I stumbled upon this record store during my trip to Austin when my friend and I were walking around the outdoor vintage marketing going on. I was so pleasantly surprised to see Antone's Record Shop in the midst of it all! They've got a massive selection of records, all organized and labeled properly. Very cool music shop located near the University of Texas. You'll be listening to good music while you shop, you can count on it. They mostly have vinyl records but their CD collection is pretty strong, especially for local Austin artists. I didn't check the vinyl prices but for used cds, many or most were $5 or less. If you plan on coming here, the one thing you need to know is that it is on busy Guadalupe Street with about a dozen parking spaces out front total for the entire strip center, and another dozen off to the side. Parking is difficult in the area and if you park across the street, you will get towed, and there is no public bathroom here. The business next-door is called the Leopard Lounge in case you like vintage clothing to go with your vintage vinyl. With that said, they do have an impressive amount of vinyl on display, including a large number of 45s. But that's not all, they have a large number of cassette tapes and tons of CDs. At the rear store, they have something you rarely see, and that is a large selection of old 78's. Inside, you'll also find a collectors bin of high dollar vinyl, posters, music books and Antone's T-shirts. Their selection of new and old vinyl is enough to bring any true collector through their door. The only thing that is absent here is vintage stereo equipment. If you have any vintage vinyl you're willing to part with, they will certainly purchase it from you. Plenty of photos to entice you through the door. read more

As a record collector I've found some gems in Antones, but the selection isn't very vast as far as pop & indie. Staff is usually very nice :) I specifically look for Arabic records, and the Middle East section usually never has anything. Know circulation for that stuff can be hard, but I usually find some kind of selection at other shops. Fun to look through sometimes but not in my regular record store rotation as much. read more

Probably my favorite environment of the close to 10 stores I visited while visiting Austin. They have a ton of great titles, but the prices are a little high for me on both the new and used. If you're looking for something specific I feel this is the place for you. Plenty of classics and really well sorted and categorized. I had a hard time browsing, maybe things were too separated by name or something? I felt like I needed to know what I was looking for in advance for some reason. I stumbled around looking from my list but I ended up not finding any of my want list there. So I left empty handed, and I can't entirely explain why. Awesome shop and great staff. I was warmly welcomed in and shown around the store. They have a lot of items so take your time and don't be afraid to ask for help. I did also notice a large 45 rpm selection as well. I did appreciate the well organized classical section although I opted for some punk in today's visit. A great record store with a huge collection. They also put on special events that are a "must" for any music fan. Owner Mike Buck was the drummer for the Fabulous Thunderbirds, one of the best live bands in history, so he knows his stuff!!! Great store, absolutely abismal service. You know that record store that John Cusack owns in High Fidelity. Imagine that store in south Austin but with a way shittier staff. I approached the wish.com looking "Winona Ryder" employee asking for a pricing on a Toots and the Maytails album playing, she shushed me because she was counting plastic sleeves, then after 10 minutes gave me a price. Told this joke of an employee I'd take the record But continued to browse. Subsequently saw this shamble of a person fanning themselves with the record sleeve I was about to purchase. Antone's record shop has grown out of the night club and sits strategically located on Guadalupe, near the University and a cadre of young vinyl fans who have caused a resurgence of popularity for buying record albums. Antone's has rows and rows of them, and they also stock a hearty collection of CDs and 45s. Most of their CD and LP inventory is pre-owned, but there are new ones, as well. Music is organized by genre and there are multiple sections for Texas artists, so you may find some local gems here that you'd have a hard time finding elsewhere. They occasionally host live record releases for Texas artists, as well. They're locally owned by Texas musicians, so shopping here is one way to help keep Austin weird and support your local music scene. read more

Antone's Record Shop is in a small strip mall on Guadalupe. I went here with my husband two weeks ago. There's parking right up front, but we walked there from UT that day. It's a small, local record shop with a great selection of used vinyl - blues, jazz, and local Texan artists. We were there for almost an hour combing through records. You will see that you have your local customers who visit the shop, and the passion and respect that people have for music here. Only negative was that - and this could have been because the guy had an off day - the cashier failed to give back my hubby his change. He'd handed the guy a $20 to pay for a $9 used record, and the guy just gave him the purchase. Luckily my husband noticed it before he left the store, but the cashier was a little absent minded. During the transaction, he'd been talking to someone who stopped by to sell off records, and I guess he was just really into the conversation about music. He apologized and was nice about it, but - just a tip for anywhere you go - remember to always check your change. read more

