These guys were the best movers I have ever worked with, and I have used moving companies for local and long-distance moves multiple times in my life. Very quick to load and unload, never banged the wall or dropped stuff, courteous (called me "sir"), neat, and inexpensive ($150/hr for three guys and a big truck). Moving a two-bedroom apartment that I'd lived in for 10 years (and so had way more stuff than I moved in with) cost $450 (I packed). I highly recommend them. read more

Appalachian Movers was able to move me on one day from PA to MD. They had a large crew pack the truck up early in the morning. Every one of the workers were great and had a great attitude. They all seemed to really care about my things and making sure it got there in one piece. The unloading crew consisted of 3 people and was great as well and did everything so fast and well. They asked where things were supposed to go and worked hard. Couldn't be happier with the workers. My only gripe is that I wasn't told that they were going to stop in Philly before coming to my place. I think that should be communicated to the customer prior to the move so the customer can plan accordingly, but that wasn't a big enough issue to take any stars away. Found Appalachian Movers through a Google Search after the moving company referred to me by AAA quoted a ridiculously over-the-top estimate for a less-than 200 mile move. Tom (the owner, I believe) helped schedule my move from PA to MD and I could not be more pleased with how everything went. His crew arrived the morning of the move, as scheduled, got my stuff loaded onto the truck, and drove down to Maryland same-day. Throughout every step, Tom and his crew were courteous, professional, and provided exemplary service. Even my new neighbors commented on the high-quality effort and professionalism displayed by the crew as they moved me into my new apartment. Total cost ended up coming under what I had hoped to pay when I began planning the move and was well worth every penny for how smoothly the transition was made by this business. Appalachian Movers took extra care and time to ensure our furniture arrived without any damage. They were very flexible, working around the holidays and our own hectic schedules. Tom answered every time we called leading up to the move. He gave us his cell # to ensure we were on track with arrangements, and recommended several methods to save money, even when it meant purchasing moving supplies from a different company and boxing things up ourselves. His crew was courteous and effective, taking extra measures to avoid tracking dirt anywhere, or even leaving a clue they had been in the house. Highly recommended! They were very accommodating when it came to the time and date we wanted. We moved from Scranton, PA to Baltimore, MD. They came right on time at 8AM and had us all moved in by 4PM. They came fully prepared with everything we could have needed. The crew was great and took extra care to make sure none of our furniture was scratched or damaged. They wrapped everything and loaded the truck very efficiently. They busted a piece off a bookcase and squashed a heavy wire basket with wheels I use for shopping because I am handicapped. They threw me 20.00 bucks for ruining the bookcase and said they would fix my shopping basket, they took it, I never got it back, even though they repeatedly assured me I would. To make matter worse I can't afford a new one. They purchased this cheap thing, the wheels fall off and it is half the size. The wheels on the front that fall off are so small that when they hit a pebble they come to a stop. They are horrible, don't use them. They could care less about the condition of your furniture or how it arrives. I guess because the move wasn't big money for them and I was just one elderly woman. read more

