Bodie's Place Playground is an inclusive, boundless playground that opened at Eisenhower Park in…read moreMilford, Connecticut in May 2011. The 16,000-square-foot playground was made possible by a $400,000 fundraising campaign. The playground is named for John "Bodie" Vaccino", a local Milford boy who was born with cerebral palsy. When he was younger, his parents took him to a boundless playground called Hannah's Dream in New Haven. Bodie was able to play with his sister, Emma, as if he had no limitations. His parents then set a project in motion to bring a similar playground to their hometown of Milford. They didn't want a playground just for children with disabilities, but rather a community play mecca for kids of all abilities. The playground was designed by John Hollerbach, owner of Creative Recreation, who has worked on other projects associated with the nonprofit Boundless Playgrounds. An adjoining splash pad opened in July 2018. My family and I recently visited Bodie's Place Playground while we were on our summer break from school. My wife and I are always looking for good playgrounds for our sons, and we heard lots of great things about Bodie's Place. The playground actually features 2 large playscapes: one intended for younger children (ages 2-5) and another intended for older children (ages 5-12). We thought that both playscapes were equally impressive. After our sons played on them for a while, they changed into their swimsuits and headed on over to the equally impressive splashed. Both of our sons had a blast! I must also note that there are plenty of amenities at the park, including bathrooms, pavilions, picnic tables and benches available at the park. We highly recommend Bodie's Place Playground to families with small children and look forward to returning!

It's always so nice to see how clean the park is, as I've noticed fellow dog owners doing a great job of cleaning up after their pets. Seems like the type of place people stop by to let their dogs run while they are walking their dogs, which I love. Pop in for a little bit and let the dog run, then continue on your walk! Most of it is gravel but there's still some dirt and grass. The dogs are usually chill and that sentiment goes for the owners as well. There's a group vibe as it seems most of the owners know each other. Maybe if Roscoe (my dog) stops trying to hump their dogs, I'll get in the clique too. Doesn't hurt to bring a bottle of water - there's usually a water bowl there. Oh. One side note: Sometimes you'll run into the occasional "urban camper" hanging out in the dog park sans a dog of their own. They're just usually doing urban camping activities like taking a nap, drinking a forty or whatever. They don't seem to bother people or cause trouble though.

The park is almost 300 acres of beach, dunes, salt marsh, and woods. You can beach, swim, fish, walk along the beach or boardwalks, birdwatch... (FYI: alcohol is prohibited, so this is a beach for families, relaxing, and no-alcohol fun.) It's free for in-state registered vehicles. If your car or rental car is not registered in Connecticut, it costs $22 on weekends or holidays and $15 on weekdays (or $112 for a season pass). We couldn't stay long (the downside of a roadtrip with a planned out itinerary), which was too bad, because the beach was very nice! Crowded, perhaps, but what beach isn't on a hot July day?! I could've stayed a while with an umbrella for shade, a book, and a picnic! A lovely public beach.
