I was hungry and not in the mood to move my vehicle from the hotel parking lot as street parking in Lexington can be a challenge. I arrived at about 9AM and the only other customers were 2 college age girls who never exchanged a word with the other since they were on their phones. I ordered a Hillel and a large coffee. The only available creamer was pumpkin spice which I'd never had in my life. What is a Hillel you ask? It was salmon, caper, onion, and cream cheese in a bagel for about 10 bucks, however either it was tasty or I was starving and would have enjoyed a spam sandwich. The college aged staff were reasonably friendly, accommodating, and my order was ready in a jiffy. The cafe is located on the campus of Washington & Lee University whose current president has a left-leaning agenda for its students. Not a bad deal for a quick meal if you're hungry. Service was quick, friendly, no fuss. The kind of place where nobody's trying too hard, which is usually when things turn out just right. The food? Lord have mercy. Every bit of it. And the atmosphere--well, it had character without trying to beat you over the head with it. That's a rare combination these days. Most places either feel like a museum or a storage unit. This one felt like the establishment wanted you to relax. And the coffee... now that was coffee. Not punishment in a cup.
