Hiring AP Paving & Masonry has been one of the biggest and most expensive mistakes I've made as a business owner. I paid over $51,000 for a retaining wall and parking lot expansion because my salon parking lot was eroding into the stream on my property. Instead of ending up with a safe, professionally completed project, I was left with a parking lot that failed inspection, continues to erode, appears unsafe, and will now require even more money to repair correctly.
The problems started immediately. The owner insisted on starting the project in the middle of winter while the ground was frozen and covered in snow. I questioned whether this was appropriate because other contractors had advised me to wait until spring. I was repeatedly assured there would be no problem.
After paying a $30,000 deposit, work began. Shortly afterward, I asked whether the required permits had been obtained. To my disbelief, the owner told me he assumed I had gotten the permit. I'm a hair stylist, not a contractor. Every contractor I've ever hired has handled permits themselves, and I even texted him explaining that I had no idea how to obtain one. I also told him I was worried my salon could get into trouble with the township.
A few days later, the township issued a Stop Work Order.
Because the project was started without permits, their equipment, materials, and piles of stone sat in my already limited parking lot for months while I dealt with the permitting process. I was also forced to hire a structural engineer to prepare drawings before permits could even be approved--an expense that could have been avoided had the project been handled correctly from the start.
Throughout the project, the professionalism was incredibly disappointing. The owner repeatedly told me he wished he had never taken the job, said he had considered walking away from it, blamed the project for missing a family vacation with his wife and children, and constantly talked about how much money he was losing.
After only one day of work, despite already receiving my $30,000 deposit, he texted me saying all of the money had been spent, that he was beginning to spend his own money, and that he would need additional money from me before completing the project. As the customer paying over $51,000, I should never have been made to feel responsible for my contractor's finances.
When work finally resumed after permits were approved, they completed what they considered the project in roughly two days. Before the township inspector had even looked at the work, the owner insisted on being paid in full. I told him I wasn't comfortable paying before inspection because I wanted to make sure the project was safe and completed properly. He repeatedly reassured me everything was fine and said he needed the money to pay his employees.
The project failed inspection.
The township inspector informed me that the ends of the parking lot had not been properly capped. The parking lot continues to erode, the stone is uneven and poorly compacted, the lot is not level, and construction debris--including broken block, bags of concrete, and metal rods--was thrown into the stream on my property.
When I asked AP Paving & Masonry to correct the problems, they refused unless I paid them another $30,000. When I explained that both the township inspector and another contractor agreed the work was incomplete and unsafe, I was essentially told, "Then have them do it."
As a business owner myself, I understand mistakes happen. What matters is how a company responds. Instead of taking responsibility, I was left with a failed inspection, an incomplete project, ongoing erosion, safety concerns for my guests and employees, and the expense of hiring others to correct work I had already paid over $51,000 to have done correctly.
I will be posting photos of the workmanship, the erosion, the debris left in the stream on my property, and screenshots of the text messages so others can make an informed decision.
If you're considering AP Paving & Masonry, ask who is responsible for permits, ask whether they'll stand behind their work if it fails inspection, and get every promise in writing. I wish I had. I would never hire this company again. read more
