Coming to this spot is starting to become a weekly ritual for our family. The park isn't anything fancy but is a good size, fenced in area, and kept pretty clean. There are plenty of benches and tables for the humans to sit, water bowls for the dogs, and owners are generally good about picking up after their dogs and watching that they stay out of trouble. There's also a separate small dog area. Our dog loves it there and we have a pretty good time too. read more

Izzy and I love this dog park! There are always dogs here at anytime after 1-2pm We stay for an hour or two and the people and dogs that come on a daily are super cute and friendly. read more

Excellent dog park and run. Very spacious. Very open. Plenty shade, water bowls, dog houses, toys, trash cans, bags, agility boards, trees, bulletin board and I LOVE the fact there is also small gated area to use for small dogs, older dogs, packs or even aggressive areas. Great place and our dog was so so happy here. Little difficult to find. The dog park is across from the big town park (bassett park) and sports fields. But the address on their website us not accurate for gps. read more

I always love bringing my dog here. Like any park, you have to be aware of the humans and leave if there are neglectful ones around.

Decided to take to my dog to the Hamden dog park as an alternative to the Union Street dog park in New Haven. Both are about equal distance from my home and I heard how spacious and popular this one was. I went during the week around 7pm and there were only a few other dogs there, mostly because the sky was dark and a thunderstorm was fast approaching. The parking lot is quite large, but was mostly filled due to little league games going on at the fields across the street. Dog park was large with several benches, picnic tables and water bowls for the dogs which are filled up by the humans who choose to do so as there is a hose/water pump. Unfortunately, most of them contained dirty water and seemed like a breeding ground for bacteria and parasites. Also, due to the size of the park, I felt as though I had to follow my dog closely behind, fearing that he'd poop when I couldn't see him. I saw a lot of owners chatting away while their dogs were off pooping on the other side of the park and not even watching them. There is a lot of dirt/mud in the park which equals lots of opportunity for my dog to get into mischief (digging, etc) if I am not close enough to stop him from doing so. Because there are so many trees in the park, it was also very buggy. I came home with several large mosquito bites on my arms and legs. Next time I will remember to bring bug spray for myself. In general, I will probably rotate between going to the 2 dog parks to provide some variety for my dog, however, Union Street has a edge over this one, for the reasons I mentioned. read more

Hamden Dog Park - Charlie the Basset approves of "Bassett Park." - Dog Parks Near Me - Hamden, Connecticut

This is my puppy's favorite dog park. He always gets excited as we approach as there is consistently a good crowd of dogs there. The puppies are for the most part very well socialized and I've never seen a serious fight between the canines. The humans are a varied bunch -- from the very friendly to the j*rks who don't pick up after their dogs. But you're not there for yourself, you're there for your dog. And my dog *loves* this park. There's plenty of space to run around. It's possible to have up to three dog cliques at the same time going, so he has his choice of social milieu. On weekends it can be very packed (up to 20+ dogs), so come on a weekday afternoon if it's your first time. I'm marking that it's not good for kids as a dog park is for dogs, not for kids. Leave your kids at home. p.s. The park is at the corner of Waite and Ridge Road. From New Haven: take Whitney to Waite, then turn right and go up the hill. You'll see the dog park on your right. The formal name of it is "Bassett Park," part of the Hamden city parks system. read more

Sometime a.dog park is as good as the people who go there. I have going there for years. I see people who JUST come in and socialize, they don't pay attention to their dogs. Alot of them (not saying all) do not clean up after their dogs. The dog park is suppose to be a show place. It is run by volunteers. IT IS NOT A PARK RUN BY THE TOWN OF HAMDEN. (Like a lot of people think.) We put signs DO NOT BRING CHILDREN INTO THE DOG PARK! Like every thing "How do you make people care? Maybe some people who can understand the frustrations others feel who do care read more

Nice big dog park with plenty of playmates. Generally kept very clean by most people who take their dogs. Almost all dogs and people are very nice and responsible; lots of regulars. Weekends and evenings after work can be very busy (sometimes 25-30 dogs at once) but there's plenty of room for everybody. There are always at least a few dogs here at any given time. I take my husky at least 3-4 times per week and he loves it. read more

This was our first time at the Hamden dog park and it was a great experience. The park is very clean with plenty of water bowls for the pups and also plenty of sitting areas for the humans. It was the perfect amount of space for the dogs to play yet it's not too large of a space to keep an eye out on your pup. My English bulldog is a bit nervous but she had a great time with all the other dogs and the friendly owners. We will definitely be regulars now that the warmer weather is here! read more

