Since first discovering Aphrodite Oysters in 2023, we have recommended them to multiple friends and we also used them again for a friend's birthday party. This time we chose the delivery package that included 4 dozen east coast oysters and #2 shrimp cocktail + sashimi salmon. An employee delivered the items and setup everything as well shucked the oysters! The setup included cute trays, sauces, platters and a bucket for the shells. We were so excited to have oysters at our wedding but hiring Aphrodite Oysters was the worst decision we could have made for our wedding. Kristen never rendered the services we paid for and stopped responding when we requested a refund, resulting in an unnecessary several year-long legal dispute. Our wedding was originally scheduled at the start of Covid, requiring us to reschedule our wedding several times which was incredibly stressful for us, and I imagine all of our vendors, as well. Our other vendors were completely transparent about their rescheduling fees but Kristen Jordan, the owner of Aphrodite Oysters, was not, asking us to "budget for a 20% gratuity" in lieu of a rescheduling fee. When Kristen sent an email informing us that we were delinquent on a rescheduling fee that we were not informed of, I asked for clarification and referred her to her voicemail asking us to budget for 20% gratuity. Rather than clarifying or discussing the matter, Kristen informed me that she went ahead and charged my card $200 and stopped responding to my emails. I informed Kristen that if I didn't hear back from her, I would need to dispute this charge as we had not discussed this rescheduling fee. Only after I disputed the charge several days later, Kristen emailed me stating that she would only serve our wedding if we signed a non-disparagement agreement. We told her we would sign a non-disparagement agreement if she terminated our contract and refunded our money. Kristen said she would think about it and get back to us but she never did. We reached out to Kristen several times via email with no response and received a termination of contract in the mail four months later (less than a month before our wedding date) with no mention of refunding our money. I emailed Kristen several more times and left her a voicemail requesting a refund with no response. 18 days before our wedding, Kristen left me a voicemail saying she would still like to work our wedding. I told her we already had another vendor and asked again for a refund but she did not respond. Our wedding date came and went with no word from Kristen so I emailed her again, as well as sent her a certified letter informing her that we would need to file a small claim for our refund if we didn't hear back from her. Another *nine* months went by with no response from Kristen so we finally filed a small claim against her that was to be handled over Zoom, as we lived out of state. Several days later, Kristen's assistant called to ask if we would attend mediation and when we denied this request, Kristen made a counter suit against us despite having already been paid in full and never having rendered services to us and requested to have an in-person jury trial so that we would be forced to travel across the country where our expenses would likely exceed our small claim. After one postponement, Kristen suggested we both drop our suits and we agreed as we now have a baby making travel more difficult and just wanted this behind us. We have documentation to support all of our claims in this review. We were very surprised to see that Aphrodite Oysters has such positive reviews and really wish we could have had the same experience as everyone else. We are deeply disappointed that Kristen was unwilling to operate with integrity and to work with us to resolve our dispute swiftly and amicably. read more

Good morning Kristen, Thank you for your email. I want to start by stating clearly: an honest review should not prevent an honest refund. As a business owner, I'm sure you understand that withholding a refund because of a negative review could be considered retaliatory and deceptive, especially under consumer protection laws like the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act and the federal Consumer Review Fairness Act. I do have the ability to amend or remove a review, but a refund should not be contingent upon that. I waited over 24 hours after the event before posting my review, giving you time to respond privately. When I received no reply, I shared my experience publicly. I've since noticed that another client had a strikingly similar issue just three months ago, which unfortunately affirms a concerning pattern. I originally booked you over a year ago for our wedding and transferred the contract for a different event and did so based on the strength of your reviews at that time (April 2024). But as you mentioned, staffing issues have made it difficult to maintain your standards, and that may be something to reflect on operationally. When we spoke at 9:27 a.m. on June 6, 2025, about 30 hours before catering arrival, you reassured me that your staff was fully capable of executing the services the chef was originally scheduled to provide. That reassurance was the only reason I agreed to proceed without the chef. Unfortunately, what was delivered fell far short of what I paid for: No buffet setup was handled by your staff, my coordinator, her assistant, and my assistant set up and replenished the buffet throughout the night. Your team did not bring appropriate serving utensils for the main courses, which we had to make up for with my personal items. Your team remained in the corner for most of the event and seemed noticeably uncomfortable, as confirmed by several guests. The raw bar was not fully executed, including the omission of the sashimi, which I had specifically ordered. I was not notified about the larger snow crab claws not being available. Your note about the staff being overwhelmed is not something I hold against them. I've worked in the catering industry, and I understand the challenges. This is not a reflection on them, but rather a reflection of the lack of preparation and support they received from your company. As the business owner, the responsibility lies with you, not with the staff you put in this position. Given that much of what was agreed upon was not delivered, and in some cases misrepresented, a partial refund is not only appropriate, it's expected. I paid for a full-service raw bar and chef-prepared items, and those services were not fulfilled. The fact that the possibility of a refund is now being reconsidered because I shared my experience is deeply concerning. Given that multiple services were not delivered or misrepresented, I believe at least a partial refund is warranted. A few possible areas to consider, but not limited to, include: The invoice from Canje, since I had to source main-course items myself due to the last-minute cancellation of your chef. The sashimi, which was completely omitted from service. The chef-prepared hot items that were never made, including the beef skewers and goat cheese tarts. Any equipment or staffing-related service that was included in your quote but not fulfilled at the event. I am open to resolution, but I do expect you to honor the original terms of our agreement and offer a refund for the services that were not provided. I truly hoped to have a wonderful experience with your company, and I would have preferred to avoid this situation altogether. Lastly, please understand that word of mouth is much stronger than a Google review. I'm part of a large professional network and social community that often books vendors for events. I would have loved nothing more than to recommend your business. But as it stands, my experience, and how it has been handled, makes that impossible. Again, I'm open to a fair resolution.
