I have a long history with APL, having volunteered there periodically and using their spay/neuter services. They adhere to high standards, keeping their facility clean and employing staff and volunteers who spend time caring for and socializing with the animals. It's a busy place with a lot of animal turnover. I'm trying to adopt a cat from them now, and think it's a great idea that they've provided animals to the Cat's Pyjamas Cat Cafe, which is conveniently located downtown and enables visitors to spend time with cats and kittens outside of their cages, in a more open environment. read more

I recently took in a starved stray and wanted to get him fixed and his vaccines. I called the APL to ask about his weight and health state to be sure he was okay to be neutered and a bit about the recovery. they were very helpful and helped me schedule the appointment. They have very good prices for the services. They only do services on certain days and times but remember that many are volunteers. Its not a vet clinic. Some people seem confused about this. I heard some people complain that they couldnt get checkup vet services. -That's not what the APL is for. They mostly do sheltering, spay and neutering, ,vaccinations, and treating parasites. they also do microchiping for a good price. Recently their buildings were destroyed by a tornado and I hope that they get back up and running soon because they offer a lot of services to the community including catch and release neutering/spaying of feral and community cats. read more

Through fostering for the APL, I've found them to be very compassionate toward the animals and a great community resource.

I chose this rescue organization because I saw a kitten on their website that I fell in love with. They absolutely did not meet my expectations and I warn people to do some research before adopting one of their animals. See pics for additional explanation. read more

I can't say a lot since I've only been there twice, but it's thanks to them that I have this lovely cat in my profile picture! When you first enter there are cages of tiny kittens for you to pet and they are just adorable! It's a pretty big building so I'm guessing that they have a big variety of animals to choose from. Once I picked up my lovely Bo, I was met with many papers to sign but understandable. They need to keep records after all. The carriers and toys are pretty expensive but I'm guessing most of the money goes to the pets, so I bought one myself. There's also a vet there, so if you don't know where to go at least you can consider here. I saw a pregnant dog in the lobby, and I hope she's happy with her puppies right now! read more

We found a pair of kittens in our garage. After a couple days and no sight of mom we took them to the APL. Unfortunately one did not make it but one did. We called almost weekly if not every other week to check on him. After a couple weeks we asked about adoption and where told it would be a few more weeks so we should wait to put in an application. We called the following week and where told to go ahead and fill out the app. So we did. A few days later we got a call saying that he had been placed with a foster and the foster had decided to keep him. Fosters apparently get first choice which would be no big deal except during this whole process nobody told us this was a possibility. Not to mention we have a little bit more of a connection to the kitten then anyone else. We also had been told that if we had put the app in before he went to the foster we would have had first choice but we didn't get that option because we had been told not to put in the app yet. My son has asked constantly about the kitten and we looked forward to telling him that we could bring him home. Now do to a screw up by the APL I don't get to that. read more

My kids and I went in to the APL this weekend to get a dog. We found one we really wanted and were ready to take him home. The APL told me they were not comfortable letting us take a dog home be cause we were going to have him outside during the day while we were at work and school. I told them he would be inside with us in the evenings and at night. they said he could chew his out of my wood 6 foot fence or dig his way out and not have access to any shelter. I have a nice back yard that is fenced in and yes it is wood, but most fences around are. I have two big trees in my backyard, I have two dog houses and the dog would have plenty of water and food. why is it that the APL thinks that a dogs natural habitat would be bad for a dog. I would think that leaving a dog cooped up inside for 7 or 8 hours a day would be very unhealthy for a dog and boring. when animals are bored they chew stuff and the only thing would be my furniture, It would not be able to run and play or get any kind of exercise if trapped inside all day I would like to know how they know what my animals have access to when no one from this place has ever been to my home. I have had animals my whole life and have never heard of animals not being able to be outside. I have never had any complaints on my animals or have never had any taken from me. I thought the APL wanted the dogs that they get in there to have good homes. Large dogs do not belong inside 24 hrs a day, why does this APL think dogs can't be outside in there natural habitat. My kids want a dog but all the APL was able to do was try to dicatate how aninmals don't belong outside. All they ended up doing was not saving a dog and hurting my kids feeling. What a disappointment the APL turned out to be. I guess saving a l ife isn't as important as they want everyone to think. read more