This is a much nicer dog park than the one in new haven. Google has the exact address to this park. It's spacious, has both a small and large dog playing area. Plenty of water bowls, they are elevated and slotted. Plenty of trash can. Plenty of balls to play fetch. Even has a dog house and a barn. Picnic tables and benches all throughout with shaded trees. Ample parking. read more

Hamden Dog Park - He's so excited to be at the park I can't drive! - Dog Parks Near Me - Hamden, Connecticut

I love the Hamden Dog Park. We came here when my pup was just four months as we were looking to socialize him. He was a little nervous around big dogs, but after bringing him here multiple times a week he has become so social, even with Great Danes! the other owners are so friendly and are very nice about encouraging new pet owners to get used to the park. The park is shady with plenty of picnic tables, benches, and water bowls. The dogs like to jump up on the tables and use them as toys, which I think is great (though not everyone agrees with me there, I think). There is running water and plastic bags are available should your dog poo in the park. There is also a small dog pen adjacent to the large pen that no one ever uses, but would be great for owners who think their dog needs a safe way to introduce themselves to other dogs before being let into the larger park. The two negatives are that there is very little grass in the park so it can get kind of muddy and dusty, and also because of all the shade and water there are a ton of mosquitos. read more

This is a nice sized dog park with ample parking. I always have a nice time here. There are a lot of regulars that come here so while the dogs are running around the adults get to interact with other dog lovers. The park is usually very clean and maintained by volunteers who are more than likely board members. They constantly change the water bowls to keep them fresh. It's really a great place! read more

This is the best place to bring your dog during the week. It gets very crowded on Saturdays and Sundays! You dont need to bring any toys because there are sticks and scattered tennis balls and usually a dog or two to chase around. You should bring your own doggy water bottle to fill up the water bowl especially when it gets warmer!! The separate little dog pen gets lonely sometimes, but its nice if there are a bunch of big dogs. It is a park for dogs not kids since there are lots of big dogs and they might not be used to having kids around. I think its a great park and everyone usually pitches in to keep it clean and dog friendly. read more

Nice dog park and typically nice people who come. There isn't much for the dogs to do besides play with each other, balls or poop but it's still a nice park. It's kept pretty clean thanks to responsible pet owners. I have been going there everyday since we don't have a backyard, my dogs look forwards to it everyday. read more

If you're new to this park, anything you and your dog do, will be wrong and very much "against the rules". This is per the unofficial dog park police. When you try to explain to police that you didn't see any of these supposed infractions written anywhere, they will say, under their breath, but so everyone can hear, "Can't anyone read anymore?!?". Realizing you are dealing with people who have a Napoleon complex about a dog park, you will walk away only to be told that the bag of treats you always keep in your dog walking jacket pocket, that are now poking out, are "not allowed!". You apologize for the oversight, and continue walking only to hear "Jesus Christ, are people that dumb?". You ignore this and continue watching your dog having a blast playing with some of the other dogs. This makes you happy, but that doesn't last long, because all of a sudden fido is being chased, jumped on, snapped at and clawed by a little dog who you realize is the one the police officer was holding when they came in. You will be the only one who intervenes during the situation, as the popo will just be sitting there watching this all unfold. Once you've gotten tiny hellhound away from your dog, but not before being nipped, you'll be told that it's probably best to take your rather large dog into a separate area which is marked with a sign that clearly reads, "small dogs only",(yes, surprisingly you actually can read). Now having realized that the rules are being made up by these people as you go along, you decide to take your beloved pooch home, only for the police to shout as you're walking out, "You're lucky there wasn't a pitbull here! Your dog is way too submissive, a pitbull would have eaten them alive. You can't be here with that dog when a pitbulls around." Looking down at your stout dog with the ginormous head, who by now is staring back at you with knowing eyes, you utter the words that just solidifies how clueless these people really are, "My dog IS a pitbull!" Mouths agape, the police attempt to mutter something, but finally they are at a loss for words. As you and your "too submissive", but "will eat another dog alive" pitbull happily hop into the car, you smile because you've figured out that the only joy those people get out of life is attempting to make other people feel inadequate...at a dog park of all places. And the last thing those miserable people hear, as you and fido drive off blissfully into the sunset is, "not today, dog park police. Not today." read more

Overall dog park is well maintained. However, owners don't pay attention to their dogs. 1. All dogs start mobbing (crowding at the entrance) when another dog tries to enter. Owners don't care about this malignant behavior, keep texting or chatting 2. Small dogs are rampant in the big dog zone, even though there is an area for small dogs 3. Owners have a click and will be rude to new people even if their dog was not the aggressor 4. Can get crowded with frequent dog fights 5. Would not recommend going there especially during peak times: in am and after work. read more