This place of the white selection of vintage albums and 45s. I know longer have record player so I decided to sell my 45s that have been well loved. I felt I received a fair amount for my records. The staff made it a very enjoyable experience. Definitely recommend this place! read more

This is the ultimate place for record collectors. Its selection of records far exceeds Waterloo's and it reminds me of the kind of record store you'd find in New York or Providence, RI back in the 70's. One of my roommates is an avid record collector and he was in heaven when he walked in, mostly because they started playing some really old blues he really liked. The sales associates are also really friendly and there are pretty cool posters for sale throughout the store. Antone's is a cool, hip place to pick up some rare or hard to find CD's, vinyl and other cool stuff. They have large collections of jazz, country and even local stuff. They do have some new rock/pop albums but they keep it pretty limited and try to stick to their roots. They do buy and sell used CD's so you can get rid of some of the junk you don't need anymore and you can pick up some decent selections pretty damn cheap. The staff is very knowledgeable when it comes to their bread and butter (Jazz, Americana, country, local, etc.) but they can be kind of stumped if you ask them about too much of the new stuff. The location is convenient to those shopping on the Drag and there are a lot of great places to eat nearby to satisfy your hunger once you are done shopping. read more

Stopped by Antone's because I needed to by a empty CD jewel case. Cool vibe, lots of old records, lots of character. The owner(?) was talking to a customer when I came in and having an in-depth discussion about music. They don't sell CD jewel cases, but he gave me one for free, and said "come back and buy a CD from us sometime." I am moving out of Austin in a week but I figured a Yelp review is probably a good way to thank them! So, five stars for a great atmosphere and a damn helpful customer attitude! read more

Legendary! The record collection is amazing. Such vast amounts of music styles. And the history is amazing.

Antone's is one of the best record stores in Austin. Period. Let's make one thing clear from the start: their selection of jazz, blues, soul & garage rock records is unsurpassed in the whole city. But this is not where you go to find that Organized Konfusion original press or a Napalm Death 7". If you're looking for punk, rap, or variants thereon, Antone's has it, but you're not gonna find the best selection here. This is the spot when you realize you only have one Thelonious Monk album (you really do need them all), or that you don't have any Muddy Waters (for shame!). Everything is remarkably well-priced; you've really got to dig to find something higher than $25. Even their dollar bin is full of beat-up-looking but great-sounding stuff. Last summer I spent a week on the floor just digging through those tasty dollar crates and walked away with my collection significantly increased at a ridiculously low price. There's a massive reference shelf behind the counter, but the staff doesn't need to consult it very often: they seem to know damn near everything. Spend enough time here and you might pick up some knowledge along with yer vinyl. read more

During a recent weekender to Austin specifically to shop for records, we finally made our way to Antone's to see what all the fuss is about. It's located near campus and it's a bit north of where all the action is but totally walkable if you're spending the evening out on Guadalupe and decide you want to take home some records at the end of the night. The store isn't huge but it has quite a bit of selection and it's focus is clearly on the music of of the 60s, 70s, 80s. If you're looking for the latest Mumford and Sons album, you should probably go elsewhere (also expand your horizons!) but if you're looking for some classic rock, jazz, rockabilly, and local Texas artists, you're more than likely to walk away with something cool but you'll have to do some digging. I walked away with a completely random first press REM - Monster still in it's original packaging and I have no idea how that happened but I'm glad that it did. That alone made my trip worth it. Once I've had a few more opportunities to visit and dig, I'm sure i'll be back with an even higher rating. If you haven't already checked it out, give it a shot! read more

Sadly, the selection is picked over and there is very little to get excited about. Every artist I tried to find had a name marker, but it was empty. The "New Arrivals" were all "meh." I have a feeling that the staff gets first pick...I heard them talking about the newest albums that just came in, and the ones they got. I know it's part of the "employee rights" thing...I'm not against it. I'm just passing along that if you want Jefferson Starship or Olivia Newton John, the employees won't be picking through those, and this is your place. There are so many other amazing vinyl stores in Austin, and with better prices. And it's nice that the owner cares enough to respond...that's a rare gift. However, I know what I heard, and the discussion took place at the "New Arrivals" display, and the employees were discussing buying an album for themselves from the display...and the extended conversation left no doubt in my mind that they cherry pick. Still have nothing against it...employees should own the merch they sell. It's just fair warning to those of us "not in the loop." But fair dues on the sale...that might be why there was little to choose from. read more

