you could easily miss Kindl Stuben if you weren't looking for it. it sits in a row of "daytime" shops (a tailor, travel agent and produce market) on Sonnenalle's fast thoroughfare from Kreuzberg to Neukölln, with an unassuming facade and sign that might belong to an old Wirtshaus or dive bar. this makes 'discovering' the place even more fun: the interior's larger than you'd expect from peering into the two front windows, with two extra rooms ducking off from the high-ceilinged main room and its wraparound bar. the worn wooden floors, simple tables+chairs and distressed walls may be somewhat standard-issue for many bars/cafes in this area of the city, but Kindl Stuben pulls them off with enough unique details to define itself (e.g. large format street-art-style portraits and sketched cityscapes on the walls; chandeliers a bit fancier than their surroundings; fresh flowers and candles on all the tables...).
what's golden here for me is that Kindl Stuben can be my place for any time of day (which at this point i can't say for any other place along this stretch of Sonnenallee). they have breakfast until 16h, with a nice run of mixed plates: a "french breakfast" with croissant+jam+coffee, "big" or "small" breakfasts of mixed cheeses+breads+meats, a vegan breakfast, various scrambled egg plates, then also cereal/muesli and even pancakes. they also have heartier evening fare --Linsentopf, Spaetzle, and veggie or meat versions of Maultaschen and Wuerstchen-- and a full bar. as with too many bars in Berlin, i'm not blown away by the beer selection, but the cozy, friendly vibe of the place makes that easy to overlook. even on weekend nights when they often have great live gigs or DJs (check out the their website for schedule), the space is big enough and with enough chairs that it's never felt TOO crowded to me. there are even some particularly covetable armchairs in the front windows and sofas in the back if you're looking for something a bit cozier. the staff is welcoming and really friendly, although the table service can be a bit spotty (my last time, the waiter and chef blatantly focused on the table of their friends rather than my order, even though i arrived well before they had); however, the atmosphere, great music, and the quality and presentation of the coffee, food and fresh-squeezed juices more than make up for it. read more
