    Ancient rifles...

Truly the best antique store I have ever been to. I spent four hours here, and if it was all I did on my Alaska trip it would have been worth it. This store has everything from high-end jewelry and accessories to one-of-a-kind artifacts. That's five stars alone. But add another star for the reasonable pricing. Add another for the wonderful staff. Honestly, I'll talking about this store for years. And I'll be thinking about it every time I step into an inferior competitor's place.

This is a really neat spot to come walk through even if you're not planning to buy anything. They have so many antique/vintage items. As someone who is stepping into the world of vintage this place really revved up my spirits to learn more about history / time stamping items and just good ole stories of people! My uncle is a dental technician so he was looking to find teeth of animals but instead, Walter (the salt haired gentleman) showed him a polar bear claw necklace and gave him a buffalo's tooth for free (though it was damaged) still really nice of him. The piece was $150 - not surprised by the cost. You really need to know your stuff and do research when you shop at antique/vintage stores - the prices reflect the age, rareness, and how much the owner wants to price a piece. Check it out! They also have a ice cream shop next door - we passed but next time!

The owner is a very honest and wonderful person. He is a walking encyclopedia on ancient artifacts. His store is like a mini museum.

I decided to swing by here after finishing up errands for the day to see what hidden treasures I…read morecould find in their vinyl collection and boy did I find some! Pack Rat Antiques is located at the old Title Wave Books building off the intersection of Fireweed and Spenard behind Chilkoot Charlie's. The store is massive with many sections divided up into a co-op of different dealers on two levels. Items such as period clothing, military memorabilia, Alaskana such as Iditarod memorabilia, costume jewelry, classic furniture pieces, toys, old books, and yes, vinyl records can be found in the various booths throughout. The employees here are friendly and very knowledgeable about the items they had on display. One of the employees behind the counter said there were two areas I could find vinyl which were both located on the first floor. The first area was beside the aisle going towards the staircases up to the second floor. Here there was a good amount of vinyl displayed on a stand-up shelf with an additional metal rack filled with clearance vinyl behind it. The second area was a smaller stack of records on the left side of the aisle away from the main counter. These were a collection of local musicians and storytellers from Anchorage circa 1960's-70's. One item caught my eye which was the complete narration of the Good Friday Earthquake of 1964 which was only $2 and a great historical piece for my record collection. The other items were also notable with the one standing out was Synchronicity by the Police. While this album was their best known with hits like Every Breath You Take and King of Pain, it wasn't necessarily rare. What did make this album special was that this came from the estate of Byron Birdsall, one of Alaska's best known artists for his paintings of wildlife who passed away in December of 2016. I quickly snatched this up along with Van Halen's second album and Bob Seger & The Bullet Band's Night Moves. The albums were priced at a few dollars more than most thrift shops, but the selection of LPs from the 70's and 80's are plentiful here. The bulk of vinyl records found in thrift stores are largely from not very well-known artists from past decades as well as significant wear and tear on the covers or the record itself. However, one album that is priced here may randomly end up at a secondhand store for a lot less, but that is never guaranteed no matter how many times you go. This just proves that you never know what you may come across.

VERY overpriced. Been to hundreds of thrift shops and have never seen greed like this !read more

Once again, summertime is here and that means garage sales citywide for anyone looking for bargains at a fraction of the cost by regular retailers or treasure-hunting for a rare, hard-to-find item just sitting in someone's attic or storage room. I look forward to these events every weekend just to take advantage of the warm, sunny weather and of course, the thrill of the hunt for that rare vinyl record hidden in a stack of milk crates or cardboard boxes. I find that the shopping experience is a lot more laid-back when meeting the people holding the garage sales despite the fact that you may not find what you need or want from time to time. Some are decent families who go out of their way to welcome visitors by having their kids make fresh lemonade or homemade cookies for only 25 cents making it that much more enjoyable personally. As far as items go, anything can be found that could be worth more than what the asking price is. Clothing, furniture, antiques, household goods, electronics, books, tools, sporting goods, and DVDs among others are some good finds that are still like new or never been used. When shopping for vinyl records, I save as much as $10 or $20 on a stack that can also be negotiable for a lower price as the weekend draws to a close. Certain garage sales will do this on every single item for as much as 50 to 75% off after 2PM on Sundays. In certain cases, you may be lucky to get that item for free rather than the sellers wanting to put it back in storage. Some good resources to find a garage sale close to you or one that carries a particular item you're looking for are the classifieds on the Anchorage Daily News's website, Craiglist, or Marketplace on Facebook. This is one of the more enjoyable weekend activities you can take advantage of outside instead of going to the mall or watching a movie in the theater during the middle of the day.

Garage Sales - Another great find I bought last week in near mint and only played once.

Garage Sales - A reissue of Elvis's soundtrack album, not the original pressing, but it is in near mint condition worthy to add to the collection.

Rethink Home is a family-owned business located on W. Fireweed across from the VFW Post between Arctic and Spenard. The display floor is filled with an interesting mix of antique furniture, novelty items like 80's icon shirt button pins (Pac-Man, Mr. T, Galaga, Max Headroom, He-Man, and Q-Bert among others), a large detailed oil-style painting of Audrey Hepburn from the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's displayed on the rear wall in the back room, Alaskan memorabilia, and crafts from local artists. Like all of my other reviews on antique stores, my main focus is the vinyl they have in wooden crates set up by the front register. The collection here is relatively small and like the secondhand thrift stores, they will arrive randomly without notice. There was an array of albums from the 40's and 50's up to the more modern artists from the 70's and 80's. I saw a few that caught my attention but unfortunately had to pass on because of the condition of some of the records. Some jazz albums I considered buying had visible surface scratches and split seams on either the top or bottom of the album covers. At $5 to $8 on some of these, these were priced relatively high by their condition alone. However, they did have a separate crate of records that were marked down to $2 or 50% from their original selling price, but again the condition was a concern. The nearby secondhand thrift stores had vinyl in better shape at only $1 apiece or .60 at the lowest with minimal surface scratches or fully intact album covers with the original inner sleeve available. However, the people running this store are very friendly and this place is a good option for anyone looking to purchase some paintings or a detailed wood-carved piece of vintage furniture.
