In terms of music, the bar plays whatever the bartender/anyone-who-stands-behind-the-bar feels like playing, so it can be the weirdest of combinations. I've never seen the bar packed - it's usually filled with just a few people chatting, drinking beers and playing board games. That's right - the bar has a wide assortment of board games you can choose from. My friends and I opted for an unexpectedly exciting round of Jenga, which went on for much longer than expected and attracted the attention of most people at the bar. The bartender was a super relaxed, friendly and welcoming who made us feel right at home. As a bonus, the place has PacMan, Darts and foosball for entertainment.

Took a little bit of time but eventually they seemed to warm to me. One huge biker dude took a shine to me and kept joking with me all night in broken English. The bathrooms were cleaner and nicer than the cobalt/funkys/astoria from my dives back home in Vancouver - seriously Vancouver, get your shit together - LITERALLY. Drink prices seemed super reasonable to me. But really anywhere in Europe they seem reasonable to me. Bartender didn't really know how to make a whiskey sour and what I ended up drinking wasn't that fantastic, but I think that's my fault, what the hell was I doing ordering a whiskey sour at this place? Beer seems to be the best bet. The place filled up quick and seemed very popular with the locals and tourists alike.

Lerchen+Eulen is one of these places. it's been one of my go-to spots in this neighborhood for years and i don't see that changing. Svenja's review is right on: there are plenty of bars like this around Berlin --cozy secondhand furniture jumbled together like a bad Tetris game, warm low lighting, great coffee+alcohol-- but the specific details set it apart. the staff are amazingly friendly (seriously, i wonder where they find these saints!), their cakes are always delicious and the perfect balance to their coffee, and you can get whatever kind of seat your little heart desires: curling-up-with-book benchseats in the big windows, working-with-laptop table seats, barstools for hanging with the bartenders, cuddling-sofas, and outdoor tables in summer for people-watching. it's a great spot for most times: earlier in the day, it's mellower and emptier (and less like a smokehouse), so is nice for working or catching up with friends. the wooden-tiled floors (very cool!) and brick archways, the old jazz and blues on the stereo, the old chairs and wooden tables decorated with fresh flowers and candles in big jars, make the space feel somehow a bit like a country inn during the day, a perfect pause from the bustle of the Markthalle next door. when Lerchen+Eulen fills with people at night, the dense layout and multiple rooms make for a wonderful coziness for huddling together...and Drinking (with a capital 'D'). The bartender wasn't particularly welcoming, when I asked if I could sit at the bar, he pushed the reservation sign at the seat I was pointing at towards me from what I remember... point taken that yes there was a reservation sign but I just wanted to check since I wasn't sure... perhaps I was perceived as rude since I asked in English, or coz I wasn't local and didn't know, or may be that's in keeping with the vibe of the bar, no idea.