If you're into country/rockabilly/Texas music, you can't do better than Antones. If you're into new releases, don't waste your time. Unfortunately for Antones, I'm in the latter category. I enjoyed browsing what they did have in my preferred genres, but I found the general organization somewhat confusing, and as a savvy veteran of combing through used vinyl, that shouldn't happen. I'm sure there's plenty of people who love and adore this place, but as an indie rock loving music snob, it wasn't what I was looking for in a vacation record store. read more

I'm going to be the first to admit I'm a vinyl snob. Cd's only sound good to people because the record industry had us listening to cassettes before. So when you played your CD of "Back in Black", you were thunderstruck compared to listening to a third generation copy on a 90 minute Maxell. OK, enough snobbing. Antone's Records specializes in vinyl, specifically vintage blues, R & B and soul. If you want to learn about the early days of rock n roll and find out where the music you grew up listening to came from, this is a good place to start learning. If you are already educated in those styles, they have a great selection and you probably will find something that has been missing from your collection. If you collect 45's they have plenty of those as well. Being a big fan of soul and blues, I have to be careful every time I come here so that I'm not spending all the money I owe the electric company. No electricity, no turntable. read more

What can I say? I've been coming into Antone's Records for well over 25 years! We used to buy tickets for Antone's Club, when it was across Guadalupe-it was neat to see the Artists who were playing that night inside the record shop, just visiting and hanging out. I was in the shop one time when Living Blues Magazine was there and Doug Sahm was in there talking with the magazine staff. All that said, there are some pretty rare records, especially 45s and 78s in that shop. The selection is diverse and the entire staff is super friendly and knowledge. This is my favorite place to buy vinyl in Austin. The staff is knowledgeable, but they never talk down to me (I'm relatively new to vinyl). I find their prices to be extremely reasonable. I tend to buy used LPs here, but they do have a small section of new albums, reissues, compilations, etc. I usually buy jazz, classic rock, country or soul. I'm always happy with their selection. However, I can't say anything about their punk, new-wave, hip-hop selection as I've never looked at them. All in all, it's a great place to look for some used vinyl. I like to browse through record shops every once and while but I'm by no means an expert. However I did notice that place had a stellar collection of blues, soul and early rock and roll records. The fact they Howlin' Wolf playing when I walked in was a good sign. They have decent variety, but they looked best if you were hunting for some vintage blues and r&b. read more

Antone's has been around for ages. They specialize in rock, blues, and country and have extensive selections of each + smaller sections of other genres tossed in for good measure. I've been shopping here for years, mainly for the convenience factor since I frequent Tom's Tabooley and Buffalo Exchange. I've spent a lot of $ here and the staff have always been so cool and treated me right. UNTIL RECENTLY. On (I believe) Oct 5th I stopped by, parked my car in their lot (no other cars/customers were there) and asked some pink haired, tweaked out looking chick I've never seen before if it was cool to stay parked there while I QUICKLY ran into Buffalo Exchange (their neighbor, who were out of parking spots) to pick up a dress I had on hold - before heading back to shop at Antone's. It would've taken me 5 minutes TOPS to get in n out of Buffalo. I've done this before and other staff at Antone's have been cool with it, knowing I intend to spend with them too. This chick was NOT ok with it though. She blantantly glared at me with disgust, then in the most obviously annoyed, condescending manner possible went off on some tangent about how I should go to park at Buffalo instead because their parking spots were for THEIR customers. Bitch I AM your customer. Or rather I WAS! I had $500 in my pocket that day I intended to spend with you, but after that appaling, unprofessional attitude I decided to spend elsewhere. I can't emphasize enough that there were NO other cars/customers at that time. Had it been busy I would have understood her reasoning. And I would have respected her decision had she expressed it in a NICE way. But that blatant display of assholism was enough to turn me off for good. I'll steer clear of this place from now on. Antone's embodies the Austin attitude. it's a "famous" store near campus where all the kids come and shop, and since it's been around for so long, they can do whatever they want because it's an Austin institution. Every six months I go back, expecting to find something different. Nope. The inventory remains the same, and the prices aren't enticing. The only thing I will attest to is it's wonderful selection of 80s 45s for 50 cents each. But once you find that bin and you've picked it over, it'll be a few years until you'll see something new. read more

