Before coming to see Annabeth as a senior in high school I had received 9 years of choral training in the Conspirare Youth Choirs and had tried private voice lessons before but quit when I noticed no real change in my singing. I signed up for voice lessons with her because I wanted some extra help on a solo that I would be performing at school but kept coming to lessons until I left for college because of how amazing they were. After every lesson I felt that I had made extreme progress and after just a couple months of training with her my voice sounds completely different. Voice is more difficult to teach than other instruments because the teacher can't see what the instrument is doing, but this didn't stop Annabeth from knowing exactly what was going on with my vocal chords and giving me very specific things to do to change my sound for the better. Like many people, I'm a little shy singing in front of others, but I never had this issue with her. She's an extremely warm person who I was never afraid of having my voice crack or sound gross in front of because she would explain to me specifically what was going on and how I could fix it, and many times, highlighting that it was actually a sign of progress. As someone who is critical of their singing, having someone tell me that the imperfections were something good made me so much more confident. One of her main goals is to have her students become self sufficient and because of that made me think about how I was singing and what I was doing with my voice in a completely new way. Her lessons prepared me for college auditions and I truly believe were a major reason why I was able to get into the Cornell University Chorus. i've been a songwriter and musician for over 15 years. (soundofthestate.com) It's my passion and livelihood. Studying music in college and taking voice lessons on and off for over 5 years I figured trying out a new teacher after a hiatus from vocal lessons would be a refresher, some motivation, and a slightly different take on things. I thought I'd maybe get some new pointers, take a few lessons and call it quits. Jesus, was I wrong. Annabeth has really revolutionized my entire take on singing, and has given me a control over my voice that several vocal coaches throughout college could never give to me. I have had several "Ah ha!" moments and breakthroughs whereas I thought these were issues my specific voice would never be able to overcome. Lame yelp review, yeah? But she's really done that for me. I started taking voice lessons with Annabeth six months ago because I wanted to be able to join in when my friends play music on the porch. I was a total beginner. I knew that it didn't sound good when I sang, so I just didn't do it. Now I am singing simple harmony parts. I am so glad that I found Annabeth when I decided to learn. She understands individual learning styles and how to teach music. She also adapts really easily. I am amazed at the way I can ask her a question about something I have been wondering or working on and on the spot she comes up with a lesson tailored to that specific thing. I don't have enough experience with music teachers to review Annabeth to that detail. However, what I do have a lot of experience with is teachers, being taught, and even teaching others myself. In that regard she is in the top 0.05% of people I have had the pleasure to learn from. Being analytical is a potential understatement for me. I love knowing how things work, and to some degree I won't even do what I am told without an explanation for it to make sense in my head. Annabeth is keen enough to notice these traits in others, and she will tailor herself to their learning style. In my case this meant stepping away from the basics of just playing out scales/drills, and focusing on the theory behind music. While I may have progressed differently with a more rigid structure, my motivation and interest wouldn't have been as strong. I began lessons in voice and piano with Annabeth in early elementary school. I still remember our first lesson and how immediately comfortable I felt. I was one of those people who felt anxious about everything--except for my lessons with Annabeth. I truly think my lack of nerves allowed me to dive into the music in a way I never had with anything else before. I never felt as if I was going to a class with her, yet I came away being able to sing comfortably and well in public. We later advanced to guitar and then basic music theory, and with Annabeth I developed a basic proficiency in each. I began taking lessons with Annabeth about 2 months ago. I took voice lessons growing up since age 6 and was excited but nervous to get back into it after having not sung for about 4 years. Annabeth was immediately responsive and easy to schedule with and definitely took the time to walk through my history and skillset in our first complimentary lesson. Her pricing is on par with other teachers in Austin but her attitude is much more relaxed yet professional. She's easily approachable and I always leave my lessons feeling excited about the new things I have learned and need to practice. Out of the many teachers I have had in my life, Annabeth really masters the art of being great for teaching technique and fundamentals while making it fun and relaxing.
