This place is wonderful. The antiques are quite literally museum quality (and I would know). The staff is friendly and never push or "watch you" while at the same time love showcasing their amazing things. I'm talking furniture you only see in galleries or the homes of the finest estates. Stopped in looking for a very specific clock which, somehow, we ended up finding the most amazing one we've ever seen. The staff was very helpful and patient with us as we agonized over how we were going to ship it from IL to WA. We've worked out shipment now with the staff (Tony--thank you!) so now we just need to wait for the clock to arrive. If you're just visiting like us, this store will work with you to arrange shipment. I found their prices extremely reasonable for the quality and variety of antique items, from clocks to paintings to furniture. Maribel and Jessica were incredibly helpful and informative, never influencing my decision in any way. Just got done with my first purchase and second visit to this place, and I recommend it. I also would urge those seriously interested in Chicago's highest-end antiques to disregard other reviews. I've been doing antique shopping in Chicago for 2 years now, and I can confidently say this is the highest-end antique dealer in the city, rivaled only in lighting by Stanley's Gallery. My most recent purchase was a beautiful mahogany nightstand made in 1840 from England, pretty much the creme-de-la-creme as far as I can see. When I arrived, I was greeted by a female sales associate who was polite, helpful, if a bit overly professional. When I told her I was looking for a dynamite nightstand, she showed me a couple of absolutely exquisite pieces, not pushing me in any direction based on price. The piece I picked out is currently being touched up as we speak, and I'll update my review if that turns out disappointing. Once I identified the piece I wanted, I asked her for a lower price and received a 50 dollar discount. Overall, I will DEFINITELY be back as my income increases as I foresee this will become my number 1 destination for antique furniture. The pieces on display are almost universally outstanding. Keep in mind, this is not a place for bargain hunters, something I think that has led to a lot of the negative reviews and frustration on the owner's part. The only legitimate knocks I can give the place is that delivery probably ought to be included for in-city shoppers given the prices of the pieces and that the staff could do with a bit of loosening up. read more

I was a little nervous about the place when I stopped by on my run one day looking very shabby and kind of a mess, and noticed a doorbell to be let in...I was pleasantly surprised I was greeted by very nice people and allowed to browse on my own. When I was approached about help I was shown some really great pieces I'm dying to go back for!! Great finds and great staff, you're getting your money's worth!! read more

This is an overpriced uneducated antique wholesaler that is looking to move a bunch of cheap light fixtures hanging over run of the mill furniture. The layout of the first floor is okay for an Ikea, routing you they the rows of junk like cattle. I found little of use at his store. We asked for art deco style slip shade chandeliers, instead we were shown old french gate-style lighting fixtures with alabaster shades. I kept trying to explain what we were looking for only to be told that serious buyers would rather have what I was being shown. I am not a fan of this business. read more

Antique Resources is "To the Trade or for Serious Inquiries Only" according to the sign on the door. Not verbtatim from the sign, but close. There is even a doorbell. I was not put off by the sign and attempted to make a serious inquiry, but Antique Resources is not open on Sundays so I was not able to go inside. Low rating is due to the borderline rude sign essentially warning people off. There are some amazing light fixtures in the window and I would like to get inside, but the price tags I could see were a little scary (items in the $2k range). Likely caters more to decorators than to people decorating their own homes. If I am able to get inside in the next few weeks I will update with more info. read more

Stopped by on a Saturday before closing at 5:00, roughly 4:45, to purchase a table we saw earlier in the day. While a strange way to enter a retail store, we rang the bell to be let in (it's right by the "open" sign). Amazingly, they not only didn't answer but turned off the lights as we looked in. During my last trip to Chicago I happen to come upon the most wonderful up-scale antique shop/location at 1741 West Belmont in Chicago. The selection of chandeliers, scones, and antiques is truly remarkable. Total first class selection/operation. I could have purchased everything in the store!!!!! The man is SO rude. If you aren't seriously contemplating spending big bucks for antiques, don't waste your time

I've been there 4 times. Very pretty stuff, expensive, but looks like it's worth it. Except that the owner is rude and hard to deal with. I wondered if he had an ideal customer in mind and I wasn't it. I found a painting I liked and asked about the price. I waited until I had the money and returned to buy it later. When I returned a friend of the owner was there and couldn't confirm the pricing, so I needed to return again. I returned to buy the painting and the owner (he stated that he was the owner) quoted a new price that was almost twice the original price. There was a sticker with the price on it and he simply ignored me when I pointed it out. As I left he was very nasty demanding to know why I didn't buy it earlier. I go to a lot of antique stores. I know the owners can be strange birds, but I hadn't encountered this anywhere else before. What a waste of time. read more