Well I really hate to say anything because I have been coming here off and on since Antone's Records opened and have bought and enjoyed many records here, but I think certain things should not pass without comment. After spending more money than I want to think about here over the years I came in tonight and confronted DS about his occasional spontaneous angry behavior towards me and he immediately got into name-calling. I responded asking for clarification and he was speechless. I was shocked. In fact he even asked me to leave the store. On what basis? And, did he forget where the phone was? I've seen drunks come in here, be rude and wobbly, and get served anyway because they have a handful of CDs for sale. Some people are just having a bad day. If you're having a bad life though and asking everyone around you to bow to your need then you probably will eventually be disappointed when someone refuses to comply and doesn't have a clue what the heck that need is anyway. There are a lot of things which have happened here that shouldn't have but I believe we all need forgiveness at times. I am not going to make this into a comprehensive catalog. I guess a few of the employees here are very tired of dealing with customers. These folks should be avoided. I also echo TS's comment; the selection is very picked-over. Partly it is because so many resellers come here regularly to see what they can find to put on ebay, partly it is because staff gets first pick at a tiny markup over cost. I think another part of the problem is desirable pieces often are underpriced - hence the reseller traffic. On the upside if you're looking for that Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin LP then this is your place. If you're looking for Stan Getz, Chet Baker, or Bill Evans, on vinyl, then expect to come here often to score that jewel. Yes the Stan Getz is here, but it is not what you're looking for, and it is overpriced. If you are selling your records - come here, as they pay more than anyplace else in Austin. It's a nice store but staff can be a little cold or distracted, selection has too much chaff, and yeah, getting blasted when trying to solve a problem crosses the line for me. Sheesh. read more

If you have a craving for a Balfa Brothers album, Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias, Professor Longhair or any other south Louisiana musicians, you can spend all day wandering around Austin, dragging your butt into every place that even might sell a record or you can get to Antone's Records and find just what you're looking for. The prices are pretty reasonable and the vinyl is clean and in some cases, damn near pristine. The store is very well organized and the employees are really upbeat and seem to like their jobs and they won't look down on you for buying crap if that's what you want to hear. read more

This is hands down the best record shop in all of Texas. Before you dispute me, consider this. Most folks who collect records are not interested in new release's. That's not say that collectors are snobby, it's just that many have a deep understanding of the wealth of good music that was ONLY PRESSED ON VINYL and long out of print. Think about it....... Up until 2010 iTunes did not have any songs or albums from The Beatles who are easily one the top selling bands of all time. If it took all that time just to get reissued in mono, on mp3, and on CD imagine all of the other great albums out there that still haven't made it! That is not say that Antone's does not keep any new release's in stock(which they totally do) it's simply that they focus on music that is a little more difficult to find. Anyone who is fan of blues will easily be impressed by the largest selection of which I have seen available ANYWHERE, neatly organized by name, and even region! Fans of soul have a slightly smaller but equally impressive selection, especially when it comes to 7 inch singles! Local Music,Rock-A-Billy, Garage, Punk, Funk(also organized by region) Jazz, rNb, Surf, Folk, Classic Rock,Tejano,Metal, and more can all be found here. If you can't find it, they will often order it just for you! The staff is very knowledgeable and have often recommended things to me that I would have NEVER FOUND OR EVEN HEARD OF WITHOUT THEM. I feel the need to note that they only made suggestions when I asked them too, and never once pressured me to buy something. Prices are very reasonable and the shop is clean. The staff was helpful - they played an LP for me on the store system when the listening center was occupied. The selection was second only to Friends of Sound. More than any other record shop I've been to, Antone's affects a selectivity in what they carry with the knowledge of what they carry to back it up. That's not to say that any snobbery is involved--in fact, the staff is very approachable and super nice. Rather, their operation is the rare alternative that the hard core, but deliberate and parsimonious record buying crowd needs. Thrift store finds belong in thrift stores, after all. That Greatest Hits record that sold three trillion copies with three trillion cut-outs left? It's clogging the bins en masse at the dusty fleamarket or the disorganized Goodwill. Save the space at the record store for the stuff that's harder to get. Antone's is a great asset because they have a solid selection without the often fabricated collectibility factor looming that keeps a po' boy like me walking away disappointed (though they do have a "rare/collectible/shit I can't afford" selection behind the counter). I only went as a buyer, not a seller. So I have no knowledge of how fair they are when it comes to buying. They certainly seem like good peeps, though. They even let me keep my purchases there overnight since I was on foot and it was hotter than a fresh cat shit omelette outside. read more
