True to form, both restaurants share the same menu exactly (except the front covers addresses). This, the original, has recently relocated from a block south on the other side of the same street (Mission Ave). The highlight of the two "Tortuga Locas" is their barbacoa beef (chopped beef in the Mexico City slow-roasted style), available in their street tacos, crispy tacos, and enchiladas. Also available are "micheladas" (Latin America's version of a Bloody Mary, using beer instead of vodka). Oh my, what a refreshing drink...almost twice the size of a 12oz beer, in a huge frosted mug! I ordered the "3 Tacos w/ Frijoles Charros" (see menu), and a Modelo light, before learning they have Micheladas. The new location is only a couple months old, but all the furnishings are in place, and a statue of Mexico's version of Charlie Tuna stands in the lobby. The restaurant has the feel of Olvera Street in Los Angeles in the 60s... I felt right at home! 5-Stars for Barbacoa street tacos... and a michelada!

It's only one day later and I just had to go back to "Parientes" (family kinda place) to find out…read moremore about their cuisine. The discovery was 5-Stars--the "2 Chili Rellenos Combo plate". The owner-operators of Parientes hail from the state of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, 250 miles north of Mexico City, with a diverse geology of high mountain plains sloping to coastal waters. The culinary style favors coarse corn meal based dishes with rich cheeses, chili pepper forward flavors and indigenous, rustic cooking methods. So, I ordered the "rellenos" and they were the best I've ever had. The peppers appeared to be "anchos" (dried poblanos) cured in water and vinegar, then stuffed with cheese and baked, coated in a cream and corn meal sauce with a sour cream topping. It paired perfectly with a glass of horchata! This dish alone puts Parientes in the 5-Star category! I upped my rating on the third bite. (See the pic) - Scott

OK, I admit, Freddy's Kitchen doesn't sound like a Mexican restaurant. But I did a drive-by and was…read moreimpressed by the size of the building, originally a Shari's Restaurant. I also thought the prices were higher than average, gauging from the online menu. So I had to find out why there were so many cars parked out front. I noticed on the way in, a separate bar area on my right, but I sat in the main front dining room. Much of the original furniture from Shari's was quite worn and still being used. I chose to sit on a metal chair at a table--not great, but adequate. I ordered two enchiladas, a chili relleno, rice, and beans. It came with chips and salsa. Adding a beer to that meal, the total was $22. But the amount of food was way more than I could eat. (See the picture). The food was delicious and worth the price! The salsa was mild and rich in flavor. The chips were warm and crispy. A serving of Curtido (shredded cabbage, carrot, and bell pepper in a vinaigrette) was an unexpected and appreciated side garnish. As well, another garnish of tomato, bell pepper, and jalapeño was on the other side of the plate. The chicken enchilada in Verde sauce was covered with a light Mexican cheese. The pairing was delicious. The cheese enchilada did not appear to have onion in it, and the red sauce was way too thin, otherwise the flavors would've been well balanced. The chili relleno was huge, full of cheese and wrapped in egg. The Anaheim pepper as fresh tasting and full flavored. It was my favorite item. As I said, I couldn't eat the whole meal. I took half home to my wife. (See the to-go tray). She raved and said it was even better the next day. I recognized my waiter from when I lived here 15 years ago. He had worked several other restaurants, but chose Freddy's. We laughed, having both ended up here. If Freddy's Kitchen can upgrade the furniture and decor, this restaurant will become one of the mainliners--the food is that good! ----

He never checked on us nor refilled drinks. I had to wait for him to come back and ask about boxes at that time I told him about the food. He said nothing. Now the food was disappointing at best. The chips rated old and the salsa tasted like tomato sauce from a can with some beans and an onions. My wife and I ordered the pork tamales. They were awful. They took some cooked pork shoved it on top of masa then put it in the boiler. No sauce nothing. The masa was very very dry and crumbled apart. The meat was hard dry and gross. The beans were cold but also had chunks of uncooked beans. The rice had no taste. Hard to believe this place has this many great reviews. Save your money I would not waste my time or my money here.

We recognized each other from his previous position at El Agave in Wenatchee (the two restaurants are affiliated ). So I was made to feel right at home. At two months old, El Chiquito is the newest, cleanest restaurant in town--brand new facilities, equipment and furniture. Three each 52" wall-mounted televisions fill all sections of the north walk of the dining area. The menu is extensive--eight pages of entrées--what's not to like (including soups and seafood dishes). I ordered the Enchiladas Verdes ( two each), with rice, beans, garnish, sour cream, and chips and salsa--only $15.00! Like El Agave, the food is mild, full of flavor, and gentle on the American palate--happy tummy. Luiz was cooking, Jesus was waiting tables and I think he delivers.
