Apna Bazar is an ethnic grocery store specifically targeting Indian food and spices, hell spawn hot sauces, Indian curry seasonings and all food staples including Basmati rice of Indian cultural cuisine of a large selection. It is clean and wide aisles when browsing. I came here specifically for fresh fruits and tomatoes due to the very reasonable price and quantity without economic shrinkflation or compromise. Inflation and agflation 2023 era shrinkage greatly affects my household as working families. This grocery store does offers limited pots, pans and cooking utensils but do NOT expect to be high quality pots for avid cooks/ chefs as Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table, or Calphalon standard quality. There are also mainstream American frozen foods, juice, soda of standard American brand names available. Customer service is, indeed, nonexistent and albeit dismissive, curt, mired in disgruntled melancholy behavioral appearance exhibited and transparent to customers. Return policy is absolutely deplorable egregiously inferior and excessively poor standards of a traditional brick and mortar business. I agree with previous Yelpers with the excessively poor female cashiers' customer service and stolid dismissive behaviors. They do, indeed, exhibit rude scowl belligerent looks to customers as serial thieves. Ok let's get a couple of things out of the way, shall we? 1) Yes, the employees are largely unhelpful if you're looking for something specific, and the cashiers barely even acknowledge your presence. Unless you speak the same language they do and then they'll bend over backwards to help you. (I do not) 2) Yes, the frozen food is barely frozen (likely to save on their electrical bill by turning them lower than they should be). Here's how to deal with the above mentioned points: 1) If you're unfamiliar with the groceries there, thankfully most of it is in English so you can read it/look it up on Google, whatever. I tend to wait until another shopper is in the aisle and "looks friendly" enough to ask his/her advice---most of the time, people are happy to speak about their culture/food and welcome questions or give advice---yes, even in NY lol 2) Reach into the freezers far enough to grab the box/bags from the back which are much more frozen than the ones nearer the front. General tips: Go early because the place fills up quick. Don't take a shopping cart (use a basket instead) because the aisles are somewhat narrow. There is a price scanner in a couple of the aisles that you are welcome to use if needed. AMAZINGLY large selection and VERY GOOD prices!! Great selection of Indian groceries and products. Open 24 hrs.. which is a good thing. Clean and well organized They also sell Indian sweets . Try not to ever go on a weekend because its always super crowded and mad busy. Recently they extended their store and made it more roomy which was a relief . The only MOST ANNOYING AND FREAKING IRRITATING thing about this place is the line to get to a cashier.. there are 5 of them on any busy day..BUT THEY DONT HAVE A LINE SYSTEM as to where to stand .. this always causes fights and arguments between the shoppers..ALWAYS !.. everytime I go there someone ends up arguing about who was ahead of who.. IF THEY would spend a few bucks and get barrier extensions to form lines ..?. It would be heaven ! Another problem is GOOD LUCK FINDING PARKING on a weekend on liberty avenue .. its next to impossible. But apart from that? First of all the cashiers are very rude. I thought it was only with me but now I see other reviews confirming it. Second of all, they just lost me as a customer today. I bought a few groceries including a gallon of milk. I paid for everything and walked home. Then I realize that I'm missing the milk and she included it in the receipt. I went back to claim it and the cashiers told me that if I forgot it it was my fault. Please make sure to check your bags n receipts. They never gave me the milk and she just robbed me my $3.29. I come here mostly for their tea (they have a large assortment of them), their sugar, and their frozen Palak Paneer. I like the overall atmosphere, i.e. the Indian music and the Lord Krishna photographs. However, this place can get congested, especially the lines for the cashier. You have to come here early or late to avoid waiting. Some of their practices are unhygienic. I once saw a worker here drop some potatoes on the floor only to pick them up and put them right back on the shelf. Some of their jaggery products have dirt and debris because they are poorly stored. One time, I once purchased 1 box of sugar, 2 Palak Paneers, and 1 box of Tea. The cashier, however, charged me for 2 boxes of sugar, 2 Palak Paneers, and 1 box of Tea, for a total of $18 (giving me $2 change). When I left the store, I noticed, so I immediately returned to explain that I got overcharged $3.99 for a box of sugar that I had not purchased. Now by itself, these sort of mistakes are fine. Cashiers are human, and during peak hours, they may honestly miscalculate. My dissatisfaction, however, is with the cashier's reaction to me. She was extremely rude, tossing the goods around the counter; and she tried to swindle me by intentionally misreading the receipt and arguing that she had not overcharged me. When she finally acknowledged her mistake, she wouldn't even give me my money back. She told me to take another box of sugar since she had already cashed it. I buy my rice from this store exclusively, simply because it's the best place to get an assortment and deals on basmati rice. The produce here is also very fresh with decent prices, depending on what's in season. The tea selection is fairly large of you like many types of South Asian tea types, leaf, satcheled, or powdered. They have quite a bit. Only reason they lose a star, is for the rudeness of the customers and daytime cashiers (females). The cashiers are usually a bit on the rude side though and tend to go quickly as possible and make mistakes. Be sure to check your receipts. Not just the return policy but customer service is HORRIBLE. I understand if you buy perishable item you can't return it but non perishable item like pots and pans should have at least a week of return. I bought a pot which was not a bargain, I would have gotten similar size pot better quality for the same price in Bed Bath. The pot turned out to be very BAD QUALITY my food got burned. I called four days after I bought it to see if I can return or at least store credit. I had the receipt as well. I was told they don't return. i was clearly told customer satisfaction is not there concern. I hope one of there competitors open up in this area so they can improve there standard. My mom went here today and when she paid they didn't give her enough change back, when she tried to complain they simply dismissed her and refuse to give her the correct change.
