I find this place a bit hard to review. The only food I have had here is the chili. Best I have had in berlin, though my wife wouldn't call it chili as it has beans, corn, etc, that is normal for chili this side of the Pecos, but not real chili. No matter the season, it's a great place for people watching and if you sit on the canal a great place for boat watching. But in the sunny month(s) in Berlin, good luck getting a table outside or canal-side. The whisky selection is pretty good and prices for them pretty good,too. A bit grungy, that kind of grunge of a place that sees constant business all day, all year. One reason I would go for 3 stars. But such a great vibe and I dig the chili, 5. Service is friendly. Loved this place, it was so close to our Airbnb, plus it was soo nice to sit by the water and watch the swans. Friendly service and great food, nothing fancy but it was good. Also convenient that they serve breakfast menu till 4pm, so we were able to sleep in after late nights out and still get breakfast. read more

The website alone was enough to make me list Ankerklause as a must-see while in Berlin. My girlfriend and I visited on a Friday night, hoping to meet up with friends. The friends arrived just before 10 p.m. and left because they couldn't get past the crowd into the door. We arrived around 10:30 p.m., walked right in and got a table. The drinks were heavy pours and beers were well-priced. The kitchen was closed, but soon basket vendors came by with samosas and pretzels. The place was just loaded with happy, brainy Germans playing songs on the jukebox and bopping along to the music. I didn't want to leave. I'm such a fan for this place, but I cannot tell you why. I never seem to be in the mood for drinking when I'm there. Yet, whenever I'm visiting, I end up here. The beer is large, the place is usually crowded with friendly folk. And if the weather is nice, this is a great place to hang about and people watch. You go to the Ankerklause for the location, not the food. I come here several times a year, as it's a popular meeting place and the location on the canal is hard to beat. They do a breakfast burrito, but it often makes my stomach feel confused a few hours later. Ankerklause does great lunch specials, and the closest thing to fish and chips we've found in Berlin. Drinks are a bit pricy and the latte is the tiniest I've ever seen. Full of noisy and annoying, smug hipsters but let's be honest why wouldn't it be? The patio sits right over the canal, it has a smoking room and a decent bar. What else does a hipster need to feel right at home? A boat-themed bathroom, you say? Sorted. Besides some of the jerkoffs that hang out there, Ankerklause attracts a decent and diverse crowd, and seems to employ only middle-aged gay servers, which is refreshing in Berlin's image-conscious hospitality industry. Service is usually prompt and efficient, can never remember having a FRIENDLY server per se, but hell, we're not there to be buddies and as long as they're not flat-out resentful I'm happy enough to tip 15%. Get there before noon on Tuesdays and Fridays if you want to get a seat as the Turkish market draws in a lot of customers. Also, although the description of the place says they're open from 10 am, they don't open until 4 on Mondays. Be warned. Ankerklause is a solid restaurant and bar and is one of the places I am always up for going to, even if I'm not hungry or thirsty. The ambience is great and so will be anything you order. read more

This place fills a place somewhere between a kneipe and a more fancy bar. I have had a few nice visits, but the place has never really resonated with me. Don't why. I'm clearly in a minority here - the place is insanely popular - but I can't help think there are many nicer bars within spitting distance. Part of it is probably I just don't like the beer on tap, which is something I can't really accept in a bar (especially not a German one). The food is greasy pub fare; the thai veggie curry (which is about all is on offer that I can eat) has always been unavailable on the times I visited over the last year. read more

Vegetarian friendly! A decent bar, but also one of the few decent 'western' breakfasts we've found in Berlin. It seems that finding a nice hearty breakfast here composed of eggs etc is a pretty difficult endeavour in Berlin. Ankerklause is one of the few we've happened to find that served a decent breakfast, and that served this style of breakfast at all! If you're hungry, I recommend trying the 'Mexicanisches' which is a very hearty burrito stuffed with eggs, potatoes, cheese and served with a healthy amount of refried beans, guacamole, salsa and sour cream. There is also a variety of other breakfast items such as simple eggs and toast, french toast etc. Great location right by the canal and a huge patio available in the summer. Gute alte Ankerklause, typischer Kreuzberger Klassiker. Der Salat ist viel zu gut für das RocknRoll Ambiente, dem man nicht zutraut dass sie kochen können. Doch sie können. Man muss nur etwas aufpassen und leider schmecken genau die wirklich bodenständigen Dinge wie Boulette und Würstchen nicht. Leider. Aber Pancakes sind super mit frischen Früchten und den ganzen Tag Sonne auf der grossen Terasse. Kommt beides gratis dazu. Auch das Publikum ist so schön durchmischt, wie die Karte. Nur die ollen Kartoffeltwister gehen überhaupt nicht und der Service sollte sich mal etwas Urlaub gönnen, dann klappts auch mit dem Kopfrechnen und mit dem freundlichen Kaffe hinstellen, aber das ist wohl irgendwie Berlin, also einfach nachrechnen und egal ob der Kaffe nett einfliegt, hauptsache er schmeckt. read more

Equally fantastic on a summer's day or a winter afternoon when the canalside terrace is covered over and drinkers and diners sit with the cafe-provided baby-blue blankets over their laps, this is a cafe that oozes character. There's a great food and fabric market on Maybachufer on Fridays (which had the saddest Hare Krishna in the world chanting at the head of it on my visit) which is worth visiting on your way to or from Ankerklause. Good food and drink, an unbeatable location and a great jukebox. read more
