Strolling down State Street, doing some window shopping. Found this gem of a card store. Love shops that have a wide selection of greeting cards and other gift items. The staff were friendly and helpful, and able to point me in the right direction. Found a bunch of hilarious (somewhat sarcastic) cards that almost had me rolling on the floor. Thought I was ready to be checked out, and then found a few more fun items at the register. I had to will myself to leave the store before I found more items (and spent more money). This store has a lot of cute cards, stationery, and little gift type items. Some of it is a little pricey, but a lot of it also seems to be locally made. I didn't purchase anything so I can't speak to the service, but it was a fun shop to look around in. read more

Obsessed with this stationery store. This place has two floors overflowing with trinkets, stickers, notebooks, pens, crafts, accessories, and even t-shirts. I've come back a few times to grab cute hair clips, a Japanese notebook, and some adorable stickers. While the store can feel a bit cramped, especially when it's busy, they keep everything well-organized, and the bright lighting helps create a pleasant atmosphere. They offer unique items that I couldn't resist, a little pricey, but so cute and totally worth it. Overall Service: The line was long, but the friendly young staff, kept their energy up and were clearly enjoying their work. If I lived in or near Madison I'd probably be broke. :) I found Anthology on Facebook and quickly hopped over to their website. I realized they sell something called 'good things, small packages' and immediately wanted to order one. As a lover of grab bags growing up (and still!), this offering really spoke to me. What you get will be unexpected! When placing your order you get to include your likes/favorites. For example, a couple of the things I included were: midwest, 1984, purple, rocks/gemstones, anthropomorphic foods, coffee. I had a specific sticker request and they included it! Fast forward a few days and squeee! My 'good things/small package' just arrived and it brought a huge smile to my face. Stickers, decals, a purple Gelly Roll pen! My 11-yr old self reemerged. A very fun gift to myself. I plan to order again and purchase the next size up. The $25 price included shipping. Thank you, Anthology, for curating a package that was very customized. LOVE this shop! I'm a sucker for cute art, big and small. Great shop for gift giving as there are hundreds and hundreds of affordable fun/funny stationary, stickers, mugs, signs and more. Some of it leans a little liberal with the Ginsburg pins and Don't Tread on Me Uterus but maybe that's your thing. Otherwise, there's a lot of Wisconsin leaning decor as well. We loved the store, bought a couple stickers to take home and would recommend everyone to stop in Atleast once, especially if you need a cute gift. read more

This is the cutest little shop on State Street and it all started from 2 sisters! They had cute shirts and even onesies with clever prints on them. I love that they had protest and election pins and free tattoos for the March for our lives! I am so glad I purchased a "nevertheless she persisted" T-shirt from them to give them my support. My 11-year old niece digs into complicated plot twists in YA novels like The Devil's Thief and The Last Magician. In her down time she enjoys coloring as well. Anthology had the perfect items for this niece's winter birthday, a coloring book Journey in Color: Moroccan Motifs ($14.95) and Reeves 24 artist colors colored pencils ($18.00). Molly Hatcher's compilation of outlines culled from the geometric designs of Moroccan tiles, ceramics and textiles will surely pull this 11-year old deeper into her imagination and a world of patterns. The former Fanny Garver Gallery now Anthology's new home is really a welcome change from their smaller space just down the street. It is easier to spend time browsing and not feeling confined, or even uncomfortable, by a few other customers at your elbow or back.The second floor of the new space is accessed by a staircase that is easily climbed. The two sisters Laura and Saachi have a wonderfully creative and thoughtful touch -- a small desk with crayons and papers for young shoppers -- old bureaus repurposed. It makes one feel at ease setting things down, opening them up and exploring before purchase. You will find things here you don't find anywhere else in town, including new ideas for the next project. I always buy a few sheets from their collection of stunning papers to wrap presents, lovely designs and prints that are really special. Great little gift shop! I came in looking for a present for a friend. I ended up buying socks, but I definitely perused everything. I loved the shelving that they use - mostly vintage dressers and such that add a really unique touch to the store. I love that they have Japanese stationery. I used to collect stationery as a kid, and most of which were from cute little Asian stationery shops, so that brought back some good memories. I'm pretty sure all the Wisconsin art is local. I love that there's so much variety in this store. I will come back to shop for presents in the future! read more

My favorite store in all of Madison! I always come here for clever birthday cards and gifts, political stickers and pins, crafts, and home decorations! I love the vibe of this store--I discovered it during the 2011 protests and have kept going back every since. During the pandemic, they have made it really easy to either shop in person, do curbside pickup or order online. Most importantly, they have created a welcoming and creative outlet for people! read more

Adorable gift shop on State. They sell a variety of prints, buttons, cards, crafting supplies, jewelry, tote bags - you name it, they've got it and it's probably cute and/or funny to boot. I also like that they have a lot of political-themed buttons, posters, and jewelry; it adds spark and personality to an already lovely gift shop. Additionally, the customer service is great here. They were once out of a print I wanted to buy but they offered to take my number and call me when they had it back in stock. I promptly received a call about a week later. If you need a card for a special occasion or a cute Madison-themed gift, I would definitely check out Anthology. read more

No greeting when we came in, and there were two women working there, one of which was the owner. we made it 2/3rds through when one of the local artists who supplies them came in. I swear the women working almost jumped across the counter to hug her! How bout a little love for your customers who could buy stuff? Prices are higher than a typical office max but you're buying a little boy's football cleats when you buy his mom's notebook, not a CEO's fifth vacation home. Worth it in my opinion. In addition to those items, Anthology also sells t-shirts and prints by local artists, and a lot of crafty things like washi tape and rubber stamps. It looks like an Etsy shop explosion up in there. I found this place right here on Yelp. I noticed the website showed some "Greetings from Madison" postcards which I wanted to buy as souvenirs before going home, but there was only one problem: Anthology doesn't open until noon on Sundays. I had two options: save it for another time and get started on the long road home, or stick around for an hour and a half and get those souvenirs I so desperately wanted. Greed beat Good Time Management the way rock beats scissors. This store is a treasure trove of goodies! They have everything from locally handmade jewelry to imported Japanese stationery, like the kind you'd find at Japanese hyaku-en shops--Japan's equivalent of our dollar stores--which I love more than world peace and free ice cream combined. But I digress. One of my most delightful finds was the vintage travel posters near the entrance. I went to a vintage poster fair that opened my eyes to a time when travel companies had to use bold colors and simple shapes to convey Paris' elegance or New York's modern glory. For $13 a print, it was very reasonable. In fact, everything was reasonably priced with one exception: the Japanese imports. But I think that's more because they're imports; it can't be helped. In short, Anthology was so worth the 90-minute wait. I would go back in a heartbeat. read more

This store is the newest crowning jewel of State Street. The Komai sisters have the golden touch when it comes to crafts and choosing merchandise that is unique and novel. I love that the store features goods made by local artisans. The sisters who are artists themselves display their work as well. This is a great place to find a memorable gift for a special someone, a close friend, a family member, or a coworker. I've received several compliments on the gifts I've generously given myself ; ) A trip to Madison is not complete without a. a visit to the Brunkow Cheese stand at the Farmer's Market for some cheese curds b. a look inside the capital rotunda, c. a walk on the lakeshore path and the arboretum d. a beer and popcorn at the Union terrace with a front row view of the sunset and e. a shopping trip to Anthology, State Street.