As an active-duty member, I move a lot -15 times in 16 years to be precise, so when I write about Tom and his company, please know I have some experience with moving. I moved from Boalsburg, PA to Pensacola, FL, and this move ranks as the best move I've ever experienced. From the start Tom and his wife were ABSOLUTELY professional as they walked my property, gauging how much stuff I had and estimating the move cost. By the time they left, I felt completely at ease with the move and cautiously excited that, for once, I'd move with no issues. They weren't the least expensive company I interviewed, but that professionalism and poise was worth the additional cost. Moving day started in force, and Tom and his wife were both assisting their team with the packing. Speaking with every member of their team, I was impressed how every one of them enjoyed working for the company. By the time the pack out was complete, I honestly felt I had close friends helping me move versus hiring a faceless moving company. Everything was packed and loaded with exceptional care and dedication -including a $2000 hand-blown crystal glasses and goblets from Egypt. As with any small company, there are going to be problems to overcome, and this move was no exception. About a day before delivery, Tom called me personally and stated that the truck carrying the majority of my things had engine problems but was being repaired about 6 hours away. Tom offered 2 options for me: 1, they could rent a truck and transfer my things from one truck to the other. 2, Tom and his wife would personally deliver what was in the 2nd (smaller) truck, and they would deliver the remainder a few days later. I chose the 2nd. While I (obviously) wanted all my things, but the thought of doing a full shift from 1 truck to another wasn't appealing to me. Also, this additional cost (in addition to the engine repairs, etc) would cost Tom and his company. The company's bottom line may not have been my concern, but that professionalism and relationship helped me make the decision. These are good people who were willing to work with me. I was more than happy to do the same. When everything arrived, Tom hired local people to assist he and his wife in offloading my 4 tons of things. Just like at pack out, Tom's crew wore booties and put down paper mats to limit dirt and scraping the wooden floor. They set up my bedroom, living room, and dining room. Best part was that NOTHING was missing, damaged, or even smudged! Tom and his team worked hard to do it right the first time, and they succeeded. If I ever move back to Pennsylvania (or even the surrounding states), Tom will be my first call. read more

To begin with, APPALACHIAN MOVER did not respond to my complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I hired Appalachian Movers to move my daughter within State College, PA, and things turned out quite poorly. My deal with Appalachian was for three men and a truck for $145 an hour with a three hour minimum, plus $16 per wardrobe box. It took an hour and a half (of the three hour minimum that I paid for) to move my daughter's belongings out of one location and drive less than a half mile to unload at the new location. I had over 30 boxes and a dozen contractor bags labeled for five rooms, and they dumped these items in the correct rooms, but the items were placed at the mover's convenience, and placed helter-skelter so that you could not move about. I asked the lead crew member to stay and help out. He said, "Sorry bud, once we move your stuff off the truck, we're done." When the owner Tom DiLella returned my call to me four days later (from my two calls), he had nothing but excuses and in my opinion, was looking for any way out. When I contracted the move, I told Tom DiLella that we needed three to four wardrobe boxes in which to put my daughter's clothes. Instead, his men show up with who knows how many wardrobe boxes, but only one cross-bar to support the clothes. I did not watch them pack the boxes, but I later come to find out that they dumped 10' of clothing into 4' of wardrobe boxes (TWO BOXES). This is ridiculous, as the clothes were tossed into the bottom of the box with the crossbar (plus having a fully loaded crossbar) and clothes were dumped into the other box (without the crossbar), top to bottom. What better way to raise your profits as a mover, especially when you know you are not going to unpack the boxes. * Every mover that I have used in the past (quite many) loads and unloads wardrobe boxes in a professional manner, as a matter of course. In this case, one guy dumped the clothing in the boxes in probably 10 minutes, based on examination. Then, Appalachian did not unpack the clothing and hang it up in customary fashion. What makes this worse, they broke two expensive plastic and metal hangers that are worth $2 each or more, and I now had to unpack the boxes which took over an hour or more because of the tangled mess of hangers and clothing. In other words, I spent an hour or more unpacking clothing that should have been in four wardrobe boxes that any other mover would have unpacked as customary. This is an hour of work that I contracted with Appalachian Movers to do as part of the contract. No wonder they wanted to leave the scene before I saw the mess they left me. I cannot really explain what happened from Appalachian's end. Was it a rogue employee or is it about the company? Given the response of the owner, Tom DiLella, I can only conclude that the owner has no problem of using its advantage over "occasional customers." * With regard to leaving the boxes and bags all over the place, the simple fact is that I paid for three hours of work and Appalachian movers refused to do any more than half that by straightening out the mess they left. I have no problem living with a three hour minimum, but I do have a problem when the mover refuses to do the customary services that movers do as part of a job, especially when paid for. Now, I refer you back to the excuse that Tom DiLella used for being late. Which is it Tom? How can you do these normal services for another customer and deny them to me and walk off the job? read more
