Los Alvarez Exxpress Latin Food is a local mom and pop spot on the corner of Gardere and Burbank next to the S&P Food Store/Chevron gas station. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect going in but what I got was a lot of warmth and comfort. This is a place for Latin locals to relax and get a bit of familiarity and good food. I dined in and ordered the Granadas Catrachas. Catrachas are traditionally known as Honduran tostadas. Los Alvarez puts their spin on it by using Granada flour to create a puff pocket and stuff it with meat, rice and cheese and serve it with encurtido (Honduran pickled vegetables). I ordered one with chicken and one with beef. The serving was huge and absolutely delicious! I was only able to eat one. That, on top of the chips and salsa and black bean dip had me full for the rest of the day! Everyone that works there is friendly and for a second you don't feel like you're in Baton Rouge. They have takeout, but there is also an adequate amount of seating so one can comfortably eat in. The menu explains each dish to the uninitiated, and there are some great combination plates. However, you could also order an appetizer and a side or two to make your own combination or to try different things. A couple of papusas and a side might make a nice option. Don't forget the authentic drinks while you are at it. There's several types of sodas you should check out. He was very nice and patient and did his best to work through the language barrier. What immediately caught our attention was the advertisement of tacos de lenguas (beef tongue) and tripas (tripe)! You know it's legit when they serve those two proteins. I highly recommend this spot! The owners are friendly and hardworking and the food is delicious. It was pretty busy around the time we came (7pm) and the food took about 20 min, but no complaints as they are working from a confined space and juggling call in orders as well as walk up orders. Their tortillas were fresh, the beef tongue was so flavorful, tender, and juicy, and the HOT SALSA was on another level! It gave me that booty hole burning spice and that's exactly what I want!!! Like the restaurant itself, the parking lot is large and can accommodate all of your parking needs. Upon entering, you'll be greeted by motifs featuring the Honduran flag and tropical colors. There's window seating, booths, or tables in abundance. Then there is the extensive menu. I'm enjoying working my way through that. Honduran food is similar to Mexican and other Central American dishes, but has its own unique dishes and flavors! There's some great uses of yucca and plantains, and the really tasty thinly sliced slaw is found as a topper on many dishes. Another great flavor is the pickled onions that are found on some dishes. Exploring this cuisine is an interesting and tasty experience that everyone should enjoy!
