The restaurant was maybe 80% full, but our servers couldn't find the time to check on us. We had a bottle of wine served, and maybe 15 minutes later needed more wine. We finally got our server's attention and we got more wine. Once our entrees came out, our server and wine guy never came back to our table. We even told them we would like more wine but they never came back with it. We would've bought 4-5 bottles of wine that evening had someone come back to check on us. Instead, we just sipped our waters until we were ready to leave. The food was honestly mediocre all around. The lamb was overcooked and inedible, the eggplant dish was over salted, etc. We liked our dips platter, but it came with a tiny bowl of pita and like three pieces of celery for $24, so most of the dips went uneaten. If someone had asked if we needed more pita or vegetables we would have said yes, even if we had to pay for it. But nobody did. I could go into more details (mansplaining and some belittling all around), but it's not really important. We realized there are restaurants in Chapel Hill that we'd rather visit in the future. The hostess tried to find me a glass that wasn't stained but never returned. I ended up passing on water. I would suggest improving the glasses by removing the stains or getting new ones. I would also recommend a better clean-up of the seating after each guest. I saw a few crumbs. Parking was effortless. A parking deck is right across the street. It's free on the weekends.

The person beside me had the good sense to ask for a to-go container, and I'm still kicking myself for not thinking of the same before they whisked my plate away. Caramel: Honestly, they had me at corn. But this was such a savory, rich, comforting bite--the kind of food that just warms the soul. Lamb: I was a little apprehensive about lamb covered in a tuna and anchovy sauce (tonnato), but somehow it really worked. It was one of those unexpected combinations that you just couldn't stop eating. And the lamb itself was incredibly tender. Overall, such an excellent event. Christian used Woodford Reserve bourbon and Campari rather than Aperol so it had a slightly less bitter taste and was a lovely auburn color. The food menu was very interesting, with lots of items we've never tried. We ordered caesar salad with anchovies, green beans in garlic-soup sauce, panella (a chick-pea and cream cheese dish), and seasoned French fries. It was all yummy and delivered together. The outside is pretty nondescript except Mothers & Sons on the windows. Upon entering, Alimentari gives a great casual but nice feel as a combination cafe and bistro type impression. I was greeted quickly and cheerfully with water and menus as the server took my drink order to start. I decided on this visit to go with the frittata with prosciutto, caramelized onions, and Caciocavallo cheese. I liked this choice a lot, perfect portion and delicious but I wish I had more of the prosciutto flavor coming through. Throughout this meal, my servers were very positive, helpful, and always made sure I had what I needed. I decided to investigate the pastries items I saw on their bar. There are pinwheels they have on a plate they offer as a free treat, I sampled one and liked it a lot. The large cookies under the glass cake cover caught my eye. My servers described the polenta and lime cookies that were one of the selections and I had to go with those with some coffee, as well as trying one of their plain biscuits from the menu. The biscuit was large, still warm, and baked perfection (not overbaked or underdone). I would not call it a strictly "Southern style biscuit" but it was delicious and I think I would love one here with sausage and egg on future visits. I could have done with less salt on the top though, again a small thing to me. The polenta and lime cookies were a great surprise, I enjoyed these a lot with my coffee and so glad I tried them...very soft and flavorful with just a hint of crunch here and there from the polenta.
