I took Barre class with Wendy and cannot rate my experience at Center of Gravity highly enough! I…read moreplay soccer in adult leagues and this class significantly improved my balance, strength, and agility. I wrongly assumed I could never be as good of a player compared to my early twenties, but Barre class got me back to that level (and I think even beyond it!) thanks to Wendy's Barre class. You don't even have to play a sport to see results, I would recommend Barre class at Center of Gravity to anyone! Everyone is super nice and very welcoming.

Thankfully, I found Center of Gravity and I am now a strong believer in the restorative benefits of yoga. Learning to breathe with movement and, strengthening my body through practice has resulted in increased flexibility for myself and less pain from arthritis. My instructors Wendy Orrison, Karen Stanley, Jen Coluzzi and Susan Dixon are professional, knowledgeable, compassionate and welcoming. During this time of Covid-19 the studio has offered almost all of their classes on-line at a discounted price to assist their clients and foster community. There is no judgement at Center of Gravity, whether you are a novice or someone who has done yoga all of their life. The environment is warm, inclusive of everyone and is a place to experience joy and laughter.

James River Yoga - Live music paired with yoga

What I love about James RIver Yoga is that you have the option to create your own spiritual…read moreexperience or utilize it as a physical fitness aid. Ashtanga Yoga is the perfect integration of hot yoga's physical fitness and the graceful flow (kind of dance-like) and breath. I was terrified to try Ashtanga thinking it would be too advanced for me or too demanding, but I found the instructor gently guided me through each and every move and each preceding flow was in preparation for the next level. I have tried hot yoga, vinyassa, and Astanga. For me, I dig Ashtanga because some days, I simply want to break a sweat and feel like I have accomplished a good work out. Other days I want to feel the constant movement and flow with the work out and others, I simply wish for the meditative-flow/ spiritual aspect of yoga. The way that Donna teaches Ashtanga allows you to take it how you want. There is no pushing for the ultimate work out or the highest of spiritual experiences, but she guides you to make your own decision and own it in that moment. I also dig the Vinyassa or flow. It is gentle enough to take my friends who are timid to take yoga, but once again there is the option to bump it up. The flow of both reminds me of a dance. Have yet to try any classes other than Vinyassa and Ashtanga, but I dig the other clients and it feels like a great yoga community building up. Sorry if this was to rant-y, but I just truly found my passion for yoga with JRYoga. Hope this helps!

The teachers are very good with making sure you are in proper alignment which is important! Not a whole lot of spiritual chants and things like that, thank goodness. Just good yoga moves, positive atmosphere, and very consistent teaching.

There are minimal machines as expected, but all the necessities and all my favorites. There are plenty of mirrors (which is a must for me), a backroom studio, showers, lockers, and tanning beds. They even have yoga classes twice a week. The entire gym is very clean and the staff is both friendly and attentive. Even though there was only one staff working, she kept herself busy re-racking weights, wiping down equipment, manning the front desk when someone came in, etc. I am impressed and happy to make this my new gym!

Safe, affordable, super clean. Members are awesome (any bad apples would be asked to leave, but I…read morehaven't seen bad apples in 2017). You never feel threatened or "stared at"; everyone is helpful and encouraging! Best of all: yoga instructor (yoga comes with membership) -- very safe and knowledgeable! Makes lovely room for Ashtanga yoga! Tip: listen to her and don't be offended if she suggests Beginner instead of Advanced, as the Beginner class will "scale up" to harder poses, but you should know Ashtanga (for your own safety) before trying Advanced. Plus, Advanced is a real workout, too! Definitely make the time to show up when classes are scheduled, though I bet SNAP and regulars would work with you on scheduling if you really needed different times. (Yes, they're that accommodating!)