Yes this is a store for RESPECTFUL ADULTS. And their security measures are definitely off putting. But I am not one to be put off by things designed to protect rare and fragile antiques. I have shopped major antiques stores the world over, this IS the trend in large metropolitan areas. It has to be so for the safety and security of both the shop owners and the public. At this point I wish to state, I am not someone with an unlimited budget. With that being said, Mirabel was delightful, and truly committed to helping me attain my goal, once I had the opportunity to explain that goal. In dealing with Mirabel, she graciously permitted me all of the time I wished, to get "an eye full". Their store is filled with stunningly beautiful things rarely presented outside of a museum or a FINE antiques store. I was unaware of the premise the store needs to cater to the shopper. It is my opinion that shoppers that ascribe to that, need to be shopping at the mall, and not the fine antiques store. In addition, I only became aware there was a second floor, when I read a review left here. I will be returning to view it, and cement my new friendship with Mirabel. read more

This is almost like going to a museum. The number of chandeliers is kind of overwhelming. I don't understand the comments about the owner as he was absolutely lovely to us and enjoyed telling us about things that we clearly weren't going to buy. Just an incredibly informed man about what he sells in his store. We ended up with a great chandelier that was a bit of a bargain because eight of the crystals had teeny chips on them. That information was clearly stated on the price tag. When it was installed, a little adaptor was missing from one of the lights and they are bringing it to our apartment tomorrow. All in all, a very nice experience and the chandelier looks fabulous. It's from the 1920's and our building was built in 1923, so it's almost like the chandelier came home! Yes, the merchanside is expensive but these are one of a kind antique pieces that you're never going to see again. Very special store. read more

This is by far the most off putting antique store I have ever been to. I'm a Registered Interior Designer and just moved here from Texas. In Texas, I worked on multimillion dollar homes. Trying to get familiar with the area and potential new shops to work with, I passed by and stopped in. I explained that I was an Interior Designer new to the area. They allowed me to walk through; however, I was followed around the entire store as if expected to steal something. The saleswoman walked me out, and I thanked her for letting me look around. Her way of saying goodbye - telling me "if the owner were here, he wouldn't have let you in". Wow. That was inviting. I definitely won't be back, nor will I ever be bringing any business their way. read more

A man answered the doorbell. I told him what I was looking for. He said he had a few in the $1,000 to $2,000 price range. He said very snottily and condescendingly, "We only have REAL antiques, not second-hand used things." Gee, I thought all antiques were second-hand and used. He made me feel like a serf to his king. We love Antique Resources! When we began our home renovation last year, we knew we wanted to preserve the antique light fixtures and add more. After an internet search we decided to check out this store. Yes, as other reviewers have indicated, "getting in" is a strange process and a little intimidating, but the bottom line is it's a major city, the inventory is vast and valuable and the owner is merely trying to protect himself and his inventory. Don't worry, you will never be denied entry, but people use discretion, don't bring your young children to this store!! Richard and Mirabel are wonderful. Yes, Mirabel will escort you around, but with hundreds of lights hanging above, furniture all around and two floors, we welcomed her direction and knowledge. We have not only bought from this store, but have had 5 lights restored. The service and quality of attention to detail is superior. We couldn't be happier with our purchasers. Go in, check out the inventory and get to know the owner and his team. They are wonderful, knowledgeable and truly LOVE what they do. read more

This place is a hidden gem! My wife decorated my entire office suite with paintings, furniture, and lighting purchased from Richard for a fraction of what comparable items would have cost elsewhere. Before we decided to buy here, we shopped all of the frou-frou galleries in the River North and even took a trip to New Orleans to tour the famous galleries in the French Quarter. We found that Richard's inventory is equal to or better than any of those galleries and his prices are much more reasonable. We absolutely love the things we've acquired from Richard and he is a pleasure to do business with. Richard really has an eye for fine art and antiques; the items in the store are all museum quality. For Father's Day, my wife surprised me with an amazing Charles Vickery maritime painting that is now the showcase of my office. If you love high-quality antiques and beautiful art, sculptures and lighting fixtures, you cannot go wrong shopping here. read more
