firm.

1 Extra star for the location - very easily accessible - although technically that's a bad thing…read moresince I wish I never found the place. I cannot speak for all the staff, maybe most of them are great, but if you want informative, coherent information, stay away from Kevin. I felt a little greasier after having left his office. Maybe it was the privilege of watching him clean up that thing he called lunch after I entered. Or the way he treated the nice front desk lady with dismissive spite, as if she forgot to buy his favorite creamer for the break room. But it was mostly the way he avoided my pointed questions by answering just about anything else other than what I was asking. Want to pay over $100 for an 'educational' meeting where you come out just a little bit stupider? I found just the place. Somehow, every time I asked a question, he circled back around to the same point regarding state taxes. Okay, cool, calm down, Rob. I'm sure he'll stop talking about this super-easy-to-understand concept that I could have just googled in under a minute. Just..gotta..cut him off. No, that's not working, he doesn't take breaths in between sentences. It must have been the mouth-breathing. On my way out, one of the other staff asked, "Did you get all the info you were looking for? He has a way of talking about whatever he wants to talk about." Thank you for the 1 hour late advice. I carried my remaining brain cells out of there and never returned.
