The Air Line State Park Tail is really quite spectacular, one of the best biking trails, scenery…read morewise, that I've been on. It's a rails to trails project, and the southern section of the trail starts at Main Street in East Hampton, and runs all the way to Windham, all off road (except for one short section going under Highway 2.) The path is all gravel/dirt, so it's good for hikers as well as cyclists. There seem to be a lot of trails that have sections that utilize the Air Line Trail, on the day we rode there were quite a few people, but not so many that it was a traffic issue. The first section from the Cranberry Bog down to Salmon River is mostly downhill, which is of course fun going one way, but a little challenging on the way back, just something to keep in mind difficulty wise. There's a fantastic variety of scenery along the way, from cuts blasted through rock with water dripping, to high-level viaducts, and marshy bog areas, and tree lined paths. The time of year we rode was early spring, but I imagine it is pretty gorgeous in the autumn when the colors are turning. There's lots of parking all along the route, so if you're someone who likes to hike/ride sections of trail, you'll have plenty of places to go from. My only main complaint and the reason for 4 stars instead of five is that there is not a single bathroom along the trail at all. Not even a porta at one of the larger parking lots. This is a huge oversight in my opinion, and something the State Parks should really consider remedying.

Whenever I went biking, there were always families, more serious athletes, and recreational folks like me just wanting to get fresh air and exercise. It seems to be well kept in that new gravel is laid down annually, as well as trees are cut to keep the trail safe and free of debris. The scenery is breath taking, especially in the fall where you can see the pretty colors. You can Chart how far you want to stay on the trail as it continues to Windham.

Crystal-clear water + sunny spring day = perfect hike…read more Spent a beautiful spring sunny day at Wadsworth Falls State Park, and it did not disappoint. I took so many pictures of the clear river. It's seriously that stunning. The swimming water vanished. We hiked the Wadsworth Falls Loop (3.6 miles, easy, great waterfall views) and also checked out part of the Main Trail. Trails were in good shape; just a little mud here and there, but totally manageable. Bonus tips from my visit: · Dogs welcome on leash · Free for CT-registered cars; $10-15 for out-of-state · Restrooms, parking, and picnic tables available · Get there early on a sunny day to beat the crowds If you love clear water, peaceful forest walks, and two distinct waterfalls, don't miss this spot. Already planning to come back with an all-terrain wheelchair for a friend (you can reserve one in advance). Would I go again? 100%.

Gorgeous gorges! Although this park has ample signage against swimming, the Coginchaug River is…read morelovely on the eyes and ears, and being centrally located, Wadsworth Falls is a great local escape. If you have the right footwear in winter, it's a place for a rewarding hike! Boots and grips and the occasional side stepping is good for your winter trip. Mind the tracks, or crews tending the still in-use tracks, then enjoy the lovely views of multiple waterfalls, some frosted over, but water audibly rushing beneath the ice. Starting out, we didn't see the blue trail marked on the yellow and orange junction map, but the trails were well-marked with vertical tree blazes, so if you take the orange, yellow, or blue trails, you should be in good shape. If you don't have the time for a decent hike and just need a restful stop, large falls are just below the parking lot (those no access signs on the trails don't kid!). All year, enjoy! There are zero facilities here, and the only amenities appear to be accessible recreation and a dog waste station beneath the parking lot, but you aren't in the middle of nowhere. Pack in, pack out, and enjoy as much or little woods as you like, and enjoy the peaceful sounds and sights of the many falls.

The road going to both is narrow and has some sharp turns, so definitely do the speed limit. Otherwise, they are easy to get to from the entrance. The Judges Caves offers a short experience; it's essentially a rock formation and not really a cave. Interesting to look at and climb for a few minutes. The scenic overlook offers a few view spots where you can see the sound all the way to Long Island. A fun little excursion after my visit to the Trolley Museum.

Road was closed to vehicular traffic, but the walk was nice and gradual, all of it on what seemed to be new macadam. After about 1.6 miles, road forks. To the right is a short walk to Judge's Cave. To the left, a short walk to the scenic overlook. Interesting story commemorated on a plaque on the cave. Very few other people, and almost as many dogs. Scenic overlook kind of blah....no water views, but at an elevation of about 600 ft. Overall, a beautiful day. Breezy, shaded by a nice canopy most of the way. Good way to stretch the legs, and learn an interesting piece of history.

The museum and restrooms were closed…read more(seasonal?), but there were lots and lots of joggers, walkers, bike riders, dog walkers, and roller bladers. The main path, which parallels the old lock, is paved, at least as far as we went in. Beautiful day, with plenty of outdoor benches. Only graffiti I saw was on wooden bridge by caretaker's house. A'hole(s). Otherwise, no litter, and well maintained.

So, the Lock 12 Historical Park is separate from the Farmington Canal Trail, it is a historical…read morepark just off of the trail in Cheshire. It is a pretty park, with bathroom facilities, but all of it could use a little bit of TLC. There aren't any interpretive signs to speak of explaining about the canal's history or even explaining the lock that is here. The lock itself is a bit overgrown and in need of restoration. The bathrooms are nice but could be in better condition. It really could be and should be more than it is, hopefully the town could put some funding into this park for improvements. It's a nice place to stop to use the bathroom, but not any sort of park that I would consider a destination in and of itself. And most important: being that how it's located just off a bicycle trail, there are no bike racks. That's a big oversight, IMO.

This is a fabulous system of trails that has recently had new trail markers and is accessible on…read moreboth Avenza maps and All Trails. There are entrances all around the almost 1200 acres, but I am most familiar with the Sam Hill Entrance (a great hike to Lost Lake from there) and the Dunk Rock Road Entrance (I recommend a trip to Dinosaur Rock).

My husband and I hiked the north-most Green Circle Trail yesterday. It was quite overgrown with…read morenumerous very muddy spots. The higher portion of the trail included a very narrow path that is on the edge of a drop-off with some precarious footing. The path is described as "An easy walk" on the Trust's website. More dangerous was the White Circle trail heading south that connects to that section of Green. It is a boardwalk for quite some distance. It was so overgrown that I couldn't see the boardwalk immediately ahead. Worse, my husband fell when a board broke downwards when he stepped on it. I don't know how he wasn't injured or at least, didn't fall into the water. Fortunately fell, sitting on the remaining boards. I tried to reach someone at the Guilford Land Trust today to warn hikers to avoid that trail but no one answered the phone. The voicemail was full. I sent an email. We've hiked Westwoods several times and until yesterday, enjoyed it. Bebe G.
