Nothing is more American than bluegrass music. Having roots in Celtic and American jazz, bluegrass developed in the isolated mountainous regions of the eastern US. What resulted was the highest octane music in the world. In the 40's and 50's this was the heavy metal genre of it's day. Every major country/western musician plays bluegrass because if they can handle the licks and riffs in bluegrass, they can handle anything that comes their way in country. If you want to learn more about bluegrass, don't go to a museum, go to the local bluegrass music store and just hang and talk to the owners or regular customer Just say you want to learn about bluegrass and they will talk to you until the cows come home and out again. When I had more time on my hands, I played bass for a bluegrass band in LA and hung around McCabes in Santa Monica. I had to quit the band when I moved back east, but didn't have the time to start with a new band. Going on instinct, I quickly found Appalachian Bluegrass Shoppe. The people there are extremely friendly. They will take the time to understand what you want and get it for you. Or they love to just gab about bluegrass. They have a wide assortment of new and vintage instruments. Remember that old uncle or grandfather that had this Martin acoustic guitar he bought in the 50's? If in good shape now, that can pay for half of a condo in Washington DC. If you ever wanted to learn more about bluegrass and the roots of our country, stop by the Appalachian Bluegrass Shoppe and sit for a spell. If you call ahead and come on a night when they have one of their weely jam sessions, you could listen to the music live for free. SHOP HOURS Monday through Thursday -10 a.m. till 9 p.m. Fridays 10 a.m. till 6:30 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. till 5 p.m.

Emory worked on my J200 Gibson 12 string, prepping it for me to sell it and I couldn't be happier with the work performed on my instrument. Thorough, honest, diligent, fair and perfect are words I will use to express my satisfaction in the job you did on my "baby." Thank you so much for what you did, the time you spent with me and the way tou, your wife and staff treated me. I felt like I was THE man when dealing with you. Will be back!!

    Adorable ukulele.

This is my new go to shop for all my violin needs. I was greeted as soon as I walked through the door, and found exactly what I came here for very quickly. They have the best ukulele selection I've ever seen and gorgeous mandolins. The staff is friendly and the selection, given the size of the shop, was quite impressive.

I had purchased a Ukulele from the Bill's down the street and had that for a couple years until I learned guitar.

I love this bookstore with the tucked away bar upstairs. The selection of books should cover…read morealmost every age and genre. I especially enjoyed the travel and wine centered books. The bar is quaint and cute. Not a vast menu, but it's not needed! Love the local select beers that are available although I opted for the gin cocktail. Very reasonably priced. It's very quiet during the day, quite a few there to read and work in a quiet space and it serves that purpose well. I've also visited in the evening before where a book club meeting was ending and a D&D campaign was beginning and it was quite lively, but still a great vibe. I've had 2 visits now with many more to come. Store workers were super friendly and greeting me upon entering and looking around. Bartender was friendly as well and seemed to enjoy engaging with the guests.

I stopped in to shop at Backwater Books when I was exploring Old Ellicott City with my husband and…read moresome of his relatives when they were in town. The store was a great surprise. It's larger than I thought it might be - two stories. While not the best stocked bookstore I've ever been to, Backwater offers more than just books. It has a bar upstairs and it's set up for live music as well. It has some great seating for opening a book to read a few pages to see if you want to take it home. The customer service was great as well. Folks in Ellicott City are lucky to have this amazing bookshop. I'll definitely be back in the future (hopefully for a shop, drink, and music next time)!