I'd heard some mixed reviews from friends, but we wanted to bring our dog out yesterday and came to the Hamden Dog Park. What a cute place! When you enter, there's a double door system so it really reduces the risk that your dog could get out when another dog comes in. Super smart. Around the park are benches and picnic tables for humans to sit and some dog bowls (though the water was pretty much solidly brown in some bowls so I was glad we brought our own water for our pup). The people in the park were friendly and there weren't any snarly, angry dogs roaming around. Our dog was the grumpy one! He is still adjusting and doesn't like when he's ganged up on by dogs sniffing him out so we'll have to work on that. But overall, I'm excited to get him adjusted and bring him back to this park. Our dog had fun running mostly around the perimeter of the park, exploring every tree possible. The park is huge! Parking is easy (they had a sign about some recent thefts from vehicles but a cop was actually stationed in the far back of the parking lot). read more

This is a great dog park. I took my standard poodle puppy there today for the first time. He had a blast! He is only 6 months old and weighs about 55 lbs. There were plenty of dogs his size to play with. The park is very clean and well maintained. It is wooded with picnic tables for the people and lots of different terrains for the dogs. I will definitely be going back. read more

Hamden Dog Park - A cool drink after a good game of tag! - Dog Parks Near Me - Hamden, Connecticut

This dog park is surprisingly nice for the Hamden area. It's huge, fenced in and has a separate area for small dogs if they don't like to play with the big guys. Most of the owners keep an eye on their dogs and pick up after them. After a few visits though, I've noticed that a few of them use the dog park as a social gathering more so than a dog park and tend to ignore what their dogs do. There are benches, picnic tables and toys scattered throughout. If I'm in the area with my dogs, I don't mind stopping in. read more

Don't take your dog here. Owners ignore their dogs and bring poorly socialized animals to the park. When their dogs are rude and rough with your dog the owners will blame you and treat you badly. This is the worst park in all of the New Haven area. read more

Goodness but do I miss going here with my dog. He doesn't mix well with crowds, so I had to stop going. I found that this was a very social place for both human's and canines. The attendees do a good job of self-policing and handling problem people and/or animals ("ohh, your dog pooped, you need a baggie?"). This park is a great example of a community coming together to get something done. I don't know if I'll ever get another dog, but if I do I'll try to integrate him/her here. read more

The dog park is good in many ways, it's big, the fence around it is sturdy and there is a double fence at the entrance/exit so that you have time to put the leash on Fido before he runs into the parking lot. The park is all dirt, however, which isn't ideal. I'm sure it is hard to grow grass in a shaded area where dogs run around and pee all day, but the dogs and I get pretty dirty. read more

Not good. Not good. No grass, just dirt. Litter, unclean entrance , dirty, depressing. I will not be taking my dogs back.

Thanks for making Hershey feel welcome. I love that there are plenty of water bowls and a fenced in area where you remove the leash before entering the park. Every dog Hershey has met has taught her how to be a better puppy. I also am happy there's always at least one dog each time we visit. Owners love their dogs. The small fenced in area has 3 entrances so you have the option of taking a time out when needed. read more

I brought my puppy here for the first time on a weekday around 12 pm and he loved it! I've taken my dog there a few times. Used to go more often until he got Giardia. The park is filthy. Standing water, I bring my own water but he managed to drink from a community water bowl that had dirty water. People chat with friends and don't see when their dog is pooping. It's so buggy due to being in the woods. Great idea but if only it was respected and cleaned. read more

A friend at work recommended this park so I brought the dogs there this weekend... What a great place! It's big, well-fenced, has a separate small-dog area, and lots of nice people and their dogs in and out all day long. Will be making ourselves regulars there... read more

I have a 1 1/2 year old lab. I've heard good things about dog parks, in fact my aunt started one in Santa Rosa Beach, FL. Since it was a gorgeous day, I thought I would bring Jessie to run around in play in a nice fenced in area. Boy was I wrong! The park did not have one inch of grass - it was covered with trap rock - not so comfy for Jessie's feet. He was freaked out walking over it. Now, if you know labs - they like to run. Jessie just stood around and barked. He had no idea what to do! The toys that were there - frisbees, balls were absolutely disgusting! They were covered in mud - I ripped that frisbee right out of Jessie's mouth - yuck! Walking around, I noticed dog poop - there were bags for people to pick up after their pet, but I guess some people are just inconsiderate. I also witnessed a dog fight between a large breed dog and a small breed dog. The owner of the large breed dog was not paying attention and continued talking to her friend while her dog was trying to eat the little dog! Obviously, the small dog owner was furious! I thought that there was going to be a fight between owners! All in all, I just don't think it was a clean environment for dogs - pee and poop everywhere! No water, no grass and just plain disgusting! I do not recommend anyone bring thier pet here - they might catch something! read more
