I had a very troubling experience with Dr. Gwendolyn Steffen and her clinic, and I want to share my…read morestory to help others make an informed decision. This was my first experience with a veterinarian, as Reese is my first dog, and it has been nothing short of disappointing. The issues began on around October 2023, when I arrived to drop off a fecal matter sample for Reese at the time Dr. Steffen had instructed. Despite it being business hours, she wasn't there. Just as I was leaving - she arrived, she made an offhand comment, "Of course, someone showed up as soon as I left." After a lengthy conversation about music, she mentioned that the computer system was down and told me not to worry about the fees. However, when I tried to schedule another appointment later, I was informed that I had an outstanding balance with late fees and interest, which I had never been told about. Despite updating my address multiple times, I never received a bill. Things took a turn for the worse during my visit on October 23, 2024. I brought Reese in for a sick exam, and Dr. Steffen recommended sedating her, which I agreed to. The appointment was at 11:15 AM, but Reese wasn't seen until just before 1:00 PM, leaving me waiting for over two hours without any updates. After the sedation, I was hit with a significant bill for services I never authorized, including laser and ozone treatments. When I voiced my concerns, Dr. Steffen was dismissive. It was especially alarming to see Reese leave the clinic in worse condition than when we arrived--she was walking on her back legs in a strange manner and had her tail tucked between her legs. The billing issues were compounded by Dr. Steffen's refusal to correct inaccuracies in Reese's medical records. She falsely documented that I had requested pain management for Reese, which I never did, and added condescending comments about me being a "financial loss" to the clinic, even suggesting I was seeking free services. This was simply untrue, as I have always paid for any services rendered. When I asked for these inaccuracies to be corrected, she refused. Throughout my time dealing with this clinic, I also experienced multiple instances of microaggressions and blatant racism. The most egregious was when Dr. Steffen asked me if I had been assaulted in the face because of the size of my lips--a deeply inappropriate and offensive comment. Additionally, when she prescribed pain medication for Reese, she repeatedly emphasized that it was "canine pain medicine." I don't understand why this would even need to be clarified at a vet's office; it felt like another condescending assumption about my knowledge. Additionally, Dr. Steffen frequently brought up her Black boyfriend in conversations, which came across as performative rather than relevant to Reese's care. On top of these concerns, I overheard staff talking negatively about Reese when they thought I couldn't hear. It contributed to an overall atmosphere of unprofessionalism and disrespect. Dr. Steffen would often mention that all of my calls were recorded whenever an issue arose, but when there was a dispute about something she said, she never referenced these recordings when it turned out she was incorrect. To address these issues formally, I have submitted a complaint to the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board. I strongly urge anyone considering this clinic to read all the one-star reviews on Google carefully--they are consistent with my experience and paint a concerning picture. This clinic's practices fall far short of the standard of care that pet owners deserve. I hope sharing my experience helps others avoid the same issues I encountered.

I began searching the area an calling around as our normal vet office couldn't get us in for days. Monroe Family Pet Hospital was able to get us in same day. The process was pretty simple. Walk in, check in and wait to be called in. Very friendly environment and not at all stressful for the four legged one. The staff could not have been sweeter or easy to work with. We went in, talked about what happened and some of the symptoms that we'd noticed. They put our dog on a few medications and we were on our way. After the visit, they even called to follow up and see how she was coming and long and suggested a follow up visit if we needed anything. Everything worked out so we didn't go in for the follow up visit. Would I go back? I would, actually. We had a unique situation where our neighbor was one of the lead veterinarian's at our primary vet office. This made things a little more easy and convenient. This vet insisted on all treatment being conducted without me being in the room. My cat was very anxious and it was odd that I wasnt allowed to be with him while he was being treated. They started selling me on a "credit card application" to treat my dying cat with outrageous cost for the treatment plan. The dr then alluded to not "releasing my cat" back to me because he was in such bad condition but took the time to try to sell me a credit card plan for payment to her. After she could not convince me she sent her vet tech to try to sell me a different payment plan. All the while my cat is in a seperate room dying without me with him. I demanded my cat to given back to me and went directly to his regular vet, 30 minutes away. I was informed the cat was dying and the only humane thing to do was to euthanize. I was also told there was no treatment plan that would have made a difference. The cat was a Persian that was 15 years old at the end of his natural life span. His regular vet told me she did a scan of his chest and his lungs were filling up with liquids and the first vet could have done nothing to prolong his life. The first vet did not nothing but prolong the pain and discomfort he was in. Do not go to this vet. The parking lot is empty at all times for a reason. The dr is so desperate she has total care and concern for animals. Its all about the money and saving this practice at this point.

That vet was so flipping expensive though (and kept over-treating my animals) that I needed to take a mortgage out just to take my animals in there. Bellevue has been an entirely different experience. I initially brought my little puppy in because the prior vet gave him too many vaccine shots at once causing a major allergic reaction (and he didn't really seem to care when I called him in a panic). When I called Bellevue, they gave me great advice on how to stop the reaction and then quickly fit me in for treatment. They are very affordable, and I never feel like they are trying to over-medicate my pets or to nickel and dime me. They also added a female veterinarian recently who I really like. The receptionist was really nice as was the vet tech who got my info. Dr.legoretta took x-rays. Now all I had was 300 dollars. I explained that I thought buddy had pnumonia and had spread it to my other 6 cats. He proceeded to tell me that buddy had a possible blockage and gas in his stomach which was causing his organs to shift up causing the labored breathing. He did give him a b12 injection and a steroid.told me he didn't think it was viral or bacterial so he wasn't going to prescribe any antibiotics. I asked well how come it has spread to my other cats if it's not viral or bacterial. He response and I quote was maybe all your cats ate the same thing and they are blocked. I mean are u serious? So I came home mad and upset. I used to be an rvt. So I got some aqua mox which is amoxicillian for fish aquariums. A friend sent me some albuterol and I have some homeopathic nose relief for cats.ive been dosing since Thursday and doing breathing treatments on buddy 3 to 4 times a day with a humidifier in my bathroom. The symptoms on all cats are going away. They are not labored breathing or congested. They still need to be treated for another week but are much better. Ohh and the gas that he said was in their stomach causing their organs to push up and couldn't breath was actually air because they were mouth breathing. I paid 250 dollars and he could have killed all my cats if I hadn't trusted my own gut as an ex registered vet tech. And he took 2x-rays.a lateral view and a verticle view. The vertical view looked fine but his lungs looked a little cloudy in the lateral view. He told me it was air. No it was infection from the pnumonia. I'm writing this review because this vet could have killed my cat. You mean to tell me you see a cat with labored open mouth breathing, goopy eyes and nose and congestion, sneezing and coughing so hard he would scream and your diagnosis is a possible blockage and his organs being pushed up from gas in his stomach. This was pnumonia not your bs diagnosis. So if you want a dead animal go to this vet. But I will never ever go back there ever again. And if I were you I wouldn't either.
