All while charging EXORBITANT fees beyond what was agreed to. Whenever we caught them in a mistake, they would make excuses, blaming the state, or us, or "we never got that password." According to the state a significant amount of the paperwork they filed for us was incorrect and we owe a lot of money. The state also said that the company could have gained access to everything they said they "couldn't do" with one phone call to them. Fraud? Incompetence? You decide. Just stay far away if you need a bookkeeper.

Most of my 'updates' were in the form of automatic reply emails. It had been almost 4 months since bringing them my mom's paperwork, and her amendment still had not been filed. Additionally, It had been over a month since I had received any word from this business (not even automatic email replies). In an act of desperation and frustration I repeatedly called their business one day in an attempt to find some clarity. The next day I received an email shaming me for my attempts to reach them and stating that after a "quick review" of my moms tax return they didn't "understand what is wrong with it", even though I carefully explained and showed where the omitted deduction was when I dropped off the paperwork. It was clear that this was a retaliation, and that my mom was now being punished for what they deemed as my bad behavior. Which again, was one day of trying repeatedly to reach someone by phone. When paying a business to do one's taxes, the consumer has a reasonable expectation that they will be prepared correctly, or that any errors or oversights will be corrected in a timely and professional manner. Their refusal to amend her tax return not only reflects a lapse in ethical judgment but also raises questions about their commitment to the principles of their profession. We were referred to OD for our individual taxes by some good friends whom we trust deeply. On our initial calls, OD gave us some great free advice on our situation, and quickly built trust. Unfortunately, all that trust was quickly flushed down the drain during the tax prep process. We were pawned off to another accountant, who was very unresponsive and the opposite of prompt. After getting them all of our information weeks before their requested deadline, then multiple emails, calls, and voicemails, we finally got a return call late in the evening only a few days before the filing deadline asking for more information. After this, we didn't receive our review copy of the return until the date of the filing deadline! We had hoped (and communicated the same to OD), to have our CFP (not from OD) review the return before filing, but didn't get this opportunity due to OD being extremely late with the draft. We barely got it in! The simple way to handle this would've been clear communication, an estimate of the taxes we owed, and a recommendation to file and extension. None of this happened. There was no apology or acknowledgment of this, just an impersonal request for feedback months later, and a surprisingly huge $3500 bill (!!) in July. They also promised to review our return with us after the fact and make some recommendations for our next-year tax planning, but never made good on this promise. Needless to say, we will not be using OD in the future. Take your business and dollars elsewhere.
