Distracted by forced deadlines, emphasis on speed rather than real craft and working for someone I could not respect, I was blindsided by bigotry while working on an exterior project at Don's residence. My soul's assailant: a large blackface lawn ornament laid out before me. Struck dumb by the hatred and bloody echoes eminating from the artifact, my heart revealed what my mind had veiled: Don's misogyny, his solicitation of skilled labor AND racism grew from a common source of evil no part of me would entertain much less assist. I quit soon after. No call no show. A resignation as shameful as my silence in the face of passive aggressive oppression. I failed as the mother of a black son, failed as the beloved daughter of Cincinnati's radical and self empowered feminist family and dishonored generations of dedication and skilled trade excellence. This painter gave me less than 24 hours notice they were coming to paint my living room, kitchen,…read moreand laundry room. Told me not to worry they can move and do what they need to paint. I had paint splatter all over my belongings. After they left I did a load of laundry. The sink overflowed because they left their rags in my utility sink. So I had to pull my washer and dryer out to clean up all the water on my floor. Then saw that they did not paint the bottom portion of the walls in the laundry room hoping I would just see above the washer and dryer painted and never know what couldn't be see was painted. The owner came back to fix it. We had a doorbell box on the living room that was painted by the previous owners. Now we have to paint it as well. We asked if they would please paint it while painting the living room walls. They did not. So I asked him to please do it while finishing the laundry room. He painted it the kitchen color. We pointed it out before he left and claimed he had to wait for it to dry and he will be back to fix it. Never came back never returned our calls. Left us with not paint left over from the living room to do it ourself. Irony is he told us a story about how he stood on the side of the road with a sign complaining about a car dealership and if he had an office I would have done the same I was so disappointed in being treated the way he treated us.
